The 2019 Diriyah eTrophy Race was the second round of the 2019/20 Jaguar I-Pace eTrophy Series, staged at the Ad Diriyah Street Circuit in Diriyah, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on 23 November 2019.[1] The race would see Sérgio Jimenez secure his first victory of his title defence, as a red flag disrupted the race.[2]

Qualifying for the second race at the Diriyah circuit would see Jimenez secure pole position, beating Race 1 winner Simon Evans by almost half a second.[3] Behind them would be Alice Powell in the #7 car ahead of Yaqi Zhang, the first of the Pro-Am drivers, while Abbie Eaton was the better of the two Guest entries in sixth.[3]

The start of the race would see Jimenez ease into the lead, with Evans securing second unable to challenge the defending Champion into the chicane.[2] Behind, an excellent start from Zhang saw the #9 China Racing entry jump ahead of Powell in the #7 Team Germany car, while Fahad Algosaibi got into a fight with Mário Haberfeld.[2]

Before the end of the opening tour Powell would manage to force her way back ahead of Zhang, literally barging her way past the #9 car.[2] She, however, would find herself quickly falling away from the lead duo, with Jimenez and Evans exchanging fastest laps as they established a five second lead in the early stages.[2]

The intervention of Attack Mode would jumble the order in the midfield during the middle phase of the race, although Algosaibi and Haberfeld remained glued together.[2] On lap seven Haberfeld tried to make a move on the Saudi Arabian racer on the run to turn one, although his attempt to cut back inside the #13 car ended with Algosaibi slamming the outside wall.[2]

That incident brought out a red flag with Algosaibi's car left disabled in the barriers on the exit of turn one, with ten minutes spent waiting for the barriers to be restored.[2] After a Safety Car the race resumed, with Jimenez again easing away with Evans on his tail, while Powell tried to keep with them in third.[2]

That, ultimately, proved to be the story of the rest of the race, with Evans hounding Jimenez to the chequered flag, although the Brazilian racer remained resolute and duly secured victory with fastest lap.[2] Powell was five seconds back in third ahead of Eaton, who lunged past Zhang late on, although the Chinese racer would still finish the race as the lead Pro-Am driver in sixth overall behind Haberfeld.[2]

Background[]

There were no changes made to either the entry list of the Ad Diriyah Street Circuit for the second Jaguar I-Pace eTrophy race of the weekend, with rain set to remain at bay throughout the day.[1]

Opening Movements[]

Victory ensured that Simon Evans ended the opening day of the season with the lead in the Pro field, the New Zealander having opened his account with a maximum score with pole and victory. Sérgio Jimenez was hence six points behind after the first day, while Alice Powell and Mário Haberfeld were also on the board.

It was a similar story in the Pro-Am field too, with Yaqi Zhang have secured a maximum score to open the season, leaving him six clear of second placed Fahad Algosaibi. Furthermore, the two other entrants in the Pro-Am field, Chao Sun and Mashhur Bal Hejaila had also claimed points on the opening day.

Milestones[]

  • Fourth win for Sérgio Jimenez.
  • Seventh victory for Jaguar Brazil as an entrant.
  • Fifth and final Pro-Am victory for Yaqi Zhang.
  • Fifth and final Pro-Am victory for Jaguar China Racing as an entrant.

Standings[]

In the Pro Drivers' Championship it was Sérgio Jimenez who would end the opening weekend of the Championship with the lead, the Brazilian racer ahead of Simon Evans by virtue of having set fastest lap in the second Diriyah Race. Indeed, Jimenez and Evans had ended the second day of the season level on 36 points after a win, pole position, and second place apiece, leaving them both fourteen clear of Alice Powell in third.

In the Pro-Am field there was little surprise that Yaqi Zhang headed the table, two wins from pole position having left the Chinese racer with commanding 42 point tally. That translated into a sixteen point lead over teammate Chao Sun, while third placed Mashhur Bal Hejaila trailed Zhang by 23 points.
