The 2019/20 Jaguar I-Pace eTrophy Season, officially known as the 2019/20 Jaguar I-Pace eTrophy, was the second and final season of the Jaguar I-Pace eTrophy series, supporting the 2019/20 ABB FIA Formula E Championship.[1] The second season of the eTrophy was to start on 22 November 2019 in Diriyah, before concluding ten races later at the London E-Prix.[1]
There would be several changes to the eTrophy package ahead of the new season, with the introduction of Attack Mode intended to add an element of strategy.[1] Furthermore, the 2020 Covid-19 Pandemic would see the eTrophy season put on hold after the third round, with a heavily revised calendar released on 17 June with seven races in Berlin to conclude the season on 13 August 2020.[2]
Simon Evans would open the season with victory, before defending Champion Sérgio Jimenez claimed two victories on the bounce to secure the lead.[3] A long break then followed before the season resumed with the first Berlin eTrophy Race, where Cacá Bueno secured victory.[4]
Jimenez responded with two victories in the following two Berlin races, before Evans won three on the bounce in the following three races.[5] Jimenez would enter the season finale with a three point lead over Evans, with those two the only drivers capable of claiming the crown.[5]
Ultimately it was Evans who secured the title on the final day, finishing second with Jimenez in third to claim the Pro class title.[6] In the Pro-Am class it was Fahad Algosaibi who secured the title by 62 points from Adalberto Baptista, having claimed six victories in the secondary class.[6]
The 2019/20 eTrophy was also revealed as the final season of the eTrophy, with Jaguar and FE deciding that the economic situation in the wake of the 2020 Covid-19 Pandemic made the series unsustainable.[7]
Background[]
Calendar[]
The Provisional calendar for the 2019/20 Jaguar I-Pace eTrophy was unveiled on 10 September 2019, and would support almost all of the rounds incorporated for the 2019/20 ABB FIA Formula E Championship.[1] That created a ten race calendar for the I-Pace series, which was to predominantly staged during FE's European season, skipping trips to Santiago, Marrakesh, Jakarta and Seoul to reduce team budgets and travel.[1]
Primary Plans[]
The eTrophy season was to open alongside the FE Championship with a pair of races staged in Ad Diriyah at the 2019 Diriyah E-Prix on 22 and 23 November 2019.[1] The eTrophy would then sit on the sidelines until 15 February 2020 before rejoining the FE under-card, supporting the 2020 Mexico City E-Prix at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez.[1] The eTrophy would then head to the Haitang Bay Circuit to support the Sanya E-Prix, before heading to Rome on 4 April 2020.[1] Two weeks later the eTrophy would have its sixth round at the Paris E-Prix, with the Berlin eTrophy race scheduled for the 30 May.[1]
The eTrophy would then head across the Atlantic to support the New York City E-Prix on 20 June, before returning to Europe with the FE Championship for the season finale in London.[1] The ninth and tenth rounds of the 2019/20 eTrophy Championship were to be staged on 25/26 July 2020 at the ExCeL E-Prix Circuit, completing both the FE and eTrophy seasons.[1]
Covid Collapse[]
Unfortunately the entire eTrophy schedule would be thrown out after the 2020 Mexico City eTrophy Race, after the fallout of the 2020 Covid-19 Pandemic caused the cancellation of various rounds of the FE Championship.[2] However, the eTrophy would get a season finale, with the series arranging a seven race finale in Berlin in support of a six race finale for the FE Championship.[2] The eTrophy would use three alternate versions of the Tempelhofring, beginning on 5 August 2020 with a race on a reversed version of the circuit within the Tempelhof Airfield.[2]
A second race around the reversed Tempelhofring was scheduled for 6 August 2020, before the eTrophy had a day off for maintenance and repair, alongside the FE Championship.[2] The finale would then resume on 8 August with a race around the standard Tempelhofring layout, before two races were to be staged on 9 August, with the latter race to be staged with a reversed grid.[2] The final pair of races to complete the season were then scheduled for 12 and 13 August, using a new version of the Tempelhofring with a heavily revised second sector.[2]
