Post-Race Test

The 2023 São Paulo E-Prix, officially known as the 2023 Julius Bär São Paulo E-Prix, was the sixth round of the 2022/23 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, staged at the São Paulo Street Circuit around the Anhembi Sambadrome in São Paulo, Brazil, on 25 March 2023.[1][2] The race would be the first E-Prix to be held in both Brazil and the Brazilian city, after multiple attempts and plans to stage a race in São Paulo had tried and failed since the inaugural 2014/15 FE campaign.[2]

Qualifying for the first ever battle of São Paulo would see Stoffel Vandoorne sweep to his first pole position of the campaign, defeating António Félix da Costa in the final by 0.063s, all established in the final sector of the duel.[3] Vandoorne would defeat Jake Hughes and then Edoardo Mortara on his run to what was the Penske team's first pole position since the 2016 Mexico City ePrix, while da Costa's first duels appearance of the campaign saw him take on and win against Maximilian Günther and Mitch Evans.[3]

A strong start for Vandoorne saw the Belgian pilot convert pole into an early lead, while da Costa managed to keep an aggressive Evans at bay despite the New Zealander's lunge around the outside of the first corner.[4] Behind there would be something of a crunch through the first trio of corners, with Norman Nato getting flicked into the air after striking the back of René Rast, while Mortara ended up with front wing damage after contact with the other McLaren and had to pit for repairs.[4]

It proved to be an eventful opening to the inauguaral São Paulo E-Prix, as Sébastien Buemi was knocked to the back of the field during the pack's second visit to the first chicane, contact with Günther causing bruising to his hand.[4] Elsewhere, Pascal Wehrlein surged from eighteenth to the tail of title rival Jake Dennis in eleventh, and would soon find himself firing past the #27 Avalanche Andretti and then Nico Müller to break into the top ten.[4]

The race briefly settled for the leaders, although an early energy check revealed that fears that leading the pack was a major issue, for in the space of five laps Vandoorne would find himself 1% down on energy compared to his chasers.[4] That prompted the Belgian pilot, along with teammate Jean-Éric Vergne and Sam Bird to go for Attack Mode first and drop back into the pack, although a lap later and the #1 DS Penske was back in the lead having scythed past da Costa into the first corner.[4]

Evans and Cassidy would also slip past the #13 Porsche, before the Safety Car had to be scrambled in order to recover Sacha Fenestraz from the circuit after the #23 Nissan had taken too much damage in the opening laps.[4] A three lap pause and the race resumed, Vandoorne bolting at the end of lap twelve to re-establish the lead, but with an energy deficit of almost 3% as a result.[4]

da Costa and Cassidy stole the show after the restart, the Portuguese racer initially surging past both Cassidy and Evans to reclaim second, with Cassidy also sneaking ahead of the factory Jaguar to re-secure third.[4] Not content with that Cassidy moved up to challenge da Costa and Vandoorne, pulling off a double move into the first corner in order to claim the lead, Vandoorne not challenging, before the race was halted by another SC appearance, this time due to the actions of Dan Ticktum who had taken Dennis out of the race with a swipe at turn three.[4]

Lap nineteen and the race resumed, with Cassidy and Vandoorne immediately jumping to arm AM, while da Costa and Evans followed a lap later to leave the order as Cassidy-da Costa-Evans-Vandoorne at the head of the field.[4] da Costa's hopes of victory were then ruined by a rare mistake, the Portuguese ace locking up at the first chicane to drop back to seventh just ahead of teammate Wehrlein, while Vandoorne soon found himself dropping back into the sights of teammate Vergne and a charging Bird, who had a huge energy advantage compared to the rest of the lead group.[4]

Four laps were added to the race distance as a result of the SC periods, and as the race entered the extra quartet of laps all eyes were on Bird, as the Brit broke free of the two DS Penske's and began to hunt down the sister cars of Evans and Cassidy ahead.[4] In the mean-time the race lead was swapped again, Evans firing past Cassidy on lap 32 as his teammate came storming up to his tail, and with two laps to go it was three Jaguar powertrains for the lead, while da Costa and Wehrlein scrapped with the two DS Penskes over fourth.[4]

Ultimately, however, Bird would not force the issue particularly hard despite his energy advantage, meaning it was Cassidy who went on the offensive on the final tour, twice forcing Evans to defend before sending a lunge around the outside of the penultimate corner.[4] That failed and the #37 Envision pilot had to settle for second, sandwiched between Evans and Bird, the former sweeping to his first win of the season as Jaguar secured a podium lock-out, only the second time in FE history that feat had been achieved.[4] Behind da Costa fired past Vergne and Vandoorne late on to claim fourth, Wehrlein unable to follow his teammate through and settling for seventh, Hughes led teammate Rast across the line for eighth and ninth, while Buemi battled back up from the back of the field to tenth, having run out of time to move further up the order.[4]

Background[]

Four weeks would pass before the 2022/23 Formula E field would reunite again, with a third new venue and host city to the series making its E-Prix debut setting the stage for the reunion.[2] For round six FE would base itself around the Anhembi Sambadrome in São Paulo, Brazil, for the inaugural São Paulo E-Prix, which had been touted as a round of the FE Championship as early as the first drafts of the calendar for the first ever FE campaign in 2014/15.[2][5] Regardless, 2023 would finally see the Brazilian city make its FE bow, much to the delight of home hero Lucas di Grassi, with FE using a heavily revised version of the São Paulo Street Circuit, which had last been used to host the IndyCar Series in 2013.[2]

Indy-pendent Ideas[]

The modified São Paulo Street Circuit was unveiled a month before the race and would run straight through the Sambadrome as the IndyCar circuit had, although that would be where the similarities effectively ended.[6] An artificial chicane would serve as the first complex of the circuit, followed by another chicane at the end of the Sambadrome, before the field turned away from the Sambadrome via a hairpin.[6] A long straight followed before a second artificial chicane formed the next complex, followed by another long run into a pair of right-handers at the end of the second sector.[6] The field would then head back towards the Sambadrome, with a shallow left-hand kink carrying the cars into the final two corners, a left-right combo to return to the start/finish straight.[6]

In the build-up to the race weekend the first chicane was removed, reducing the circuit to eleven turns and 2.933 km in distance, although it did in-turn create one of the longest straights in the FE history.[6]

Cape Control[]

With the two main pretenders having failed to score in Cape Town it was status quo in the Championship hunt as FE left the Cape of Good Hope, with Pascal Wehrlein having retained his eighteen point lead at the head of the field. Likewise, Jake Dennis had held on to second place, although the gap between himself and third placed Jean-Éric Vergne had been cut to twelve points after the Frenchman's second place finish. António Félix da Costa had also made a step up the order after his first win of the campaign, jumping to fourth just four behind Vergne, while Nick Cassidy had ascended to fifth ahead of teammate Sébastien Buemi.

In the Teams' Championship it was still seemingly the Porsche Formula E Team's Championship to loose, the German marque's factory squad having extended their advantage over the rest of the field to 42 points with da Costa's first triumph for the team. However, the Porsche duopoly at the head of the hunt had been broken, for Envision Racing had sneaked ahead of Porsche's customers Avalanche Andretti to secure second, four ahead of the American squad. Behind, McLaren had held fourth after a double points score, DS Penske were up to fifth ahead of the factory Jaguar Racing team, while ABT Cupra had remained pointless having had to withdraw from the Cape Town round.

Qualifying[]

Qualifying for the 2023 São Paulo E-Prix would be conducted according to the knockout format, introduced ahead of season eight.[8] The field would be split into two groups of eleven drivers, based on Championship position, with each group then getting ten minutes on track to complete as many laps as they wished at 300 kW.[8] The fastest eight overall would then proceed to the knockout phase, now running at the maximum 350 kW qualifying mode, with the fastest from group A against the fourth fastest from group A and so on, until four drivers were left.[8]

Those four would move on to the Semi-Final, with the winner of A1/A4 taking on the victor of A2/A3, while the triumphant driver of B3/B2 would take on B4/B1's winner.[8] The winners from those duels would then go into the final, with the winner of that duel taking pole, while the runner-up would start from second, before any grid penalties were applied.[8]

Milestones[]

Standings[]

Pascal Wehrlein had managed to extend his Championship lead after battling through the field in São Paulo, the German pilot heading to his home race in Berlin with a 24 point advantage at the head of the field. Jake Dennis remained Wehrlein's closest challenger, although his third non-score in three races meant that he had now been caught by the chasing pack, Nick Cassidy having jumped to third and within a point of the Brit. Jean-Éric Vergne was just a further point behind in fourth, and only two ahead himself of António Félix da Costa, while four drivers would leave São Paulo without points to their name.

In the Teams' Championship Porsche contionued to head the charge, their tally having grown to 144 points, although their lead had been reduced by a single point to 31 points. Envision Racing had held their status in second place as they broke through the 100 point mark, while their sister squad and suppliers, the factory Jaguar Racing team, were up to third, sat on 83 points after their double podium. DS Penske had slipped a point behind the British marque in fourth, Avalanche Andretti had tumbled to fifth after a non-socre, two further points back, while ABT Cupra remained as the only pointless team at the foot of the table.
