The 2018 Marrakech E-Prix, officially known as the 2018 ABB FIA Formula E Marrakech E-Prix, was the third round of the 2017/18 ABB FIA Formula E Championship, staged at the Circuit Moulay El Hassan in Marrakech, Morocco, on 13 January 2018. The race was the first E-Prix held in 2018, second to be held in Marrakech, and would be followed by the first ever Rookie Test for Formula E.
Qualifying had seen Sébastien Buemi rediscover his form from the start of season two, the Swiss racer claiming pole after an excellent run in Super Pole. Sam Bird would start from second ahead of Felix Rosenqvist, while the returning José María López beat Lucas di Grassi to fifth.
The start of the race would be rather tame with an even getaway throughout the field, although di Grassi almost made a move stick on López through turn one. The rest of the field made it through the first corner with nothing of note other than the usual rubbing, leaving Buemi in the lead from Bird and Rosenqvist.
The first drama of the race would come at the start of the second lap, as an ill-timed move from Daniel Abt sent Alex Lynn spinning onto the run-off at turn one. Lynn rejoined at the back as Abt was slapped with a drive through penalty, with the German serving his sentence a few laps later to drop behind the Brit. Another incident early on saw André Lotterer spin Nicolas Prost around at turn seven.
Out front, meanwhile, Buemi, Bird and Rosenqvist were pulling clear of the fight for fourth, which saw López drop behind di Grassi, Nelson Piquet Jr. and Mitch Evans. The Argentine fought back and duly re-passed the Kiwi, but as the pit window approached all four began to drop away from the leaders.
The pit-window itself would create some dramatic changes to the order, for Evans, António Félix da Costa and Luca Filippi all stopped a lap early. This dropped all of them out of contention, as a Full Course Yellow was thrown to recover Lotterer's abandoned car at turn nine. The German's Techeetah had suffered a re-gen problem under breaking for the hairpin, and was unable to get going again and so was stranded on the exit.
Renault e.Dams would get Buemi out before anyone else during the stops, gifting the Swiss racer a two second advantage over his rivals. His main challenger was now Rosenqvist, who had been gifted second as a minor glitch before the stops caused Bird to lose power down the start/finish straight.
The rest of the race would be about Rosenqvist hunting down Buemi, with the Swede chipping into the Swiss racer's lead with every lap. As contact further down saw Heidfeld, Mortara and Engel all pick up damage after a misjudged move by the two Venturis, Rosenqvist caught and passed Buemi with five laps to go, a simple dive on the brakes into turn seven getting the job done.
With that the race was run, with Rosenqvist pulling clear over the final laps to claim a clear victory from Buemi. Bird cruised home third but was given a late scare by fastest lap setter Nelson Piquet Jr., while Jean-Éric Vergne benefited from the FCY to move up to fifth after his poor quali-performance. López, Heidfeld, Tom Blomqvist, Lynn and Abt would complete the scorers.
The Marrakech E-Prix was set to arrive after an appeal by the Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler team, who opted to appeal against Daniel Abt's exclusion from the results of the 2017 Hong Kong E-Prix II. The German had taken victory as the chequered flag fell on the Hong Kong double header, only to be told that one of his cars had failed post-race scrutineering due to a motor identification mismatch. Team Principle Allan McNish declared in the hours after the disqualification that Audi intended to appeal the decision, although the team later withdrew their appeal after reviewing their own documents.
A Punta Promotion
One major change ahead of the Marrakech E-Prix would be a revision to the schedule, with the return of the Punta del Este E-Prix in mid-March, after the organisers of the proposed São Paulo E-Prix requested an additional year to prepare. Issues over the ownership of the area of São Paulo where the race was set to take place came to the fore in the final months of 2017, prompting the FIA to seek an alternative venue. Fortunately, ex-FE hosts Punta del Este in Uruguay were keen to see the series make a return to the Playa Brava Beach, and were duly revealed as the hosts of the sixth round of the season at the WMSC Meeting on the 6th December 2017.
Elsewhere, there was a significant revision to the sporting regulations in Marrakech, with the FIA deciding to drop the Minimum Pitstop Time rule with immediate effect. The rule, which had been used since the inaugural FE season, was designed to ensure that a driver had their belts properly done up after the mid-race car swap, although after three seasons most teams were able to get the job done well before the minimum time. As such the FIA opted to drop the rule for the rest of the fourth season, although several drivers such as Sam Bird questioned the move on safety grounds. However, after an appeal by the teams the FIA reinstated the minimum stop time for the Marrakech E-Prix, as teams wanted more time to adjust to the change in regulations.
In terms of the entry list the major news would come from Dragon Racing, who allowed second driver Neel Jani to leave the team after their miserable start to the season in Hong Kong. This separation was partially the result of the failed integration of Porsche engineers within the American effort, leaving the future of Dragon and Penske beyond the end of the season in doubt. However, a week before the E-Prix, Dragon revealed that ex-DS Virgin Racing driver José María López would race for them for the rest of the season, igniting speculation that DS would join the American effort at the end of the season.
Of Titles and Testing
The post-race fiasco surrounding Abt in Hong Kong meant that Sam Bird would head to Marrakech in the lead of the Formula E Championship, two points ahead of Jean-Éric Vergne. Felix Rosenqvist's inherited victory, combined with fastest lap and pole, left him in third, while Edoardo Mortara was fourth after his debut. Fifteen drivers had registered points at the opening round, with defending Champion Lucas di Grassi among the quintet yet to score.
Mahindra Racing had moved ahead of DS Virgin Racing in the Teams' Championship, once again thanking Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler for dropping the technical ball. The German outfit found themselves down in sixth, behind Techeetah, Venturi and Jaguar Racing, but ahead of three time Champions Renault e.Dams. The French squad endured their worst FE weekend ever to find themselves down in ninth, only ahead of Dragon Racing who had remained pointless.
On 9 November 2017 it was revealed that Marrakech would host the first ever Rookie Test for Formula E, set to be held on the 14th January. Furthermore, on the eve of the Marrakech E-Prix Formula E Holdings revealed that Swiss technology firm ABB had signed a multi-season deal to become the Series' title sponsor. The Swiss tech firm, founded in 1988 upon the merger of two international European companies, signed a deal though to be worth £15 million a season to be the Series' biggest sponsor for at least two years, with all non-directly sponsored E-Prix carrying the ABB name.

The standard qualifying format would be followed in Marrakech, with the twenty drivers split into four groups of five based on Championship position. Each group would have a six minute period on circuit to set a single full power effort, before the top five drivers overall proceeded to the Super Pole shootout. The shootout would then see each driver get a single shot at setting a flying lap on a completely empty circuit, with the fastest in Super Pole ultimately starting from pole position.
Group one would see the bottom five in the Championship take to the circuit, headlined by defending Champion Lucas di Grassi, who had suffered a poor weekend in Hong Kong. The Brazilian would be joined by FE rookie Tom Blomqvist, replacing Kamui Kobayashi at Andretti, and José María López who rejoined the Series with Dragon. Completing the quintet would be Lopez's new teammate Jérôme d'Ambrosio and FE rookie André Lotterer in the Techeetah.
Lotterer was the first man to hit the circuit amid the haze, although as the German opened his 180 kw/h lap there would be no concerns about visibility. His full power effort would be instantly beaten, however, by the debuting Blomqvist despite the Brit's brush with the barriers at turn eight, before di Grassi went to the top with a 1:20.314. López almost managed to topple the Brazilian, just falling shy by a tenth, while d'Ambrosio slotted in between Blomqvist and Lotterer.
Renault e.Dams were the main act in the second quintet, with both Sébastien Buemi and Nicolas Prost in action for the triple Teams' Champions. They would be joined by Alex Lynn in the #36 DS Virgin, while Maro Engel would compete for Venturi. FE rookie Luca Filippi would complete the quintet in the inconsistent NIO.
Unlike the first group of the day, the second group all left the pits at the same time, with the two Renault's bookending the quintet. Given the relative proximity there would be several nearmisses, particularly between Buemi and Lynn, although that would not put Buemi off from setting a 1:20.491, putting him into third overall. Lynn was also looking strong, a tenth behind the Swiss racer, while Prost and Engel failed to beat Blomqvist's time, and ended the session behind Filippi.
The third quintet would see historically strong qualifiers Jean-Éric Vergne and Felix Rosenqvist go to battle, both having a pole position apiece in Hong Kong. Also in action would be Championship leader Sam Bird, another strong qualifier, as well as the impressive rookie Edoardo Mortara. Completing the quintet would be Nick Heidfeld in the second Mahindra, who had historically been beaten by teammate Rosenqvist.
There was to be another different approach to qualifying among the third group, with Rosenqvist heading out early to set a clean time. The rest filtered onto the circuit over the next couple of minutes, as Rosenqvist shot to the top of the times in spite of a poor opening sector. Bird, managed to slot himself into fifth overall, while . Mortara, meanwhile, was forced to abandon his quick lap after a technical fault, leaving him at the back of the grid, while Heidfeld smacked the barriers at turn eleven after misjudging his breaking point. The German's crash brought out the red flag, but everyone else had fortunately managed to set their full power effort.
The final group of the afternoon would see the drivers in sixth through to tenth in the standings hit the circuit for the first time, headlined by season one Champion Nelson Piquet Jr. in the second of the Jaguar. Elsewhere, di Grassi's teammate Daniel Abt would be in action, as would Piquet's teammate Mitch Evans. Completing the final five would be António Félix da Costa and Oliver Turvey for Andretti and NIO respectively.
Heidfeld's accident delayed the start of the group's period, which would be further shortened by an accident for da Costa when the Portuguese suffered a lock-up and hit the barriers on the exit of turn seven. His accident meant that none of the competitors bar Evans set a time, although the FIA decided to allow Piquet, Abt and Turvey to go out again and set a single full power effort. Ultimately, all would fall shy of Super Pole, Piquet the best placed overall in seventh ahead of Abt and Evans, with Turvey slotting into tenth.
Bird hit the circuit first in Super Pole having qualified fifth overall, with a clean effort of 1:20.615 standing him in good stead. However, Buemi would go even better as the next man out on circuit, beating the Brit in every sector to record a 1:20.355 and besting his effort from the Group stage. That left the Swiss racer as favourite to take pole, although there were still three drivers to run.
Next out was the surprise contender in the top five, with Dragon Racing's López taking to the circuit on full attack, although his method left him a second off Buemi's effort. di Grassi went next but made a mess of his middle sector, ending up behind López in fourth, having been ahead of Buemi after the first part of the lap. Finally came 2016 pole sitter Rosenqvist, although unable to better either Buemi or Bird at the top of the standings, ruing a poor end to the first sector after running wide on the exit of turn five.

It was a cool afternoon in Marrakech ahead of the E-Prix, with clear skies and track temperatures hovering at 14°C, just below the air temperature. As such, there would be no concerns about cooling, particularly around the battery, allowing the drivers to push their cars far harder than usual and still conserve energy. Regardless, pole sitter Sébastien Buemi would lead the field onto the grid without issue, with everyone bar Oliver Turvey and Jérôme d'Ambrosio starting in their grid slots.
Buemi would streak away from pole to claim an early lead from Sam Bird, while Felix Rosenqvist just fell shy of challenging the Brit through the first corner. The rest of the field made it through behind them without issue, although there were several lock-ups into the first few corners. Later around the lap, Daniel Abt, Nelson Piquet Jr., Mitch Evans and António Félix da Costa going four wide into turn four, but all made it through.
Out front, meanwhile, Bird would try hard to get ahead of Buemi, but the Swiss racer held him off to lead across the line. Rosenqvist, meanwhile, would slip back into the sights of José María López, with Lucas di Grassi harassing the Dragon at the end of the opening tour. Behind should have been Alex Lynn, but he paid the price for squeezing Abt into the inside wall at turn one, resulting in the Brit being spat out onto the run-off.
The race quickly calmed down in the early stages, with Buemi and Bird inching clear of Rosenqvist, whom had the rest of the top ten queued up behind him. López, meanwhile, would begin a slow descent through the field, with di Grassi the first driver to lunge past him with an ambitious dive into turn five. That move allowed Piquet to attack the Dragon into turn ten, with the Brazilian elbowing his way through for fifth at the apex.
Abt would use Piquet's move to also barge past López, while Jean-Éric Vergne found himself stuck behind Evans as he attacked the Argentine. Elsewhere, Nicolas Prost's miserable season continued when André Lotterer put him into a spin, dumping the Frenchman down to the back of the field. Lynn, meanwhile, was back underway having been spun out of contention by Abt early on, while pitlane starter Turvey was up in the top fifteen. d'Ambrosio, meanwhile, was struggling around well off the back of the pack.
The following laps would see the top six move back together, with Rosenqvist, di Grassi, Piquet and Abt all getting onto the back of Buemi and Bird ahead. However, that group would soon be broken up, with Piquet throwing a lunge at di Grassi into turn five on lap seven, only for the defending Champion to defend heavily to the inside. Yet, while di Grassi successfully defended the position, a failure on the exit of the corner saw the Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler roll to a stop, with di Grassi frantically trying to get the car restarted.
di Grassi's demise allowed the top three to sprint clear of Piquet and Abt, with no safety car or FCY required to recover his car as di Grassi limped back to the pits. Abt, meanwhile, would successfully dive past Piquet into turn one at the start of lap nine, moments before being slapped with a drive through penalty for spinning Lynn out of contention. Behind, López was handing onto the back of Evans, and keeping Vergne at bay, while Nick Heidfeld was steadily slipping down the field, even surviving a tap from da Costa into turn four.
Abt served his penalty on lap eleven, dumping him back down to fifteenth just behind Lynn, only to be gifted two positions almost instantly as Edoardo Mortara barged Luca Filippi wide through turn ten. Further aiding the German's recovery was the fact that Tom Blomqvist was struggling to keep the pace in eleventh, with the Anglo-Swede leading a bunch of cars covering twelfth to eighteenth. Ultimately, Blomqvist's resistance would fade as the pitstops loomed, with Heidfeld, Lotterer, Abt, Mortara and Lynn all barging past in the space of a lap.
Indeed, it was in that pack where most of the entertainment would be found before the pitstops, with Mortara scything inside Lynn at turn one moments before he lunged past Blomqvist's Andretti. Abt, meanwhile, would run right around the outside of Lotterer through the same corner, with the German then suffering a huge lock-up at turn seven, the result of a system failure. Indeed, the action in that battle pack meant that everyone missed Rosenqvist's move on Bird, with replays showing that the DS Virgin had suddenly lost power on the start/finish straight a couple of laps before the pit window opened.
Lotterer's stranded car would see an FCY called, just after Evans, da Costa, Abt and d'Ambrosio had completed their stops and rejoined. It was, however, perfectly timed for Buemi and co. at the head of the field, whom all dived into the pits on lap seventeen. The majority all managed to complete their stops before the FCY was withdrawn, although Turvey, Blomqvist, Lynn and Prost were all still in the pits when the race resumed, prompting some complaints to the officials.
The stops did have an affect on the order, with Piquet jumping López, while Rosenqvist dropped back towards Bird, whose first car had had a partial deployment failure towards the end of the stint. Yet, Rosenqvist was quick to get back onto Buemi's tail, while Bird tried hard to go with him, only to find that he needed to conserve more energy than his rivals. He did, at least, keep going on track, unlike Turvey whose second car never left the pitlane.
Vergne would break into the top five soon after the stops, lunging past López into turn one before blasting off to catch Piquet, whom had broken clear of the Dragon. Rosneqvist, meanwhile, would continue to chip away at Buemi's lead, getting within striking distance with ten laps to go. Yet, Buemi would not let the Swede get closer than half a second to the back of his car, and duly recorded a couple of quick laps to move almost a second clear.
At the back, meanwhile, Prost sent his Renault e.Dams darting inside Lynn at turn three, a move that put the Frenchman up into eleventh, a few seconds behind Blomqvist, whom had benefited hugely during the stops. Ahead of him ran Mortara and Heidfeld, with those two holding a fair amount of energy in reserve than those ahead of them. Indeed, both soon found themselves stuck behind Engel, who was himself caught behind López in the Dragon with five laps still to run. Abt, meanwhile, would use FanBoost to jump ahead of Evans for thirteenth into turn seven, the Kiwi having lost out massively during the pitstops.
Back with the leaders and Rosenqvist got a good run on Buemi out of the turn four/five/six chicane, giving him a shot of diving inside the Swiss racer at turn seven. A weave one-way and then the other duly saw Rosenqvist dart inside the e.Dams into the left hander, with Buemi unable to cut back inside the Mahindra due to the narrow exit. Rosenqvist then managed to pull out a small lead before the end of the lap, denying Buemi and immediate response.
Into the closing stages and the Engel-Mortara-Heidfeld fight had got physical, Heidfeld managing to get ahead of Engel with a lunge into turn one with four laps to go. Mortara then tried to lunge inside Engel into turn ten, only to lock his rear wheels and smack into the inside wall, and then bounce into his teammate. Engel then bounced into the side of Heidfeld which spun his compatriot around, and broke his front wing, although neither he, nor Engel, would lose a position. Mortara, meanwhile, was left with rear suspension damage that forced him to retire a few moments later.
With that the race was run, with Rosenqvist cruising home a second clear of Buemi, while Bird claimed third after fending off a late challenge from Piquet as the Brazilian set fastest lap. Vergne ended the day in fifth ahead of López, while both Engel and Heidfeld made it to the chequered flag despite Mortara's efforts to remove them both in the closing stages. Blomqvist was next ahead of Prost, while Lynn and Abt fell just shy of the points after their collision in the opening stages.
After the race it both Engel and Prost were slapped with twenty second time penalties for running out of energy before crossing the finish line, reshaping the bottom end of the top ten. They were both ejected from the points, promoting Heidfeld into seventh, Blomqvist eighth, and Lynn and Abt into ninth and tenth respectively. Engel, meanwhile, would be re-classified in twelfth, behind Evans, with Prost just ahead of da Costa in thirteenth.

Felix Rosenqvist moved to the top of the standings in Marrakech after his second successive victory, the Swede now four points ahead of ex-leader Sam Bird. Jean-Éric Vergne dropped to second, seven points further back, while Nelson Piquet Jr. moved into the top four ahead of Edoardo Mortara. Sébastien Buemi, however, would be the biggest mover, shooting into sixth from fourteenth, with Nick Heidfeld, Mitch Evans, Daniel Abt and António Félix da Costa completing the top ten.
Mahindra Racing were able to extend their lead atop the Teams' Championship after Rosenqvist's victory, the Indian based effort holding an eighteen point lead over DS Virgin Racing. Techeetah retained third thanks to Vergne, while Jaguar Racing moved back into fourth ahead of Venturi. Renault e.Dams made progress, moving level on points with the Monegasque squad but remained outside the top five, while Dragon Racing secured their first points of the season courtesy of José María López.
