The 2019 Paris eTrophy Race, officially known as the 2019 Jaguar I-Pace eTrophy Paris Race, was the sixth round of the 2018/19 FIA Jaguar I-Pace eTrophy, staged at the Circuit des Invalides in Paris, France, on the 27 April 2019. The race, which was staged in support of the 2019 Paris E-Prix, would see Bryan Sellers become the first overall repeat winner in the series' short history.

Qualifying had seen Sellers grab a maiden pole position on a damp circuit, defeating Cacá Bueno by a tenth of a second. Stefan Rzadzinski was next ahead of Sérgio Jimenez, Championship leader, while Bandar Alesayi claimed a dominant pole in PRO-Am ahead of Ahmed Bin Khanen.

Sellers duly translated pole position into an early lead, while Bueno fended off Rzadzinski into the first corner to claim second. The rest of the field managed to get off the grid cleanly, although with rain falling it was only a matter of time before the field was thinned.

Ultimately it was guest driver Archie Hamilton who was the first to make a mistake, locking up and slamming into Célia Martin midway through the second lap. Martin was able to limp away without too much damage, while Hamilton's Jaguar was stuck in the barriers.

The safety car was required to allow Hamilton's car to be recovered, before the race resumed, just as the rain began to fall harder. Sellers duly aced the restart to re-establish his lead, while Rzadazinski tried in vain to pass Bueno into turn three.

Unfortunately the conditions were deteriorating quickly, with hail soon pounding the circuit as the race ticked past ten minutes. Indeed, it was just as the officials began discussing what to do about the conditions that the second accident of the day occurred, with Bueno sliding straight into the barriers at turn thirteen with a puncture.

That accident brought out a safety car, although after a few minutes the race was red flagged due to damage to the barriers. Ultimately, however, there would be no restart, meaning Sellers was claimed the victor ahead of Rzadzinski and Jimenez with eleven minutes of racing left.

Furthermore, with the FIA opting to award full points as the race had officially ran for twenty minutes, Sellers' second victory moved him back to the top of the Championship. In PRO-Am, meanwhile, Bin-Khanen claimed victory after teammate Alesayi got caught up with Katherine Legge on the wrong side of Bueno's accident.

Background

The 2018/19 Jaguar I-Pace eTrophy followed the ABB FIA Formula E Championship to Paris for the sixth round of the season, using the same Circuit des Invalides as FE. Indeed, it was the eTrophy's first visit to the French capital, and would see two changes to the field ahead of the race. The first was the announcement of Guest driver Archie Hamilton, a former sportscar driver, while Jaguar China Racing announced that Ziyi Z Zhang would partner Yaqi Zhang in PRO-Am.

Ahead of the race there were rumours of a change in format for the eTrophy Championship, with various revisions discussed for the 2019/20 season. The most likely of these proposals was the implementation of the Attack Mode system used by Formula E, a relatively simple change given that all E-Prix circuits for the 2018/19 season had the system in place. There were also discussions about how to expand the grid, and to tempt younger drivers to the series in future campaigns.

Championship Challengers

Victory in Rome last time out had propelled Sérgio Jimenez to the top of the PRO Championship after the Rome race, leaving the Italian capital five clear at the head of the field. Bryan Sellers was his closest challenger, climbing to second, while Simon Evans dropped to third, six off the lead having arrived in Italy as the leader. Katherine Legge had also lost ground while slipping to fourth, ten off the lead, while Cacá Bueno remained in title contention in fifth.

Bandar Alesayi had once again extended his already substantial lead in the PRO-Am Championship, leaving Rome with a 42 point advantage. Yaqi Zhang was now his closest challenger, although he was just a point ahead of Alesayi's teammate Ahmed Bin Khanen, who had been dominating the class in Rome until his slip. Frenchwoman Célia Martin, meanwhile, had secured her self in fourth, albeit with a little over half the points of third placed Khanen.

Milestones

Standings

Bryan Sellers moved back to the top of the Championship after his second victory of the campaign, moving five points clear of Sérgio Jimenez at the head of the field. The Brazilian himself was now nine clear of Simon Evans in third, with another small six point gap back to Katherine Legge in fourth. Cacá Bueno was next, thirteen behind Legge, while Stefan Rzadzinski was still a distant sixth.

In the PRO-Am Championship it was still advantage Bandar Alesayi, although the Saudi Arabian racer had seen his lead reduced to 32 points. His closest challenger was now teammate Ahmed Bin Khanen, who had leapt eight ahead of Yaqi Zhang after his maiden victory in Paris. Another fair gap followed before Célia Martin appeared in fourth, while Tao Wang, Qi Lin and Ziyi Z Zhang completed the table.
