The 2019 Monaco eTrophy Race, otherwise officially known as the 2019 Jaguar I-Pace eTrophy Monaco Race, was the seventh round of the 2018/19 FIA Jaguar I-Pace eTrophy, staged at the Circuit de Monaco in Monte Carlo, Monaco, on the 11 May 2019.[1] The race, staged in support of the 2019 Monaco E-Prix, saw the eTrophy series make its debut on the Monegasque streets.[1]

Qualifying would see Cacá Bueno secure a narrow pole position ahead of teammate Sérgio Jimenez, the pair split by just 0.034s.[2] Championship leader Bryan Sellers was next, ahead of Stefan Rzadzinski, while Bandar Alesayi was the best placed PRO-Am driver in seventh.[2]

Bueno duly aced the start of the race to claim an early lead, fending off a challenge from teammate Jimenez into Sainte Devote.[3] Behind, Katherine Legge tried to make ground on the opening lap, only to be forced into the barriers when Rzadzinski misjudged a gap.[3]

Legge's car was left stuck on the circuit, and would require the race to be stopped in order for it to be dragged clear.[3] After that the race resumed behind the safety car with twenty minutes left, with Bueno controlling the restart perfectly to keep teammate Jimenez at bay.[3]

Indeed, the two Brazilian Jaguars would run nose-to-tail for the rest of the race, with Jimenez making multiple attempts to pass.[3] Their bid for victory was aided by the fact that third placed Sellers was running in a wounded car, having been hit by Rzadzinski at the original start.[3]

Further down the field Yaqi Zhang was making a charge, passing his way up the PRO-Am order from tenth on the grid.[3] Indeed, Zhang would spend a fair amount of time squabbling with Alesayi for top spot in PRO-Am, before finally making a move stick late on.[3]

Out front, meanwhile Bueno would just keep his nose ahead of Jimenez to claim the win, with Sellers just holding onto his Championship lead with third.[3] Behind, Zhang finished fifth overall to secure top spot in PRO-Am, although Alesayi still held a comfortable lead in their Championship.[3]

Background[]

The Principality of Monaco and the infamous Circuit de Monaco returned to the ABB FIA Formula E Championship calendar in 2018/19, and so the Jaguar I-Pace eTrophy would make its debut on the Mediterranean coast in support.[1] Indeed, the eTrophy field would use the same E-Prix version of the Circuit de Monaco that was to host the 2019 Monaco E-Prix, in spite of potential issues about the width of the I-Paces on the circuit.[1] Indeed, there had been plans about FE and hence the eTrophy using the full Circuit de Monaco in 2019 due to the fastest, larger, cars, only for the FIA to veto the move.[4]

The guest driver for the Monaco E-Prix was announced as Anthony Beltoise, a three time starter in the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the son of 1972 Monaco Grand Prix winner Jean-Pierre Beltoise.[5]

Hailing Changes[]

Bryan Sellers had moved back to the top of the PRO Championship after his second victory of the campaign last time out in Paris, moving five points clear of Sérgio Jimenez at the head of the field. The Brazilian himself was now nine clear of Simon Evans in third, with another small six point gap back to Katherine Legge in fourth. Cacá Bueno was next, thirteen behind Legge, while Stefan Rzadzinski was still a distant sixth.

In the PRO-Am Championship it was still advantage Bandar Alesayi, although the Saudi Arabian racer had seen his lead reduced to 32 points amid the hail in Paris. His closest challenger was now teammate Ahmed Bin Khanen, who had leapt eight ahead of Yaqi Zhang after his maiden victory in Paris. Another fair gap followed before Célia Martin appeared in fourth, while Tao Wang, Qi Lin and Ziyi Z Zhang completed the table.

Standings[]

The gap atop the PRO Championship had come down to just a single point with three races to go, with Bryan Sellers just hanging on at the head of the field. Indeed, the American's tally of 93 points was enough to keep Sérgio Jimenez at bay ahead of the trip to Berlin, with clear air between themselves and third placed Simon Evans. Indeed, the New Zealander had ended the weekend some seventeen points off the lead, with Cacá Bueno closing up behind him in fourth.

Bandar Alesayi once again managed to extend his lead in the PRO-Am Championship, leaving Monte Carlo with a healthy 36 point advantage. His closest challenger was now Monaco race winner Yaqi Zhang, with the Saudi Arabian racer mathematically able to take the title in Berlin, if he could out-score Zhang by six points. Elsewhere, Ahmed Bin Khanen had slipped to third, 48 off the lead, while Ziyi Z Zhang had moved into the top five.
