The 2019 Diriyah eTrophy Race 1 was the opening round of the 2019/20 Jaguar I-Pace eTrophy Series, staged at the Ad Diriyah Street Circuit in Diriyah, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on 22 November 2019.[1] The race, held in support of the 2019 Diriyah E-Prix I, would be dominated from pole position by Simon Evans.[2]
Qualifying for the opening round of the season saw Evans sweep to pole position, the New Zealander beating defending Champion Sérgio Jimenez by a quarter of a second.[3] Abbie Eaton in the first of two guest entries would secure third on the grid, while Yaqi Zhang was the best of the Pro-Am drivers in fifth.[3]
The start of the race saw Evans charge into an early lead from pole, while Jimenez secured second ahead of a fast starting Alice Powell, who jumped compatriot Eaton off the grid.[2] Behind, Zhang retained the lead of Pro-Am field from Fahad Algosaibi, while Reema Juffali remained at the back of the ten car field, knowing that she had already made history as the first female Saudi Arabian racing driver to start a race in her home country.[2]
The race quickly settled down, with Evans easing into a healthy five second lead, while Powell harassed Jimenez for second, almost forcing her way past into the chicane several times.[2] With seventeen minutes left on the clock she finally pounced, sweeping around the outside of Jimenez as he opted to arm Attack Mode.[2]
The extra energy boost would, however, allow Jimenez to retaliate, although the Brazilian racer would opt to make a forceful move around the outside of Powell into turn one.[2] Indeed, the pair would make contact as Jimenez tried to cut across the nose of Powell's #7 Team Germany car into turn one, although neither would receive a penalty as Jimenez reclaimed second.[2]
Powell hence spent the rest of the race stalking the #10 car, notably recording the fastest lap of the race in the closing stages.[2] Behind them, meanwhile, Eaton would put up a ferocious defence of fourth to keep Zhang at bay, although a mistake in the final five minutes saw the #2 VIP car slide wide, gifting the position to the #9 Team China entry.[2]
Out front, meanwhile, there was no stopping Evans, who cruised across the line with a stunning five second lead to open his account for the season with a maximum score.[2] Behind, Jimenez resisted one last lunge from Powell into the final corner to secure second, while Zhang kept Eaton between him and Algosaibi to claim the honours in the Pro-Am class.[2]
Background[]
The Jaguar I-Pace eTrophy would return for the 2019/20 season, once again serving as the support series for the ABB FIA Formula E Championship.[1] As a result, the eTrophy Series for 2019/20 would kick off alongside FE at the Ad Diriyah Street Circuit in Diriyah, Saudi Arabia, supporting the 2019 Diriyah E-Prix I.[1] The circuit itself was unchanged for the eTrophy's second visit, although a modification had been made to accommodate the Series' new feature.[1]
Attack Ambition[]
New for 2019/20 for the eTrophy would be the implementation of Attack Mode, following the system's successful debut in the Formula E Championship the season before.[4] The system would see drivers have to drive off-line to activate an extra boost in power, which would last for two minutes and must be successfully activated twice by each driver.[4] In Diriyah the Attack Mode activation zone would be located at the turn eighteen/nineteen chicane.[1]
Pro Protagonists[]
Ahead of the new season the eTrophy would secure four full time Pro class entries for the season, somewhat down on expectations after having consistently had five in 2018/19.[5] Defending Champion Sérgio Jimenez had been retained by Jaguar Brazil for the season, with the Brazilian racer set to be partnered by Cacá Bueno for their sophomore season in the series.[5] However, Bueno would miss the opening round of the season due to commitments elsewhere, meaning the Jaguar Brazil squad would hand Mário Haberfeld his first race seat in a decade at the opening weekend.[6]
Elsewhere, Alice Powell had secured a full time seat in the series, joining Jaguar Team Germany after they moved up from the Pro-Am class for 2019/20.[7] The fourth Pro entry would then be occupied by Team Asia New Zealand and Simon Evans, who confirmed their participation in the second eTrophy campaign on the eve of the season opener.[8] That announcement came alongside the unveiling of the two Guest car entries for the opening weekend, with Abbie Eaton and Reema Juffali taking over the #1 and #2 Jaguar VIP Cars.[8]
Pro-Am Ambitions[]
In the Pro-Am category there would be three new faces in the initial four driver entry list, with Yaqi Zhang the only driver to retain his seat with Jaguar China Racing.[5] The Chinese racer would get a new teammate in the form of Chao Sun for the opening weekend, while Saudi Racing opted to field an entirely new line-up in their pair of cars.[5] The Saudi Arabian registered entry would hire Mashhur Bal Hejaila and Fahad Algosaibi to drive their cars, after reigning Pro-Am champion Bandar Alesayi left the series.[5]
