The 2022 ABB Formula E New York City E-Prix II, otherwise known as the 2022 New York City E-Prix II, was the twelfth race of the 2021/22 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, staged at the Brooklyn Street Circuit in New York City, New York State, United States on 17 July 2022.[1] The race would be the tenth New York City E-Prix to be held as part of the FE Championship, and potentially the last after the city was missed off of the 2022/23 provisional calendar.[1]
Qualifying saw Saturday's race winner and pole sitter Nick Cassidy win the Final, although a 30 place grid penalty due to repairs resulting from his huge accident at the end of that race instead handed pole to António Félix da Costa.[2][3] The New Zealander would hence start from the back of the grid having beaten Stoffel Vandoorne and André Lotterer on his way to the final, while da Costa would see off challenges from Nyck de Vries and Alexander Sims on his run.[2]
The start of the race saw da Costa sweep away from pole to secure the lead, while Lotterer in third appeared to have an issue, the #36 Porsche not moving away before the German racer finally moved away as the field swarmed him.[4] Replays would subsequently show the German pilot crawling just before the lights went out before jumping on the brakes, although regardless the damage was done as Lotterer fell into the middle of the pack and out of contention.[4]
da Costa would hold a handsome lead during the opening laps, although hard work from Sims saw the #29 Mahindra work to draw the #13 DS Techeetah in, and with the rest of the lead group following him onto da Costa's tail.[4] Elsewhere, Dan Ticktum was brushing the edge of the top ten, Sam Bird was storming up into the points from sixteenth, while poleman Cassidy was at the very end of the field having also had to serve a drive-through penalty due to how much of his car had been repaired.[4]
Attack Mode, which was to be used once and last for eight minutes, would come into play on lap eleven, with de Vries and Sérgio Sette Câmara, then still running in the top ten, the first of the leaders to take the boost.[4] da Costa and Sims went next to hand the lead to Vandoorne, before returning to third ahead of de Vries, while Mitch Evans would jump de Vries, and have teammate Sam Bird backing him up, once the AM phase came to an end.[4]
Sims' challenge for victory would fade once AM was over, with the Brit ultimately unable to resist the attentions of Vandoorne when the Belgian pilot threw the #5 Mercedes down the inside of the Mahindra at turn six.[4] Evans then tried a move into turn ten but was instead mugged by de Vries, before those two began a scrap that would result in one of the saves of FE's history a lap later.[4]
Barrelling towards turn six, Evans jinked outside then inside of de Vries, with the #17 Mercedes moving across to block as they approached the braking zone, and barely leaving a car's width between his car and the inside wall.[4] Committed, Evans took the space but hit a bump, sending his car into a tank-slapped that saw him slide across the nose of de Vries, before ending up on the edge of the escape road at turn six, somehow without touching the barrier.[4] Evans duly rejoined without losing a position, but had lost three seconds in the endeavour which effectively ended his hopes of victory.[4]
Into the closing stages, however, and the #9 Jaguar was back with de Vries, with the Dutchman then hitting the same bump as the New Zealander while attacking Sims on lap 30, and duly lost out to Evans with his own broadside slide.[4] A lap later and de Vries would, worryingly, make the same mistake again, this time while trying to defend from Bird as the #10 Jaguar waited for the #17 Mercedes to skate out of the way to grab fifth from the defending Champion.[4]
Out front, meanwhile, da Costa was in control his only worry being a late Safety Car which would allow Vandoorne to close right onto his tail.[4] That almost happened with a couple of minutes to go as Lucas di Grassi was put into the wall by Jean-Éric Vergne at turn six-seven, with the resulting melee briefly blocking the circuit and seeing Oliver Askew wiped out from the race.[4]
With yellow flags covering Askew's car at turn six/seven the race was effectively over, with da Costa able to keep Vandoorne at bay to secure his first win of the campaign, a second ahead of the Belgian pilot who moved to the top of the Championship as a result.[4] Evans would steal third away from Sims late on to complete the podium, although the #29 Mahindra would secure its best finish of the season in fourth after resisting the attentions of Bird through to the chequered flag.[4] Robin Frijns was next up ahead of compatriot de Vries, Jake Dennis secured eighth ahead of the recovering Lotterer, while Edoardo Mortara secured the bonus point for fastest lap and the final point in tenth.[4]
Background[]
There would be no modifications to the Brooklyn Street Circuit after the opening battle of New York City on Saturday, with the weather also seemingly more settled and humid than the day before.[1] The entry list would also remain unchanged, with Envision Racing having completely replaced Nick Cassidy's car overnight, while Mercedes, ROKiT Venturi, Porsche and Nissan e.Dams had all managed to rebuild their damaged chargers from the huge accident that had ended the New York City E-Prix I prematurely amid heavy rain.[2] Furthermore, Dragon/Penske had completed their repairs to Sérgio Sette Câmara's car, with all drivers involved in accidents on Saturday having passed medical checks and were hence cleared to race on Sunday.[2]
Rain and Ruin[]
The late-race penalty for Edoardo Mortara had made a fair impact on the Championship picture halfway through the trip to New York, with the Swiss racer's lead having been cut to five points in the first race. Indeed, Stoffel Vandoorne had done most of the damage, having moved onto 137 points for the season, while Jean-Éric Vergne and Mitch Evans had managed to lose ground in the rain, falling fourteen and eighteen points back respectively. Behind, Robin Frijns was within 50 points of the lead in fifth, but a very remote challenger for the title, while victory had moved Nick Cassidy into eleventh.
In the Teams' Championship ROKiT Venturi still held the Championship lead as Saturday's running came to a conclusion, their tally having grown to 226 points for the season. Their lead had also increased to twelve during the first New York race, with the factory Mercedes squad having moved back up to second on 214, while a pointless day for DS Techeetah saw them slip 23 off the lead in third. Jaguar Racing were next up in fourth, sat on 161 points, while Envision Racing had overtaken Porsche to complete the top five.

Qualifying[]
Qualifying for the 2022 New York City E-Prix II would be conducted according to the knockout format, introduced ahead of season eight.[6] The field would be split into two groups of eleven drivers, based on Championship position, with each group then getting ten minutes on track to complete as many laps as they wished at 220 kW.[6] The fastest eight overall would then proceed to the knockout phase, now running at the maximum 250 kW qualifying mode, with the fastest from group A against the fourth fastest from group B and so on, until four drivers were left.[6]
Those four would move on to the Semi-Final, with the winner of A1/B4 taking on the victor of A2/B3, while the triumphant driver of A3/B2 would take on A4/B1's winner.[6] The winners from those duels would then go into the final, with the winner of that duel taking pole, while the runner-up would start from second, before any grid penalties were applied.[6]

Milestones[]
- Tenth New York City E-Prix to be staged.
- António Félix da Costa secured his seventh career victory.
- Techeetah claimed their fourteenth win as an entrant.
- DS won their fourteenth race.
Standings[]
Second place would move Stoffel Vandoorne to the top of the Championship as the trip to New York City came to a conclusion, the Belgian pilot having increased his tally to 155 points with four races to go. Edoardo Mortara, former leader, had slipped eleven off the lead in second after a difficult weekend, while Mitch Evans had moved up to third, and just five behind the Swiss pilot. Jean-Éric Vergne had lost ground in fourth after a double non-score, his first pointless weekend of the season, while Robin Frijns and António Félix da Costa had both moved past the 100 point mark in fifth and sixth, but were effectively out of the title fight.
In the Teams' Championship the season-long game of leap-frog between Mercedes and their customers ROKiT Venturi had continued in New York, with the German marque ending the weekend ten points ahead of the Monegasques at the head of the hunt. Venturi themselves occupied second, but found that their 228 point tally was the same as third placed DS Techeetah, only their tally of three wins to the Sino-French squad's one keeping them ahead on count-back. Jaguar Racing, meanwhile, were in a lonely fourth ahead of Envision Racing, while Dragon/Penske were still the only pointless team in the field at the foot of the table.
