The 2014 Donington Test was the first official, public, test for the 2014/15 Formula E Season, held between the 3rd of July and the 19th of August 2014. Sébastien Buemi set the fastest time of the test on the penultimate day of five days of testing, held at Donington Park in the United Kingdom over the summer of 2014.
All ten teams with various drivers attended the test, which also included a closed circuit ePrix length just before the final day.[1] The test allowed the teams to get familiar with the Spark-Renault SRT_01E, rather than test innovative features as planned from 2015/16 onward.
Background[]
Before the first Donington Test, the FIA and Formula E Holdings announced that Donington Park would be the home for the new FIA Formula E Championship, with an official shakedown taking place in June 2014.[2] The Spark-Renault SRT_01E had already completed over 4,000km of development testing before the Donington Test, which allowed teams to set to work on simply maximising the pace and potential performance of the car.
Day One[]
The first day of the 2014 Donington Test was scheduled to be on the 3rd of July, 2014, with entry free to the general public.[3] The first day also witnessed the conclusion of a deal between Rimac Automobili and Formula E, to be announced on day two.[4] The agreement saw that Rimac would supply one of their Concept One supercars to the championship for promotional work, such as passenger runs and as the Race Director's inspection vehicle.[4]
Report[]
The test was split into two sessions, one in the morning and one in the afternoon, on a sunny July day in Leicestershire, England. It was in the afternoon, with little more than an hour of running left, that Sébastien Buemi set the fastest time, completing the GP layout in a time of 1:35.475.[3] The Swiss driver also came top in the distance standings, completing 36 laps, three more than the next highest total of Jérôme d'Ambrosio.[3]
Also impressing, despite the gap in times, was Lucas di Grassi, who missed half of the day's running, but still completed 29 laps.[3] Daniel Abt was sharing the car with di Grassi in the morning, with the German driver having to leave with GP2 duties to attend to.[3] Abt had started the day strongly, setting the fastest time in the morning, but tumbled down the order during the warmer afternoon session.[3] Stéphane Sarrazin also showed promise, setting the fifth fastest time despite it being his debut (having missed the Shakedown in June).[3]
Further back, Gil de Ferran made his first appearance in the Spark-Renault SRT_01E, sharing the second Andretti Autosport car with Scott Speed, although neither set particularly stunning times.[3] Rounding off the session standings was Michela Cerruti, who failed to set a time for reasons unknown.[3]

Day Two[]
The second day of the 2014 Donington Test was held on the 4th of July 2014, but only saw 19 drivers take part.[7] Absent from the test was Daniel Abt, who was away on GP2 duties, with Audi Sport ABT opting not to fill his seat.[7]
Report[]
Most drivers found over four seconds in pace on the second day, with Lucas di Grassi topping the tables with a 1:31.973 lap.[7] His time was set in the afternoon, beating day one pace setter, Sébastien Buemi by just over a tenth of a second.[7] Buemi also lost his leading distance tally, after Sam Bird in the number two Virgin completed 56 laps over the day, equating to over 225km in distance (over 2 times the distance of an ePrix.[7]
The main factor for the major jump in performance, however, was the removal of the temporary chicane at the exit of the old hairpin.[7] Jérôme d'Ambrosio had set the pace early on, before the chicane was removed (his time almost half a second quicker than Buemi's day one time), with significantly faster times in the afternoon.[7] Many drivers had made contact with the barrier, with the FIA opting to remove it rather than continue to reposition it.[7]
Oriol Servià shared the day with Mike Conway at Dragon Racing, with the former making his bow in the SRT_01E.[7] Also joining the paddock was 2013 GP2 Series champion Fabio Leimer, who stepped into António Félix da Costa's car for the day at Amlin Aguri.[7] Leimer finished the day in twelfth, while Servia's running earned him eighteenth.[7]

Day Three[]
After a one week break to repair and evaluate parts from the previous two days, the field reconvened at Donington Park on the ninth of July.[10] The day also saw the Development Car in action, with Juan Manuel López at the wheel, completing fifteen laps in total.[10]
Report[]
Back at the summit was Sébastien Buemi, who set the fastest time of the test to that point, beating Lucas di Grassi's day two time by 0.061s.[10] Di Grassi had set the pace in the morning session, although battery management and race simulation runs in the afternoon saw both Buemi and Jérôme d'Ambrosio (testing for China Racing) beat his time.[10] Stéphane Sarrazin and Jaime Alguersuari also ensured that there were five different teams represented in the top five in testing.[10]
In the mid-pack, Michela Cerruti enjoyed a promising day, completing 22 laps and setting the thirteenth fastest time of the day, although she remained a second off of team mate Jarno Trulli's pace.[10] Dragon Racing were hampered with issues, meaning that Mike Conway and Oriol Servià were again forced to share the car, with China Racing and Venturi similarly hampered.[10] Indeed, Nick Heidfeld missed out on running entirely on the day.[10]

Day Four[]
The 10th of July saw the fourth day of the 2014 Donington Test, which also served as the penultimate day of testing before the start of the 2014/15 Formula E Championship.[13] China Racing were able to run two sets of cars for the first time in testing, with Juan Manuel López taking over the second pair.[13]
Report[]
Sébastien Buemi set another fastest lap of the Test to take his third session honours, once again beating Lucas di Grassi.[13] Buemi missed out on becoming the first man to set a time under 1:31.000 by just 0.083s, with di Grassi the only man within half a second of the Swiss.[13] Jérôme d'Ambrosio, Scott Speed and Sam Bird also managed to get times under the 1:32.000 mark, the latter two achieving the feat for the first time in testing.[13]
Elsewhere, Nick Heidfeld took over the Venturi cars for the day, setting a top-ten time and completing a test high 78 laps (well over 300km in distance).[13] With no major issues through the field, Day Four of the test proved to be the most significant, with 840 laps (3,376km) covered in just a single day.[13] Despite this, Dragon Racing continued to see Oriol Servià and Mike Conway share their cars.[13]
Franck Montagny had led the way with the fastest time of the morning, but slipped to eleventh in the afternoon despite finding four tenths of a second.[13] Jarno Trulli had a brief scare after bouncing towards that barriers via a gravel trap, but escaped with no damage.[13] Lopez, meanwhile, completed 46 laps for China Racing in their second pair, setting the fifteenth fastest time of the day.[13]

Day Five[]
The final day of the 2014 Donington Test was held on the nineteenth of August, after a month break, which included a 'behind-closed-doors' race simulation on the 11 August.[16][1] Heinz-Harald Frentzen was given the chance to drive the 'Development Car', while the BMW Qualcomm i8 and BMW Qualcomm i3 support vehicles were tested with their 'wireless recharging' equipment.[16]
Report[]
In front of over 5,000 fans, Sébastien Buemi set the fastest time of the session, meaning he was fastest on four of the five days of the test, and, arguably, started the season as favourite.[16]With all teams running their four Spark-Renault SRT_01Es throughout the day, all of the drivers covered significant mileage during the day.[16] Topping the distance charts were Antonio Garcia and Ho-Pin Tung, whom looped the Donington Park circuit 79 times in their shared #88 China Racing machines.[16]
There was further good news at e.dams-Renault, as Nicolas Prost claimed second behind team mate Buemi, leaving many to speculate that the two would be fighting for the title.[16] Lucas di Grassi also left Donington among the favourites, although a disappointing final day left him down in sixth.[16] Charles Pic made his Formula E bow with Andretti Autosport, signing up to drive in Beijing alongside Franck Montagny (who ended the final test in third), with Tung another to get his first taste of the Spark-Renault before the start of the season.[16]
The final day saw 1,222 laps completed in total by the field of drivers, equating to almost 5,000km (3,100mi) in distance.[16]
