The 2022 New York City E-Prix I, formally known as the 2022 ABB Formula E New York City E-Prix, was the eleventh race of the 2021/22 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, staged at the Brooklyn Street Circuit in New York City, New York State, USA, on 16 July 2022.[1] The race was the second of the season to be staged in North America, after plans to hold a race in Vancouver, Canada, were abandoned, and would see heavy rain ultimately decide the outcome of the race.[1][2]
Qualifying would also be affected by rain, as Nick Cassidy survived from Group B to secure his third career pole position, defeating Stoffel Vandoorne in the Final on a damp but rapidly drying Brooklyn Street Circuit.[3] En-route to the final Cassidy had secured measured victories against Sam Bird and then Pascal Wehrlein, while Vandoorne defeated Alexander Sims and then edged out Lucas di Grassi in his run to the final duel.[3]
The circuit was completely dry when the field assembled on the grid, and a perfect launch would catapult Cassidy into an unopposed lead into the first corner to leave Vandoorne looking over his shoulder to hold second.[2] The Belgian racer would ultimatley fall to a fast starting di Grassi as they braked for the left-hander, while Sébastien Buemi would also sweep past the #5 Mercedes with a run around the outside of turn one.[2]
Behind the field were fairly well behaved, although at turn six there would be drama, with Antonio Giovinazzi slamming into the back of Mitch Evans, which in turn saw the #9 Jaguar punt Jean-Éric Vergne into the wall at turn seven.[2] Evans continued without issue, Giovinazzi retired, while Vergne would lose half a lap trying to get his car pointing in the right direction, and was hence left hoping for a Safety Car to back the field back up.[2]
With that the race soon settled, with di Grassi and Buemi stalking Cassidy, while Jake Dennis began the Attack Mode phase on lap five, beginning a series of moves as drivers armed the additional power boost.[2] Edoardo Mortara and Sims were the next to arm the boost, followed by Robin Frijns and Pascal Wehrlein on the next tour, while di Grassi held on last but proved unable to jump Cassidy for the lead with his effective over-cut.[2]
The only move to stick in the first AM exchange would be Frijns overtaking Vandoorne, although as the leaders began arming AM for the second time this would be reveresed again, with Vandoorne also going on to reclaim third from Buemi.[2] Vandoorne then caught up with di Grassi and managed to force a move with the aid of FanBoost, with Frijns also making ground with a lunge of his own to grab fourth from the #23 Nissan e.Dams of Buemi.[2]
Rain began to fall on the Brooklyn Circuit as the race entered the final ten minutes, with Cassidy suddenly finding himself on his own out front, while di Grassi lunge back past Vandoorne for second, a move that also allowed Frijns to pass the Belgian to claim third.[2] Behind, Mortara was on a late charge with a series of moves on Sam Bird, Wehrlein, Dennis, Nyck de Vries and Buemi to ascend to fifth, and was on course to catch Vandoorne as the rain began to thunder down on the second half of the circuit.[2]
So quickly did conditions deteriorate that with nine minutes to go the race was put under Full Course Yellow conditions, although that came too late for Cassidy, who hit a puddle entering turn six and flew off into the barriers.[2] di Grassi was next on the scene and had an identical accident, as did Vandoorne a second later, Mortara hit the same puddle and wiped the front wing off of his car, but crucially continued after managing to snake out of the escape road without joining the Cassidy pileup.[2] Buemi, meanwhile, would be unsighted and smashed into the back of Wehrlein, taking both cars out, with Wehrlein stopping at the exit of turn seven to cause a low-speed pile collision with Bird and Dennis.[2]
Frijns was the only driver of the lead group to make it through turn six without issue, with the race immediately red flagged due to the quintet of wrecked cars and the huge puddles that had developed around the circuit.[2] After ten minutes the officials decided that the race would not restart, with the results declared based on how the order had been at the end of lap 29, the penultimate lap before the stoppage.[2] Cassidy was hence declared as the winner ahead of di Grassi and Frijns, while Vandoorne secured fourth ahead of Mortara, although the Swiss racer was later penalised and relegated to eighth.[2][4]
Background[]
Two weeks after the hastily re-arranged round in Marrakesh, the 2021/22 ABB FIA Formula E Championship found itself in another familiar paddock, having gathered in the docks of Red Hook in Brooklyn, New York, for the elventh and twelfth races of the season.[1] Indeed, the field would find the Brooklyn Street Circuit, the host of the New York City E-Prix, unchanged for the 2022 visit, with the Attack Mode activation point remaining at the hairpin turn ten.[1]
Mortara's Machinations[]
Victory had pushed Edoardo Mortara into the lead of the Championship leaving Marrakesh, the Swiss ace having moved onto 139 points for the season after ten races and three victories. Jean-Éric Vergne had held onto second, but slipped eleven off the lead, while former leader Stoffel Vandoorne had effectively swapped places with Mortara, slipping to third and fourteen off the lead. Mitch Evans was just a point further back from the Beligan in fourth, with Robin Frijns in fifth some 43 point behind the New Zealander in fifth.
It was a similar story in the Teams' Championship, with ROKiT Venturi having moved up to the lead of the Championship at the expense of their supplier Mercedes. The Monegasque squad's rise from third to first had seen them move onto 205 points for the season, with Mercedes falling from first to third, seven off the lead with DS Techeetah, in second, two off the lead on 203. Those three then had a comfortable 43 point margin over Jaguar Racing in fourth, with Porsche completing the top five, a further 39 behind.

Qualifying[]
Qualifying for the 2022 New York City E-Prix I would be conducted according to the knockout format, introduced ahead of season eight.[6] The field would be split into two groups of eleven drivers, based on Championship position, with each group then getting ten minutes on track to complete as many laps as they wished at 220 kW.[6] The fastest eight overall would then proceed to the knockout phase, now running at the maximum 250 kW qualifying mode, with the fastest from group A against the fourth fastest from group B and so on, until four drivers were left.[6]
Those four would move on to the Semi-Final, with the winner of A1/B4 taking on the victor of A2/B3, while the triumphant driver of A3/B2 would take on A4/B1's winner.[6] The winners from those duels would then go into the final, with the winner of that duel taking pole, while the runner-up would start from second, before any grid penalties were applied.[6]

Milestones[]
- Maiden victory for Nick Cassidy.
- Envision Racing secured their twelfth victory as an entrant.
- Also their first victory since the 2019 Diriyah E-Prix I.
- Audi Sport earned their seveneeth win as a powertrain supplier.
Standings[]
The late-race penalty for Edoardo Mortara had made a fair impact on the Championship picture halfway through the trip to New York, with the Swiss racer's lead having been cut to five points in the first race. Indeed, Stoffel Vandoorne had done most of the damage, having moved onto 137 points for the season, while Jean-Éric Vergne and Mitch Evans had managed to lose ground in the rain, falling fourteen and eighteen points back respectively. Behind, Robin Frijns was within 50 points of the lead in fifth, but a very remote challenger for the title, while victory had moved Nick Cassidy into eleventh.
In the Teams' Championship ROKiT Venturi still held the Championship lead as Saturday's running came to a conclusion, their tally having grown to 226 points for the season. Their lead had also increased to twelve during the first New York race, with the factory Mercedes squad having moved back up to second on 214, while a pointless day for DS Techeetah saw them slip 23 off the lead in third. Jaguar Racing were next up in fourth, sat on 161 points, while Envision Racing had overtaken Porsche to complete the top five.
