Post-Race Test

The 2023 London E-Prix I, officially advertised as the 2023 Hankook London E-Prix I, was the fifteenth and penultimate race of the 2022/23 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, staged at the ExCeL E-Prix Circuit in the ExCeL Exhibition Centre, Newham, London, United Kingdom, on 29 July 2023.[1][2] The race would see four drivers and four teams arrive still in the mathematical hunt for the Drivers and Teams Championships respectively, although Jake Dennis would start the weekend with a 24 point lead in the former.[2]

Qualifying for the season finale would see all four of the title pretenders make it to the knockout stages, although it was Mitch Evans who ultimately emerged with the bonus points for pole position after defeating Nick Cassidy in the Final by just 0.026s.[3] En-route to the Final Evans had swept aside Stoffel Vandoorne before beating Dennis by almost four tenths of a second, while Cassidy had knocked out fourth pretender Pascal Wehrlein and then eased to victory against teammate Sébastien Buemi.[3]

With Evans serving a five place grid penalty held over from the 2023 Rome E-Prix II it was Cassidy who would get the race underway from pole position, with teammate Buemi storming up from third to snatch second from Dennis, securing an Envision Racing one-two.[4] Dennis himself was content to hold third and stay out of trouble, with Dan Ticktum and René Rast fighting it out behind him, while Evans and Wehrlein held onto sixth and seventh respectively and would fight amongst themselves for the opening couple of laps.[4]

Evans was the first to make early progress, vaulting past Ticktum on lap two to grab fifth, while Wehrlein had to complete a couple more tours of the ExCeL before he too scythed past the #33 NIO for sixth, moments before Evans' teammate Sam Bird appeared in his mirrors.[4] Out front, meanwhile, Envision's plan was coming to fruition with Buemi backing up the field enough that Cassidy could take both of his Attack Mode activations early on without dropping into the pack, although shortly after taking his second helping of AM Cassidy would hand the lead to Buemi.[4]

That proved not to be the wisest move, for Evans would also barge past the #37 Envision to claim second, having shuffled up to third after Rast armed his first AM boost and Dennis shockingly missed the sensors when attempting to arm it himself.[4] Evans then took the lead as Buemi armed his AM boost on lap nine, before Dennis pulled out a stunning move to lunge past Cassidy for third into the final corner, only for both to be mugged by Rast on the exit with the #58 McLaren leaping to third.[4]

Evans escaped up the road over the following laps, aided by Rast charging past Buemi for second, prompting the Swiss pilot to back Dennis back into the sights fo Cassidy, who duly took the opportunity to lunge back ahead of the #27 Andretti for fourth.[4] However, just two laps later and Cassidy's title bid was over, for a misjudged move amid miscommunication from the Envision team saw the New Zealander take off his own front wing on the back of Buemi's car, forcing him into the pits and out of contention for victory.[4]

A Safety Car was thrown in the wake of that collision, debris having been left scattered across the ExCeL, with the race resuming after a two-lap intervention.[4] Evans duly charged away to reclaim the lead at the restart ahead of Buemi, Rast and a now fourth placed Wehrlein, while Dennis managed to miss AM for a second time but held on to fifth as Bird had taken AM at the same time.[4]

The order would chop and change a fair amount over the following laps, with Dennis getting furious with the antics of Wehrlein in the sister-Porsche as the German racer, who was mathematically out of the hunt as things stood, fighting Dennis rather than helping him move up.[4] However, the race would be put on pause with eight laps to go, as Sacha Fenestraz slammed hard into the barriers at turn sixteen after getting flicked into the air after contact with Sérgio Sette Câmara heading into the hairpin.[4]

Almost half an hour would pass before the race resumed again, and with four laps to go Evans made another bolt for victory with Buemi in tow, followed by António Félix da Costa up a huge fourteen places from his starting spot, and Wehrlein at the back due to damage on his car.[4] With AM still required to be taken by several contenders at the front there would be more drama, with Buemi having to take six minutes of AM and duly deciding to drive as slowly as possible to make sure he used it before the chequered flag, triggering a second red flag.[4]

Indeed, with Buemi running almost ten seconds off the pace in fourth, having been mugged by da Costa and Dennis, the Swiss racer would fight with Norman Nato into the pentultimate corner with three laps to go, and the resulting contact between them and Bird resulted in the track getting blocked and a further 20 minute delay.[4] That left three laps when the race resumed, although with no energy concerns for the field the final three tours were a quick sprint which saw no on-track changes to the order.[4]

As a result it was Evans who claimed victory on the day but it was Dennis who won the war, third on the road enough to ensure that the Brit had too many points in hand to be overhauled in the Championship standings with one race to go.[4] He was subsequently elevated to second after da Costa was slapped with a three minute time penalty after Porsche failed to repair an issue on his car during the red flag period, which hence saw Buemi promoted to third ahead of Bird, Sette Câmara, Edoardo Mortara, Lucas di Grassi, Ticktum, Nato and Wehrlein.[4] Further penalties then saw Sette Câmara disqualified from the race to elevate Jake Hughes into the points and claim fastest lap, while Porsche revealed that they would be appealing da Costa's penalty meaning the results remain provisional as of 5 August 2023.[4][5]

Background[]

Two weeks after the two part battle of Rome the 2022/23 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship arrived in London, United Kingdom, for the final pair of races to conclude the ninth FE campaign.[2] Unloading once again in the ExCeL Exhibition Centre in Newham, the field would find a tweaked ExCeL E-Prix Circuit for them to race around, which was to see the 2022/23 FE Champion crowned either via Saturday's race or as a result of the battle on Sunday.[2] The field was expected to be unchanged, with teams set to get repaired or even new spare monocoques for their squads after the particularly brutal Rome weekend that had seen at least five cars receive terminal damage.[6]

Energy Savings[]

Ahead of the trip to London it was revealed that the races in the British capital would be conducted with the lowest ever available energy, with the FIA and FE limiting all 22 cars to just 27 kWh for each race, down some 14 kWh from the Generation 3 ruleset's original 41 kWh spec.[7] The change came due to the nature of the ExCeL circuit, which had also prompted a reduced energy reduction during the Series' 2022 visit, as the tight layout and lack of long straights and flowing corners meant that energy consumption was not as much of an issue as at other circuits.[7] It was hoped by the Series organisers that it would prompt the final two races of the season to resemble the mid-season run of E-Prix, where peleton-esque races had been conducted by the field and had resulted in FE breaking its record for most overtakes on multiple occassions.[7]

Sector Surgery[]

To further create some energy jeopardy, and hope to increase the amount of on track action, the final sector of the ExCeL circuit was modified, although this was also in part due to an extension being built onto the back part of the ExCeL itself that meant that the original third sector layout was unusable.[8] The change would see the hairpin of turn sixteen followed by a left-hand kink and short straight, before a 90° left of turn seventeen that was then followed by a sweeping right of turn eighteen that carried the field back onto the original layout.[8] The change removed two corners from the equation and reduced the circuit length to 2.086 km, while the bus stop-esque chicane on the opposite side of the circuit was slightly tweaked to allow more run-off and a distinct route to rejoin the circuit if a driver ran wide.[8]

A Beta Record[]

Ahead of the season finale Formula E would also make a Guiness World Record attempt, with Jake Hughes and Lucas di Grassi chosen to pilot a modified version of the Generation 3 car, dubbed "GENBETA", in a bid to set a new record for the highest speed achieved indoors.[9] Ultimately it was Hughes who took the record at the wheel of GENBETA, which had an extra 50 kW of deployable energy courtesy of activating the front powertrain to deploy as well as harvest energy as well as softer specifications of Hankook's iON tyres and slightly remolded bodywork, with the Brit setting a new marker of 218.71 km/h on his official run.[9] That was more than 50 km/h faster than the old record, which had been set in 2021, while di Grassi set a best effort of 218.18 km/h to just fall shy of the Brit, on a run which saw the drivers start their run with a 130° curve before darting down a 346 metre straight down the middle of the ExCeL.[9]

Dennis' Dart[]

It may well have been a decisive day in Rome in terms of the Championship after the second battle of Rome concluded, for Jake Dennis would leave the Italian capital with a handsome 24 point lead at the head of the hunt, with 58 left to play for in London. That meant the Brit could win the title in the first race in London, only needing to out-score Nick Cassidy by six points, with the New Zealander realistically the only man who could deny Dennis a maiden FE crown. Behind, Mitch Evans was 44 off the lead in third and would need a dramatic shift in London to secure his first FE crown, while Pascal Wehrlein, Championship leader for almost half the season, had remained within mathematical contention, but would require a miracle if he was to overcome his 49 point deficit to Dennis.

The Teams' Championship, meanwhile, had not been decided in Rome, with a four-way fight guaranteed to at least last into the first race in London as just 35 points covered the top four, and a maximum haul of 94 points awaited any team that could pull off a perfect weekend. Envision Racing would head to their home races as the leaders on 253 points, but their advantage over second placed Porsche was just fourteen after the double-header in Rome, while their suppliers Jaguar Racing were only a further eleven behind in third. Avalanche Andretti, Porsche's customers, were the fourth squad in the hunt and were only ten off of the factory Jaguar effort, with DS Penske now officially out of the fight and instead aimed to hold fifth from their customers/sister squad Maserati at the finale.

Qualifying[]

Qualifying for the 2023 London E-Prix I would be conducted according to the knockout format, introduced ahead of season eight.[11] The field would be split into two groups of eleven drivers, based on Championship position, with each group then getting ten minutes on track to complete as many laps as they wished at 300 kW.[11] The fastest eight overall would then proceed to the knockout phase, now running at the maximum 350 kW qualifying mode, with the fastest from group A against the fourth fastest from group A and so on, until four drivers were left.[11]

Those four would move on to the Semi-Final, with the winner of A1/A4 taking on the victor of A2/A3, while the triumphant driver of B3/B2 would take on B4/B1's winner.[11] The winners from those duels would then go into the final, with the winner of that duel taking pole, while the runner-up would start from second, before any grid penalties were applied.[11]

Milestones[]

Standings[]

A podium finish combined with Nick Cassidy failing to score ensured that Jake Dennis had enough points in hand to claim the Championship with a race to spare, the Brit's tally having reached an unassailable 213 points. Victory and pole position, meanwhile, had pushed Mitch Evans up to second, with the New Zealander set to duel with compatriot Cassidy for the runner-up spot on the final day with just eight points between them. Pascal Wehrlein was now a distant fourth and set to finish there, while Jean-Éric Vergne rounded out the top five with Maximilian Günther looking to overhaul the Frenchman on Sunday.

In contrast the Teams' Championship would be going to the final day, with four teams still in contention, although in truth it was likely to be a straight out duel between Jaguar Racing and their customers Envision Racing. Indeed, the British manufacturer and their Anglo-Chinese clients would head into the finale level on 268 points, with the manufacturer squad deemed ahead due to holding four victories to Envision's three. Behind Avalanche Andretti were still in the hunt in third, as were their suppliers Porsche, although with those two trailing by 27 and 32 points respectively they would instead be in their own fight for third unless the Jaguar and Envision teams both imploded.
