2019 Berlin eTrophy Race 2019 New York City eTrophy Race 2

The 2019 New York City eTrophy Race 1, otherwise known as the 2019 Jaguar I-Pace eTrophy New York City Race, was the ninth and penultimate round of the 2018/19 FIA Jaguar I-Pace eTrophy, held at the Brooklyn Street Circuit in New York City, USA, on the 13 July 2019.[1] The race, staged in support of the 2019 New York City E-Prix I, would see Sérgio Jimenez sweep to victory and the Championship for Jaguar Brazil Racing.[1][2]

Qualifying for the penultimate eTrophy round of 2018/19 saw Jimenez sweep to pole position, as major title rival Bryan Sellers crashed out.[3] Indeed, Sellers' accident caused so much damage that the Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing squad were up against it to repair his car in time, as his teammate Kathering Legge claimed second, only to be relegated to fifth courtesy of a grid penalty.[3] Pole in Pro-Am, meanwhile, would go to Bandar Alesayi.[3]

Ultimately Sellers was unable to make the start, meaning Jimenez was the inaugural eTrophy Champion as long as he could maintain the lead.[2] The Brazilian racer duly made a clean start to secure top spot off the grid, while teammate Cacá Bueno slotted into second to fend off the attentions of Simon Evans.[2]

Unsurprisingly the Pro drivers in the field would ease clear of the Pro-Am crowd, with Alesayi able to keep his major title rival Yaqi Zhang at bay as they ran in fifth and sixth.[2] Behind, Célia Martin barged her way past guest driver Mark Hacking for eighth, before the Canadian was tipped into the barriers at turn ten by Ziyi Zhang while defending ninth.[2]

Hacking's car was left in a dangerous place, resulting in an appearance for the safety car to allow the Canadian's car to be removed.[2] However, while the accident had seemed rather innocuous, barring the race ending damage to Hacking's car, the marshals struggled to clear the circuit, meaning safety car remained out for a long time.[2]

Indeed, the SC was only withdrawn in time to start the final lap, with Jimenez acing the restart to sprint clear of teammate Bueno, who duly fended off the attentions of Evans in third.[2] Alesayi likewise got away from Yaqi Zhang at the restart to start the final tour, with no late manoeuvres to upset the order.[2]

With that the race was run, with Jimenez charging across the line to claim his second victory of the season and the Championship.[2] Bueno and Sellers held station in second and third, while Alesayi finished fifth overall behind Legge to claim the Championship honours in Pro-Am, as well as his fifth class win of the season.[2]

Background[]

The Jaguar I-Pace eTrophy returned to the 2018/19 ABB FIA Formula E Championship tour in New York City, with both series arriving in the American city for their final rounds.[1] In terms of circuit the Brooklyn Street Circuit was unchanged from FE's visit in 2018, although both FE and the eTrophy would operate from a new pitlane, set on the old start straight.[1] Otherwise the eTrophy field was good to go for its penultimate race of the season, with the guest driver for the two NYC eTrophy races revealed to be Canadian motorsport journalist Mark Hacking.[1][4]

A Brazilian Pretender[]

There had been some changes in the PRO Championship last time out in Berlin, with Sérgio Jimenez having moved to the top of the pack. Bryan Sellers was now in second, six off the new leader, while Cacá Bueno had dragged himself back into title contention after his third win of the season, sixteen off the lead. Simon Evans was also an outside shot for the title in fourth, with Katherine Legge was too far back to challenge in fifth.

Bandar Alesayi had retained the lead in the PRO-Am Championship despite retiring in Berlin, maintaining his seventeen point lead. That meat that the Saudi Arabian racer could claim the title in the first race in New York City, assuming he could out-score Yaqi Zhang by four points. Indeed, with two races to go Zhang was realistically the only driver who could beat Alesayi, with Ahmed Bin Khanen 38 points behind with just 42 left to fight for.

Standings[]

Victory, combined with Bryan Sellers failing to race, let alone score, ensured that Sérgio Jimenez was declared the Pro Champion with a race to spare, heading into the finale 22 points clear with just 21 left to fight for. Sellers would therefore be fighting to finish as runner-up in the finale, having also slipped behind Jimenez's teammate Cacá Bueno after the Brazilian claimed a podium finish. Simon Evans was also in the hunt for second, ending the afternoon on 98 points, while Katherine Legge was set to finish the campaign in fifth.

Likewise, the Pro-Am Championship had been settled with a race to spare, with Bandar Alesayi officially declared as the Champion with a 23 point advantage heading into the finale. Yaqi Zhang would therefore finish the inaugural Pro-Am Championship in second, with Ahmed Bin Khanen heading into the finale too far back to challenge the Chinese racer. Célia Martin, meanwhile, was set to finish fourth, with Ziyi Z Zhang rounding out the top five.
