The 2022 London E-Prix II, officially known as the 2022 SABIC London E-Prix II, was the fourteenth race of the 2021/22 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, staged on 31 July 2022 at the ExCeL E-Prix Circuit in Newham, London, UK.[1][2] The race would see Lucas di Grassi secure his first win with ROKiT Venturi Racing, having used the Attack Mode boost tactically to get ahead of race leader Jake Dennis.[3]
Dennis would secure his second pole position in a row in qualifying, the Brit being roared on by his home fans for the second day in a row to defeat di Grassi in the final by over eight tenths of a second.[4] The #27 Avalanche Andretti would defeat Sébastien Buemi and then António Félix da Costa after topping Group A, while di Grassi forged his path to the final by defeating Oliver Askew and Antonio Giovinazzi having topped Group B.[4]
The start of the race would be a repeat of the 2022 London E-Prix I for Dennis, with the Brit surging off the grid cleanly to grab the lead and cover off any attempt at a lunge from di Grassi into the first corner.[3] Behind, Giovinazzi tried to make a move around the outside of di Grassi but quickly had to set about keeping Nyck de Vries at bay, while the rest of the field made it through the first two corners with only minor contact.[3]
Instead it was the exit of turn six where the first major incident of the day occurred, with Oliver Rowland getting fed into the outside wall by Oliver Askew which briefly saw the #30 Mahindra tipped into a wheelie.[3] Rowland duly came crashing down and clipped the back of Stoffel Vandoorne, although the Belgian pilot continued without issue and would go on to hit the back of Pascal Wehrlein as they battled with Mitch Evans for tenth.[3]
The race would barely settle before the Safety Car was required for the first time all weekend, as Jean-Éric Vergne came to a stop on track with a radiator failure, moments after Dan Ticktum had to stop at the penultimate corner having taken the right-front off of his car at turn twenty.[3] After three minutes the race resumed, with Dennis getting a strong restart to resecure the lead, while de Vries would opt to take his first Attack Mode boost of the afternoon, falling behind Sébastien Buemi only to rally back instantly and reclaim fifth.[3]
Giovinazzi was defending for all he was worth to hold third from da Costa in the mean time, although his time in the sun was ended after ten minutes when he was forced to serve a drive-through penalty for power overuse, dumping him to the back.[3] de Vries, meanwhile, would briefly get ahead of da Costa before the Portuguese racer reclaimed third, while Evans would battle his way past Buemi, having dragged Vandoorne up with him through the field to that point.[3]
The second AM exchange saw Dennis fall behind another driver for the first time all weekend, although the #27 Avalanche Andretti would get back ahead of di Grassi's #11 Venturi when the Brazilian pilot armed his third and final boost.[3] Behind, meanwhile, de Vries would muscle third from da Costa, leaving the Portuguese pilot to fall into the sights of Evans, while Edoardo Mortara saw his title hopes end with an ambitious lunge on Sam Bird that sent the #48 Venturi sliding backwards into turn one.[3]
With eight minutes to go the race seemed to be in Dennis' hands, the Brit having delayed his final AM use and successfully resisted di Grassi's attentions when the #11 Venturi had the boost.[3] However, after arming his third AM boost and slipping behind di Grassi, Dennis' pace seemed to desert him, with the Brit simply unable to recover the lead he had lost even with the additional 13% of power, and would instead fall back into the clutches of de Vries.[3]
Into extra time and Evans was inching towards the fight for second, only for a failure with three laps to go to leave him stranded in the escape road at the chicane and out of the race, the #9 Jaguar having betrayed him while trying to get onto the podium.[3] Furthermore, that failure would gift fourth to Championship leader Vandoorne, who was running on his own ahead of da Costa and was about to see his Championship lead balloon out to 36 points as all of his title rivals had failed to score.[3]
Indeed, that settled the race for the leaders, with di Grassi cruising across the line to secure victory, while Dennis kept de Vries at bay with a strong final lap to claim second.[3] Vandoorne claimed fourth and complete control of the Championship with two races to go, while da Costa was a lonely fifth ahead of Buemi and Frijns.[3] Bird was next up ahead of Sérgio Sette Câmara, who secured his first points of the campaign, while Pascal Wehrlein claimed the final point in tenth ahead of Alexander Sims and André Lotterer, who had both started on the back row of the grid.
Background[]
The ExCeL E-Prix Circuit would remain unchanged for the second race of the weekend, although rain overnight had affected the outdoor portion of the circuit, washing away the rubber laid down on Friday and Saturday during the 2022 London E-Prix I.[2]
Vandoorne's Edge[]
Stoffel Vandoorne had extended his lead atop the Championship after his measured run to second in the opening battle of London, the Belgian pilot having moved 24 points clear. His closest challenger would be in the form of Mitch Evans as the New Zealander had ascended to second, five points head of Edoardo Mortara who had led the Championship just two races before. Behind, Jean-Éric Vergne faced a 45 point gap back in fourth, while António Félix da Costa, Robin Frijns and Nyck de Vries all remained in mathematical contention, but would have to outscore Vandoorne in the Second London E-Prix to keep any hopes of challenging alive.
The Mercedes-EQ Formula E Team continued to head the charge in the Teams' Championship, the German squad heading the rest of the field by 30 points midway through the weekend in London. DS Techeetah had emerged as their closest challengers in second, while former leaders ROKiT Venturi had slipped to third, a further four behind the Sino-French effort. Jaguar Racing were next up in fourth ahead of Envision Racing, Porsche Formula E Team were a lonely sixth, while Avalanche Andretti had moved to within ten points of the 100 point barrier after their biggest points haul of the season.

Qualifying[]
Qualifying for the 2022 London E-Prix II would be conducted according to the knockout format, introduced ahead of season eight.[6] The field would be split into two groups of eleven drivers, based on Championship position, with each group then getting ten minutes on track to complete as many laps as they wished at 220 kW.[6] The fastest eight overall would then proceed to the knockout phase, now running at the maximum 250 kW qualifying mode, with the fastest from group A against the fourth fastest from group B and so on, until four drivers were left.[6]
Those four would move on to the Semi-Final, with the winner of A1/B4 taking on the victor of A2/B3, while the triumphant driver of A3/B2 would take on A4/B1's winner.[6] The winners from those duels would then go into the final, with the winner of that duel taking pole, while the runner-up would start from second, before any grid penalties were applied.[6]

- Venturi Formula E Team scored their sixth win as an entrant.
- Mercedes earned their thirteenth win as a manufacturer.
Standings[]
The title would be Stoffel Vandoorne's to lose heading into the final two races in Seoul, with the Belgian pilot holding a 36 point lead after his title rivals all failed to score in the second London race. Indeed, victory for Vandoorne in the first race in Seoul would earn him the title, with Mitch Evans needing to outscore the Belgian by at least seven points in the first Seoul race in order to keep his title hopes alive. For Edoardo Mortara the target in the first Seoul E-Prix would be to outscore Vandoorne by eleven, while Jean-Éric Vergne was still mathematically in the hunt, but faced a huge 57 point gap with only 58 left to fight for.
In the Teams' Championship it was likewise all in Mercedes' hands heading to South Korea, with the German squad holding a healthy 36 point lead over their closest challengers. Those challengers were in the form of customer team ROKiT Venturi, who would have to score at least nine points more than the factory Mercedes squad to remain in the hunt, while DS Techeetah had to best the factory Mercedes team by twenty in the first Korean bout to retain their hopes. Jaguar Racing in fourth, meanwhile, were 91 points behind and hence were still mathematical contenders, but would need a maximum score in both races and see Mercedes claim less than 3 points across the final two races.
