The 2022 London E-Prix I, otherwise known as the 2022 Sabic London E-Prix I, was the thirteenth race of the 2021/22 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, staged at the ExCeL E-Prix Circuit in Newham, London, UK, on 30 July 2022.[1][2] The race would be staged on a modified version of the ExCeL Circuit, with a reduced energy allocation due to the circuit's layout, and would see Jake Dennis become only the second driver in FE history to secure a Grand Slam.[3][4]
Qualifying for the London E-Prix would see Dennis sweep to pole position, defeating Stoffel Vandoorne in the Final by just over a tenth of a second after setting the fastest times in both the Quarter and Semi finals.[5] Dennis' path to the final would see his two earlier chart topping times move him past Maximilian Günther and Nyck de Vries, while Vandoorne would defeat André Lotterer and then Sérgio Sette Câmara on his run to the final bout.[5]
A huge roar would accompany Dennis launch off the grid at the start of the race, with the #27 Avalanche Andretti sprinting clear to hold the lead into the first corner, blocking any potential lunge from Vandoorne down the inside.[4] Behind there would be some carnage as Sam Bird was forced to clamber over the inside kerb at turn one in his bid to gain ground, only to hit the side of Edoardo Mortara and then get spun around by the Swiss racer at turn two.[4]
Bird was out with heavy damage, while Mortara's race was effectively over as he had to limp back to the pits for a new nose and inspection of his suspension, rejoining almost a lap down.[4] On track, meanwhile, Dennis would establish himself in the lead ahead of Vandoorne, while Sette Câmara caused Mercedes a scare by scything past de Vries on lap three, leaving the #7 Dragon/Penske, with nothing to lose, on the tail of the Championship leader.[4]
With that Attack Mode came into play, with de Vries and Robin Frijns the first drivers in the top half of the field to arm the Boost on lap seven, while Dennis led Vandoorne and Sette Câmara through the activation zone a lap later.[4] That exchange would see de Vries jump back ahead of the #7 Dragon/Penske, while Oliver Askew, who to that point had held on to the lead quartet, fell away with Günther in close attendance.[4]
The second round of AM for the leaders was initiated by de Vries and Sette Câmara, although when Dennis led Vandoorne into the zone a couple of laps later they would remain ahead of the Dutchman and the Brazilian.[4] Indeed, that proved to be the end of Sette Câmara's challenge for the podium as the #7 Dragon/Penske fell away from the leaders, falling into the sights of Askew as the American pilot himself was caught by a charging Nick Cassidy.[4]
With ten minutes to the #37 Envision Racing had elbowed its way past both Askew and Sette Câmara and was off to hunt down de Vries, while Günther and Mitch Evans joined the growing queue behind Sette Câmara.[4] Sette Câmara subsequently fell to all three of them and was dropping back towards António Félix da Costa in ninth at a rate of knots, while Cassidy caught de Vries for third and Evans drew onto Günther's tail.[4]
Two laps to go and Cassidy was in position to strike at de Vries, although the defending Champion would be overly aggressive in his defence, moving twice to block the New Zealander into turn one, before deploying a similar tactic to start the final tour.[4] Evans, meanwhile, would have to wait until the final lap to get into striking distance behind Günther, and would duly pass the Nissan e.Dams on the final lap as the German pilot had to slow to conserve energy.[4]
Out front, meanwhile, Dennis was in imperious form, setting fastest lap en-route to his first victory since the 2021 visit to the ExCeL, having led every lap of the E-Prix.[4] Vandoorne would finish in second to add to his increasingly comfortable Championship lead, while de Vries was third across the line, only to be slapped with a five second time penalty post-race due to his aggressive defending.[4][6] Cassidy hence completed the podium ahead of Askew and Evans, de Vries ending up in sixth ahead of da Costa, Günther limped across the line to secure eighth, while further penalties shuffled Lucas di Grassi and Pascal Wehrlein into the final points paying positions.[4][6]
Background[]
For the thirteenth race of the campaign the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship found itself in London, UK, and the ExCeL arena in the Royal Victoria Dock for a second successive season.[2] The circuit had been modified for the 2022 visit, with the double hairpin midway through the second sector replaced by a chicane reminiscent of the old "Bus Stop" at Spa-Francorchamps, and the Swimming Pool section of the Circuit de Monaco.[7] There was also a change to the available energy for the field due to the layout of the ExCeL Circuit, with the available energy reduced to 46 kWh from the usual 52 kWh after the reduction of the 2021 London E-Prix was deemed too little, and had contributed to the chaotic nature of the event.[3]
On the eve of the meeting it was revealed that Sabic, a chemical specialist firm, would be the title sponsor of both London E-Prix races amid a wider deal to sponsor the FE Championship.[1]
ABT Additions[]
Away from the London E-Prix and there would be news of another team deal for the 2022/23 season, as ABT Sportsline squad announced their chosen manufacturer for their FE return in Season IX.[8] As expected, the German squad would rejoin the Series as a customer team after securing a deal to use Mahindra powertrains for 2022/23, alongside the factory Mahindra Racing effort.[8] ABT also confirmed that they would announce their driver line-up ahead of the 2021/22 season finale in Seoul E-Prix, with various former FE drivers in contention alongside several new faces to the series.[8]
NYC's New Leader[]
Second place would move Stoffel Vandoorne to the top of the Championship as the trip to New York City came to a conclusion, the Belgian pilot having increased his tally to 155 points with four races to go. Edoardo Mortara, former leader, had slipped eleven off the lead in second after a difficult weekend, while Mitch Evans had moved up to third, and just five behind the Swiss pilot. Jean-Éric Vergne had lost ground in fourth after a double non-score, his first pointless weekend of the season, while Robin Frijns and António Félix da Costa had both moved past the 100 point mark in fifth and sixth, but were effectively out of the title fight.
In the Teams' Championship the season-long game of leap-frog between Mercedes and their customers ROKiT Venturi had continued in New York, with the German marque ending the weekend ten points ahead of the Monegasques at the head of the hunt. Venturi themselves occupied second, but found that their 228 point tally was the same as third placed DS Techeetah, only their tally of three wins to the Sino-French squad's one keeping them ahead on count-back. Jaguar Racing, meanwhile, were in a lonely fourth ahead of Envision Racing, while Dragon/Penske were still the only pointless team in the field at the foot of the table.

Qualifying[]
Qualifying for the 2022 London E-Prix I would be conducted according to the knockout format, introduced ahead of season eight.[10] The field would be split into two groups of eleven drivers, based on Championship position, with each group then getting ten minutes on track to complete as many laps as they wished at 220 kW.[10] The fastest eight overall would then proceed to the knockout phase, now running at the maximum 250 kW qualifying mode, with the fastest from group A against the fourth fastest from group B and so on, until four drivers were left.[10]
Those four would move on to the Semi-Final, with the winner of A1/B4 taking on the victor of A2/B3, while the triumphant driver of A3/B2 would take on A4/B1's winner.[10] The winners from those duels would then go into the final, with the winner of that duel taking pole, while the runner-up would start from second, before any grid penalties were applied.[10]

Milestones[]
- Third career victory for Jake Dennis.
- Dennis became only the second driver to claim a Grand Slam since António Félix da Costa at the 2020 Berlin E-Prix I.
- Andretti Formula E secured their eighth win as an entrant.
- BMW scored their eighth victory as a powertrain supplier.
Standings[]
Stoffel Vandoorne had extended his lead atop the Championship after his measured run to second in the opening battle of London, the Belgian pilot having moved 24 points clear. His closest challenger would be in the form of Mitch Evans as the New Zealander had ascended to second, five points head of Edoardo Mortara who had led the Championship just two races before. Behind, Jean-Éric Vergne faced a 45 point gap back in fourth, while António Félix da Costa, Robin Frijns and Nyck de Vries all remained in mathematical contention, but would have to outscore Vandoorne in the 2022 London E-Prix II to keep any hopes of challenging alive.
The Mercedes-EQ Formula E Team continued to head the charge in the Teams' Championship, the German squad heading the rest of the field by 30 points midway through the weekend in London. DS Techeetah had emerged as their closest challengers in second, while former leaders ROKiT Venturi had slipped to third, a further four behind the Sino-French effort. Jaguar Racing were next up in fourth ahead of Envision Racing, Porsche Formula E Team were a lonely sixth, while Avalanche Andretti had moved to within ten points of the 100 point barrier after their biggest points haul of the season.
