The 2020 Rookie Test, alternately known as the 2020 Marrakech Test, was the first and only in-season test for the 2019/20 ABB FIA Formula E Championship, staged at the Circuit Moulay El Hassan in Marrakesh, Morocco, on 1 March 2020.[1] The fourth running of the "Rookie Test" format, the Test would see all twelve teams field drivers who had not raced in FE before, but met the requirements to qualify for an E-Licence without holding one.[2]
The Rookie Test would see a new track record set during the afternoon session, with Nick Cassidy piloting his Envision Virgin run Audi e-tron FE06 to a 1:16.467.[3] The sister car run by the factory Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler team, piloted by Kelvin van der Linde, topped the morning session with a 1:17.505.[3]
The 24 rookie drivers also covered an impressive amount of distance, completing a combined tally of 1,965 laps, the equivalent of 5,838.015 km (3627.574 mi).[3] ROKiT Venturi test/reserve driver Norman Nato covered the most distance individually with 96 tours of Marrakesh, while the four Mercedes-Benz powertrains in the field, fielded by Venturi and the Mercedes factory team, covered the most distance of any manufacturer at 353 laps.[3]
Background[]
Speculation about where the annual Rookie Test would be staged began after the release of the provisional calendar for the 2019/20 ABB FIA Formula E Championship, as the Marrakesh E-Prix had been dropped from the calendar.[4] That, however, was resolved following the cancellation of the 2020 Hong Kong E-Prix, which resulted in the 2020 Marrakesh E-Prix being added to the calendar, with the series returning to an unchanged Circuit Moulay El Hassan.[1] As a purpose built circuit the Circuit Moulay El Hassan was able to host a test with minimal disruption, meaning FE were free to host a test on 1 March 2020, the day after the E-Prix.[5]
Experience vs Potential[]
Late Change[]
There would be one late change to the entry list for the test on the eve of the test day, as Nicolas Lapierre was handed the #25 DS Techeetah seat in place of Rossiter.[6] The French veteran was drafted in to replace Rossiter, who had been called upon to take part in FP1 at the Marrakesh E-Prix for Jean-Éric Vergne as the two-time FE Champion was struggling with illness.[6] In order to take part in FP1 Rossiter was issued with an E-Licence which ruled him out of taking part in the Test, and hence allowed Lapierre to make his FE return for the first time since taking part in the 2015 Donington Test.[6]
