The 2014 Punta del Este Test was the single in-season event for the 2014/15 FIA Formula E Championsip, held in Punta del Este on the 14th of December 2014.[1] Held on the day after the 2014 Punta del Este ePrix, Stéphane Sarrazin set the fastest time of the one day test, completing the circuit in 1:14.946s, a little over a tenth quicker than Sébastien Buemi, who had won the previous day.[1]

Background[]

The Punta del Este test was held on the Sunday after the 2014 Punta del Este ePrix, which was won by Sébastien Buemi.[1] The test itself was the first time that the cars had run, competitively, since the Donington Test's final day in August, with Spark not completing any private tests with the development cars since.[1] The test allowed teams and drivers to evaluate their race simulation and battery maintenance, and allowed those that retired in the race on Saturday (notably Sam Bird and António Félix da Costa) a chance to recover some lost mileage.[1]

China Racing also handed a test drive to Argentine racer Esteban Guerrieri, who would share the second set of cars with Antonio Garcia.[1] Guerrieri joined Salvador Duran, Jean-Éric Vergne and Garcia on the list of drivers making their Formula E début in Uruguay.

Day One[]

The test's only day of running was split into two sessions, one four hour session run in the morning, followed by a second session of similar length in the afternoon.[1] The circuit was unmodified from the day before, while the weather remained bright, warm and dry.[1]

Report[]

After beating his pole position time by half a second in the opening half hour of the session, Jean-Eric Vergne was forced to sit out the afternoon session due to unspecified reasons.[1] In a test that was dedicated to race setup and pace, Vergne's time looked as if it would remain unbeaten, until a late flurry in the waning minutes of the session saw his time beaten by four of his rivals.[1] Race winner Buemi and podium sitter Nelson Piquet, Jr. were first to topple the Frenchman's time, before a stunning lap by his compatriot topped the tables.[1]

Stéphane Sarrazin it was that set the time, beating Buemi's time by 0.157s and topping a session for the first time for Venturi.[1] Sarrazin was also well placed in the distance charts, completing 82 laps, with team mate Nick Heidfeld completing 57 (and finishing fourth on the day).[1] Jarno Trulli was the man on a mission, however, touring the Punta del Este circuit an unmatched 85 times on the day. He, and team mate Michela Cerruti, managed 156 laps between them, 17 more than the Venturi duo.

Of the stragglers and new faces from the previous day, Bird and da Costa managed to get into the top ten, with 62 and 60 laps respectively.[1] Garcia completed 68 laps for China Racing, ending the day in eleventh, with stable mate Guerrieri only managing five laps at the end of the day, finishing 21st and last.[1] Duran covered a lot of mileage with 68 laps completed, although was down on the one-lap pace, finishing 20th.[1]

In total, 1086 laps were completed over the test day, resulting in a combined distance of 3040km (c. 1890mi).[1]
