The 2021/22 Formula E Season, formally known as the 2021/22 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship was the eighth season of the FIA Formula E Championship, and the second season of the series as a World Championship.[1] The season was the last for the Generation 2 ruleset, which had been used by the championship since 2018/19, as well as the last for Michelin as the series' tyres supplier and FE manufacturers Mercedes, BMW and Audi.[2]

Nyck de Vries would start the campaign as the reiging Formula E World Champion, with the Dutch pilot opting to defend his crown with the Mercedes-EQ Formula E Team.[3] Likewise, Mercedes-EQ would defend their Teams' Championship title from 2020/21, although their suppliers Mercedes had already announced that this would be their last season in the series.[3]

Elsewhere 2021/22 would see FE and the FIA introduce a new qualifying format to the series, which would see the field initially split into two groups based on Championship position, before each group got 12 minutes in order to complete as many laps as they wanted to set a time.[4] The fastest four drivers from each group would then enter a series of duels, with the fastest from Group A taking on the fourth fastest from Group B, with the winners from the Quarter-Finals progressing to the Semi-Finals.[4] The Semi Finals would then dictate who would go through to the final and who would start on the second row, while the Final saw the fastest two in the Semis duel for pole position, as well as the bonus points for achieving that feat, a change intended to end the randomness that the previous FE quali-format had created.[4]

Regardless of the new quali-format, de Vries and Mercedes would start the season in ominious fashion, with the Dutchman leading teammate Stoffel Vandoorne to a dominant one-two at the season opening 2022 Diriyah E-Prix I, Vandoorne having also become the first driver to claim pole in the new system.[5] de Vries then took pole for the Diriyah E-Prix II but fell back down the field during the race, although it would be a double podium for Mercedes' customer team ROKiT Venturi Racing that kept the German marque at the head of the field, with Edoardo Mortara claiming victory while teammate Lucas di Grassi earned third.[6]

The 2022 Mexico City E-Prix saw Mercedes' streak come to an end, as Pascal Wehrlein led André Lotterer to a maiden victory and one-two finish for Porsche in FE, in what was the fastest race in FE history.[7] Mitch Evans and Jaguar then came to the fore with a double victory on the streets of Rome, before Vandoorne secured his first (and ultimately only) victory of the season at the 2022 Monaco E-Prix.[8]

Berlin saw Mortara return to the winner's circle with victory in the first race around Tempelhof, a day in which the Swiss ace would also score his first pole position at his 54th E-Prix, a new series record.[9] de Vries then denied Mortara a Berlin double by claiming victory in the 2022 Berlin E-Prix II, in a race which saw Mercedes powertrains finish 1-2-3-4 at the head of the field.[10]

Evans and Mortara would then trade wins in Jakarta and Marrakesh, setting themselves up as the main two challengers to Vandoorne at the head of the Championship hunt.[11] The next four victories then headed to drivers effectively out of the title hunt, as Nick Cassidy won despite crashing out of the rain affected 2022 New York City E-Prix I, followed by António Félix da Costa, Jake Dennis and Lucas di Grassi claiming victories in the 2022 New York City E-Prix II, 2022 London E-Prix I and 2022 London E-Prix II respectively.[12]

Heading into the final two races of the season in Seoul Vandoorne held a healthy 36 point advantage over Evans, while Mortara was still just in the hunt, but had to overcome a 57 point deficit, with 58 points left in play.[12] Evans duly swept to victory in the Seoul E-Prix I to keep his title hopes alive, although a seventh place finish with Vandoorne claiming second in the 2022 Seoul E-Prix II would ultimately ensure that Vandoorne secured the title.[13]

Vandoorne hence became the 2021/22 Champion, while Mercedes-EQ would succesfully defend their FE Teams' Championship as Mercedes left the series, their spot to be taken by the incoming McLaren Formula E Team.[14] Elsewhere, 2021/22 would see several landmarks achieved during the season, including the 100th E-Prix being celebrated at the season finale, 8,000 km of racing since the start of the series being completed at the Berlin E-Prix I, as well as see di Grassi become the first driver to surpass 1,000 points during his FE career.[14]

Background[]

There were two fewer manufacturers fielding full factory teams for the final year of the Spark SRT05e era, with Audi and BMW having both cancelled their FE programmes in late 2020.[15][16] Their exit left both ABT Sportsline and Andretti Formula E without confirmed FE programmes for the 2021/22 season, having both been entries since the inaugural 2014/15 campaign.[15] Their exit also left Envision Racing without a base car for the season having been an Audi customer team, although a two-season homologation ruling, implemented ahead of the 2020/21 season due to the Covid-19 Pandemic, meant that all three could potentially continue to use the cars they had fielded during the previous season.[17]

Auxiliary Entries[]

On the eve of the 2021 Diriyah E-Prix I Andretti confirmed that they would enter the 2021/22 season with BMW powertrains, but would effectively be relegated to a non-supported customer team.[18] As a result of the change in status Andretti would be responsible for developing software of the BMW iFE.21 during the 2021/22 campaign, although due to the two year homologation rule they would not fall behind the rest of the field due to a lack of hardware development.[18] Envision Virgin, meanwhile, would also manage to enter the 2021/22 season, retaining the use of their Audi e-tron FE07s from 2020/21, while ABT dropped out of the series having failed to repurchase Audi's entry.[19]

Germanic Exodus II[]

At the end of the 2020/21 season Mercedes-Benz revealed that they too would end their FE involvement, although they would wait until the end of the 2021/22 season to make their departure.[20] Their exit placed the future of two teams in danager, with the factory backed Mercedes-EQ Formula E Team looking for a new owner, having taken over the HWA Racelab entry in 2019/20, as well as customer entry the Venturi Formula E Team.[20] Mercedes cited their continuing involvement in the FIA Formula One World Championship as the reason for their departure, although they would seek to try and find a buyer for their FE team before the end of the 2021/22 season.[20]

Calendar[]

The provisional calendar for the 2021/22 FE World Championship was released on 8 July 2021, and would feature several changes and a reduction in the number of double headers compared to 2020/21.[1] Indeed, only the Diriyah, New York City and London E-Prix would retain their double headed nature, while a minimum of three cities were set to make their FE debuts.[1]

Continental Expansion[]

The season was set to open on 28 - 29 January at the Diriyah E-Prix with two races, both expected to be staged at night, forming the opening meeting of the season.[1] Two weeks later the Mexico City E-Prix would return, before the series headed into South Africa for the inaugural Cape Town E-Prix on 26 February.[1] That would be followed by a race in China on 19 March, which had not been allocated a host city on the provisional calendar.[1]

9 April saw FE return to Rome, before the soon-to-be annual Monaco E-Prix on 30 April as part of a pseudo-European phase of the season.[1] The Berlin E-Prix followed on 14 May ahead of a trip to a yet to be announced round on 4 June 2022, with Eindhoven in the Netherlands among the favourites for the slot.[1] The Series' return to Canada would have been made on 2 July with the inaugural Vancouver E-Prix, before a double header in New York on 16 - 17 July,[1] but was eventually cancelled and the Marrakesh E-Prix made its return in the former's stead.

London hosted its two round of the 2021/22 FE Championship on 30 - 31 July at the ExCeL E-Prix Circuit, before the Series headed to new territory in South Korea.[1] Indeed, after two false starts the Series finally made its debut in Seoul on 13 - 14 August, which also concluded the Gen 2 era.[1]

Initial Modifications[]

On 15 October the World MotorSport Council run by the FIA produced an updated calendar ahead of the 2021/22 season, which saw the trip to South Africa dropped.[4] Instead, the fourth round, which was pushed back to 5 March, would be relisted as "To Be Announced", while the inaugural Jakarta E-Prix would join the tour as the ninth race of the campaign.[4] There would be no further news on the other "TBA" on the calendar, set to be staged in China, although the Sanya E-Prix was still tipped to make a return.[4]

On 15 December 2021 the final version of the calendar was released, following the December meeting of the WMSC in Paris, France, which saw the two TBA rounds removed and replaced by two double headers.[21] The rounds in Rome and Berlin would host an additional race apiece, meaning the calendar retained its sixteen race format, but was left with a two month break between the trip to Mexico and the arrival in Italy in April.[21] On 23 April it was announced that the race in Vancouver had been postponed until the 2022/23 season, after the promoters failed to get permission to host the event in the Canadian city.[22]

A replacement round for Vancouver was sought immediately, with the return of the Marrakesh E-Prix proving to be the solution after being announced on 11 May 2022, with the return to the Circuit Moulay El Hassan being staged on Vancouver's original date.[23]

Testing[]

The plans for the annual pre-season test were kept out of public knowledge until the early autumn of 2021, and would only be announced three weeks before the start of the test.[27] As with the previous campaigns in the "Gen 2" era, FE would host a three day test at the Circuit Ricardo Tormo in Valencia, Spain, which would take place between 29 November and 2 December.[27] All eleven teams were to take part in the test, with the first two days featuring two, three hour tests each, while the final day was to provide for unlimited testing across a six hour window.[27]

Furthermore, the series was set to test out its new qualifying format during the test, while an unofficial race scenario, to test the updated Safety Car/Full Course Yellow rules was also expected.[27]

Rules and Regulations[]

There would be several modifications to both the sporting and technical rulebook ahead of the 2021/22 Championship, with an increase in power and a new qualifying format the main highlights.[4]

Technical[]

For the 2021/22 campaign the FE field would race with more power than any previous season, with cars now set to race at 220 kW (c. 295 bhp) instead of 200 kW (c. 268 bhp).[66] This power increase was intended to further test the efficiency of the powertrains, requiring more sustained power output throughout the race, and would result in a tweak to the Attack Mode output too.[4] Indeed, for 2021/22 Attack Mode would increase from 235 kW (c. 315 bhp) to 250 kW (c. 335 bhp), the same as when the cars are in their qualifying mode, while there was no initial news on how FanBoost would be altered.[4]

Sporting[]

Elsewhere, there would be changes to the qualifying format for the 2021/22 season, as well as an updated ruleset for Safety Car/Full Course Yellow scenarios.[4]

Destiny Duels: Qualifying[]

For 2021/22 FE would feature a qualifying format previously used by Superleague Formula, with drivers facing a series of duels to set the grid.[4] The session would start with the field split between even and odd placings in the Championship, with eleven cars going out in two groups to set times at 220 kW.[4] The fastest four from each group would then progress to the knockout stage as a series of duels, beginning with at the quarter final.[4]

The first duel in the quarter final would see the fastest from Group A battle against the fourth fastest driver from Group B.[4] Second in Group A would then battle third from Group B, before A3 battled B2, and finally A4 fought against B1.[4] The winners from each duel would then progress to the semi-finals, with the winner from A1 -v- B4 facing A2 -v- B3, while A3 -v- B2 would battle the A4 -v- B1 victor.[4] The winners from the semi-finals would then fight for pole position in a one-on-one duel, with all of the knockout phase laps set at the full qualifying power output of 250 kW.[4]

The December 2021 meeting of the WMSC implemented further revisions to the qualifying format, with the time for each group extended to twelve minutes, opened up the option for teams to change tyres during the session, and removed the bonus point for the fastest time in the group stage.[21]

Time Extension: SC/FCY[]

Elsewhere, the Safety Car/Full Course Yellow rules would be modified for the eighth FE season, largely as a reaction to the farcical 2021 Valencia E-Prix I which saw numerous drivers fail to finish due to multiple SC periods.[4] Instead of reductions in available energy based on time behind the SC/FCY, the 2021/22 season would see time added to the initial 45 minute + 1 Lap limit for every minute under such conditions.[4] There would be a maximum limit of ten minutes of additional time, and was partially intended to better highlight the progress in efficiency that FE had made then by reducing available power.[4]

A minimum of 40 Super Licence points, scored in the previous three seasons, are required for a driver to apply for an FIA Super Licence in order to compete in Formula One.[68] A driver must also be over the age of 18, hold an International Grade A competition licence and a valid road car licence, complete an FIA theory test on F1 sporting regulations, and have completed two full (80% or more) seasons of an FIA accredited Championship.[68]

e-Licence[]

In order to compete in the FIA Formula E Championship a driver must hold an e-Licence, which they can obtain by holding 20 FIA Super Licence points, and attend a FIA training session on electrical safety.[67] Any driver that holds or has held an FIA Super Licence is automatically eligible for an e-Licence.[67]
