The 2016 Moscow ePrix was set to be the ninth round of the 2015/16 FIA Formula E Championship, staged on the 4th of June 2016.[1] Moscow was a returning host city from the 2014/15 Championship, with the ePrix originally set to use the same circuit until the race had to be cancelled due to a failure to negotiate road closures for the race[2] leaving the 2015 Moscow ePrix as the only FE race to ever be held in the country.

Background[]

An unmodified Moscow ePrix circuit was expected to return for the city's second chance at hosting Formula E, again under the shadow of the Kremlin.[1]

Cancellation[]

As early as February the Formula E paddock was rife with rumours that the Moscow ePrix was on the verge of being lost, as Formula E officials tried to negotiate with Moscow officials to close roads around the city.[3] These difficulties were surprising, given that the 2015 race had been added to the calendar late, and had been popular with locals, drivers and fans alike.[3] Yet, a deal could not be reached in time for the circuit to be established, meaning that the 2016 Moscow ePrix had to be cancelled on the 6th of May 2016, a little less than a month before the race.[2]

Alejandro Agag led negotiations with other cities to arrange an alternative venue for the ninth race of 2015/16, with Monaco emerging as the favourite to take over the role.[2] Unfortunately the Monte Carlo circuit would not have been able to be set up in time for the 4th of June date, meaning that the calendar would be reduced to ten rounds in its second season.[2]
