The 2023 Portland E-Prix, otherwise officially known as the 2023 Southwire Portland E-Prix, was the twelfth race of the 2022/23 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, staged at the Portland International Raceway in Portland, Oregon, USA on 24 June 2023.[2][1] The race would be the first to be held at the purpose built Portland circuit, host of the IndyCar Series and the Grand Prix of Portland, after being added to the Season Nine calendar as the last "TBC" round to be filled.[2]
After a record breaking practice session, which had seen Edoardo Mortara complete the first ever FE lap at an average speed of over 100 mph, Jake Dennis would emerge from qualifying in pole position after defeating Sacha Fenestraz in the final.[3] En-route to the final, which would also hand the Brit the Championship lead, Dennis would fend off challenges from the two McLarens of Jake Hughes and René Rast, while Fenestraz took on Maximilian Günther and then teammate Norman Nato before falling 0.079s shy of Dennis in the Final duel.[3]
The start of the race saw Dennis convert pole into a realtively easy lead, with Fenestraz quickly tucking in behind for second in what was expected to be a race in which no-one wanted to lead.[4] The rest of the field would squeeze through the first chicane without issue, the two McLarens almost managing to sneak past the factory run sister cars of Nissan, while at the back Dan Ticktum ascended from fifteenth to tenth over the course of the opening tour.[4]
As predicted the race quickly became one resembling a stage of the Tour de France rather than a conventional motor-race, with Dennis backing off early to try and relinquish the lead as early as lap three.[4] Nick Cassidy would briefly supplant him before the New Zealander opted to take his first Attack Mode bosst, the first driver in the field to do so, while Dennis himself survived a tap from Fenestraz that instead sent the #23 Nissan into the pitlane for a new nose, before the Safety Car was scrambled to retrieve a stranded Roberto Merhi.[4]
Lap eight and the race resumed, with all of the lead drivers bar Mortara immediately diving to take AM for the first time, with Cassidy joining them as he armed his second boost.[4] In that fray it was Nato who would lead from António Félix da Costa, Günther and Lucas di Grassi, only for Cassidy to come storming back to the front with his AM boost, before a heavy accident for Nico Müller brought the SC out for a second time.[4]
Müller's heavy accident, caused by a broken front wing, would take seven laps to clear, and the restart on lap seventeen saw Nato hit the front after Cassidy opted not to defend into the first corner.[4] Immediately the race became a peleton once again, just three seconds covering the entire field, with Pascal Wehrlein one of a number of drivers to get caught out in the huge concertinas that were happening into every corner, causing him front wing damage and dumping him out of the top ten.[4]
With six of the original 28 laps left on the board the shape of the race began to change, with António Félix da Costa hitting the front and setting a more respectable pace, instantly building a one second lead over a now second placed Cassidy.[4] Indeed, those two would soon charge away from the pack with Dennis in tow, while behind the two Jaguars of Sam Bird and Mitch Evans were carving their way up the order, despite both starting in the botton quarter of the grid.[4]
Into the closing stages, and four additional laps, and it was a three-way fight for the lead, with Cassidy, Dennis and da Costa all exchanging blows lap after lap, corner after corner.[4] Yet, Cassidy would make the ultimately decisive move for victory on lap 30, scything past da Costa into the first corner, before placing his car well through the following laps to deny both da Costa and Dennis any chance of making an easy move.[4]
Cassidy duly ran on to claim his third victory of the campaign, while the scrap between da Costa and Dennis would last through until the midway point of the final tour, Dennis eventually elbowing his way past to snatch second ahead of the Portuguese ace.[4] Evans claimed fastest lap and fourth place just ahead of Sébastien Buemi, while Günther survived a clash with Bird to grab sixth ahead of the Brit, who was subsequently penalised for the incident and dumped out of the points.[4] Lucas di Grassi was hence classified in seventh ahead of Wehrlein and Nato, while Robin Frijns rounded out the scorers in a race that officially had a record 403 overtakes.[4]
Background[]
Three weeks after Formula E completed its double header in Jakarta, the class of 2022/23 would head to the otherside of the Pacific ocean for a trip to a familiar country but an unfamiliar venue.[2] Indeed, after trips to Long Beach, Miami and, most frequently, New York, FE would break new ground on 24 June 2023 by visiting the Portland International Raceway in Portland, Oregan, USA, for the first time, a trip which would also mark the first E-Prix to be held on a purpose built circuit since the season opener in Mexico.[2] Furthermore, the circuit would not be modified for FE's visit, meaning the Series would be using the exact same layout as used by the IndyCar Series for the Grand Prix of Portland.[2]
Portland Push[]
The addition of Portland to the 2022/23 tour was confirmed in December 2022, as Formula E and the FIA completed negotiations on locations to complete the Season Nine calendar.[2]
Generation IV[]
Ahead of the Portland E-Prix the tender for Generation 4, the working name for the fourth generation of FE's base car, was released and included an initial specification for the Generation 3 car's successor.[5] Set to debut in 2026/27, the new car would have a maximum power output of 600 kW (double Gen 3's initial power and with front deployment), increased weight of 76 kg to accomodate a larger battery, a wider 100 mm footprint, 100 kW increase in energy regen, and two aero configurations.[5] The tender was hence split into three parts, with separate tenders for the chassis (including a new requirement for an enlarged front section), battery and tyres, with the tender remaining open until 31 August 2023 and the winning bids to be announced on 19 October.[5]
Jakarta Jump[]
It was all change atop the Drivers' Championship as the Series' trip to Jakarta came to a conclusion, with Pascal Wehrlein having restored his status as Championship leader after two strong races, although his advantage was not as it had been earlier during the campaign. Indeed, the German ace would leave Jakarta just a single point clear of closest challenger Jake Dennis, while Nick Cassidy, who had led the Championship on Sunday morning, was just six behind after falling to third. Behind, Mitch Evans was within striking distance in fourth after breaking slightly clear of fifth placed Jean-Éric Vergne, while Maximilian Günther had leapt into the top ten with his first win of the campaign.
In contrast it was status quo atop the Teams' Championship, with Porsche having extended their lead over Envision Racing at the head of the field to 22 points courtesy of their strongest weekend since the trip to Diriyah. Envision themselves were still a relatively comfortable second, but had seen their advantage over suppliers Jaguar Racing to nineteen points, while Avalanche Andretti were catching both Jaguar powered teams in fourth. DS Penske, meanwhile, had held fifth with their sister team Maserati backing them in sixth, while the two Mahindra equipped teams had remained at the foot of the table.

Qualifying[]
Qualifying for the 2023 Portland E-Prix would be conducted according to the knockout format, introduced ahead of season eight.[7] The field would be split into two groups of eleven drivers, based on Championship position, with each group then getting ten minutes on track to complete as many laps as they wished at 300 kW.[7] The fastest eight overall would then proceed to the knockout phase, now running at the maximum 350 kW qualifying mode, with the fastest from group A against the fourth fastest from group A and so on, until four drivers were left.[7]
Those four would move on to the Semi-Final, with the winner of A1/A4 taking on the victor of A2/A3, while the triumphant driver of B3/B2 would take on B4/B1's winner.[7] The winners from those duels would then go into the final, with the winner of that duel taking pole, while the runner-up would start from second, before any grid penalties were applied.[7]

- * Bird was awarded a five second time penalty for causing a collision with Günther.[11]
Milestones[]
- First Portland E-Prix to be staged.
- Fourth career victory for Nick Cassidy.
- Envision Racing earned their fifteenth victory as an entrant.
- Jaguar claimed their thirteenth win as a powertrain supplier.
- Jake Dennis matched the record for most podium finishes in a season (8).
Standings[]
There had been another shuffle atop the Championship as the final non-European race of the campaign concluded, with Jake Dennis now heading the Championship for the first time since the 2023 Diriyah E-Prix I. The Brit's lead was a tiny one however, with Portland winner Nick Cassidy sat just a single point behind the Brit, while former leader Pascal Wehrlein was still a major threat in third, despite falling sixteen points behind. Mitch Evans, meanwhile, had produced an excellent recovery drive to keep his title hopes alive and remain the dark horse for the title, albeit now 32 points off the lead, while Jean-Éric Vergne was falling out of contention in fifth after slipping 57 points behind with 116 left to fight for in Rome and London.
The Teams' Championship had also tightened up ahead of the season's final quartet of races, with Porsche still leading but with a greatly reduced margin. Indeed, their lead was just six points with four races to go, Envision Racing their closest challengers, while Jaguar Racing were an increasingly distant third, but still had some realistic title ambitions as they sat 47 off the lead. Avalanche Andretti were also outside contenders in fourth, making it two Porsche squads versus two Jaguar teams for the title, while DS Penske had lost ground in fifth and were slipping away from the title hunt.
