Post-Race Test

The 2024/25 São Paulo E-Prix, officially the 2024 ABB Formula E São Paulo E-Prix, was the opening round of the 2024/25 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, staged at the São Paulo Street Circuit at the Anhembi Sambadrome, São Paulo, Brazil, on 7 December 2024.[1] The race, which was the debut for the new-for-season 11 Gen 3 Evo base car, would see Mitch Evans claim victory from last in the grid, as revised rules around Attack Mode, the use of All-Wheel-Drive, and two red flags created one of the most dramatic races in FE history.[2]

A busy off-season had been focused on final development and refinement of the new Gen 3 Evo cars by FE's six manufacturers, with Lola Cars and Yamaha having partnered with ABT Sportsline to form a new manufacturer entry, and Electric Racing Technologies having withdrawn from the series.[3] The ERT Formula E Team would subsequently be sold to an American investment group, who renamed the team Kiro Race Co., partnered with Cupra as a title sponsor, and would sign a deal to use Porsche's title winning 99X Electric Gen 3 package.[4]

Elsewhere, meanwhile, there would be no changes at the top of the series, with Porsche and 2023/24 rivals Jaguar entering the season as the outright favourites and both with unchanged driver line-ups in their factory teams.[5][6] Pascal Wehrlein would open the season as the reigning Champion and with a strong showing at the 2024 Jarama Test, although it was Evans who would hold the bragging rights from testing, having set the fastest outright time of the test.[7]

Qualifying for the opening round would see Wehrlein show his talents, sweeping to pole for the second time in São Paulo in nine months after fending off the challenge of Oliver Rowland in the final duel by just under a tenth of a second.[8] Wehrlein's path to the final had been a clam one, the German pilot having topped Group B before removing Norman Nato and Maximilian Günther in the knockouts, while Rowland had defeated António Félix da Costa and then 2022/23 Champion Jake Dennis in a customer Andretti run Porsche in the semi final by just 0.001s.[8]

A failure for Robin Frijns would breifly delay the start after the field lined-up on the grid, before the first ever completely AWD FE start got underway, with Rowland charging past Wehrlein to snatch the lead, while Günther elbowed past Dennis to secure third.[2] Elsewhere it was a fairly clean start with no major incidents, although the two McLarens and Norman Nato were all quickly placed under investigation for powerspikes off the grid.[2]

The first major incident of season eleven came midway through the second lap, as Jake Hughes and Nico Müller ended up tangled in the barrier at the chicane, having both been tapped by other drivers, most notably Beckmann who nudged Hughes into the #51 Andretti.[2] A Safety Car was required to remove the shattered cars from the circuit, before the race resumed on lap seven with Rowland sprinting clear from Wehrlein.[2]

With that Attack Mode came online, with Nick Cassidy showing just how potent the new formula of AWD and softer tyres combined with the extra 50kW of power made the cars, stroming up from the back of the top ten all the way to the lead of the race.[2] Seeing this, there was a rush to take AM for the first time and a flurry of position swings, with Wehrlein and da Costa falling out of the top ten, only to come all the way back to the head of the field, before Rowland used his second boost to get between the two Porsches and then snatch the lead, aiming to sprint clear.[2]

That was curtailed by the first red flag of the day, caused by a battery failure for Dennis who stopped on track and needed his car to be deactiviated by the marshals before he could get out and the car safely retrieved.[2] That red flag came midway through several drivers' second uses of AM, meaning they effectively lost that advantage, while several drivers, notably Cassidy, Evans, Taylor Barnard and Sam Bird all still had a second activation left.[2]

At the restart Rowland would again power into the lead from second on the grid, although just like had happened to the sister McLaren-Nissans and teammate Nato, the #23 Nissan would be slapped with a drive-through penalty for a powerspike off the line.[2] That removed him from contention as Cassidy armed his second AM boost, expertly surgining into the lead with Evans in tow, the #9 Jaguar ultimately taking the lead despite starting last on the grid at the original start.[2]

Six laps to go, four having been added due to the SC period and red flag, and Evans led da Costa, Cassidy, Günther and Wehrlein, while the two McLarens had swept up the field to be potential contenders for victory, with energy now the main play rather than AM.[2] However, as they went three wide into the chicane Cassidy would tap Günther into the wall at turn five, before he and Wehrlein made contact at turn six as the New Zealander picked up suspension damage, an impact that flipped Wehrlein over and agains tthe barriers.[2]

Red flag number two was flown as a result, although after 20 minutes Wehrlein was safely removed from his car and taken to hospital for precautionary checks.[2] That pause setup a five lap sprint to victory, with Evans and da Costa at the head of the field, but with an energy deficit to Barnard, who had some 3% more battery in hand for the final element of the race, and with teammate Bird more than prepared to act as a rear-gunner.[2]

Yet, it was not to be for the young Brit, as Evans expertly fended off the attentions of da Costa to sweep to an opening day victory, while da Costa himself collected fastest lap.[2] Barnard never managed to fully challenge the duo but did secure third, becoming the series' youngest ever podium finisher ahead of teammate Bird, while Edoardo Mortara used a clever strategy to claim fifth ahead of Nato, although a penalty demoted the #17 Nissan back out of the points.[2] Sixth instead when to Nyck de Vries ahead of Sébastien Buemi and Dan Ticktum, while Jean-Éric Vergne and Stoffel Vandoorne rounded out the scorers.[2]

Qualifying[]

Qualifying for the 2024/25 São Paulo E-Prix would be conducted according to the knockout format, introduced ahead of season eight.[10] The field would be split into two groups of eleven drivers, based on Championship position, with each group then getting ten minutes on track to complete as many laps as they wished at 300 kW.[10] The fastest eight overall would then proceed to the knockout phase, now running at the maximum 350 kW qualifying mode and with AWD active, with the fastest from group A against the fourth fastest from group A and so on, until four drivers were left.[10]

Those four would move on to the Semi-Final, with the winner of A1/A4 taking on the victor of A2/A3, while the triumphant driver of B3/B2 would take on B4/B1's winner.[10] The winners from those duels would then go into the final, with the winner of that duel taking pole ahead of the runner-up, with any grid penalties applied after the conclusion of the final.[10]

Standings[]

Victory for Mitch Evans had left the New Zealander at the head of the Championship hunt after the opening bout of the season, although his lead was just six points after António Félix da Costa had been awarded the bonus point for fastest lap. Taylor Barnard was next up ahead of teammate Sam Bird, Edoardo Mortara headed his teammate Nyck de Vries, Sébastien Buemi and Dan Ticktum, while pole position points meant Pascal Wehrlein opened his title defence in ninth. Jean-Éric Vergne and Stoffel Vandoorne rounded out the scorers.

In the Teams' Championship the late fortune had ensured that NEOM McLaren headed the charge after the opening bout, two points ahead of Jaguar Racing and five clear of the Porsche Formula E Team in third. Mahindra Racing were next up in fourth with Envision Racing twelve further back in fifth, while Cupra Kiro, DS Penske and Maserati MSG Racing rounded out the opening day scorers.

For the Manufacturers' Championship it was Jaguar who left the opening round as the leaders, four ahead of Nissan whom had customers McLaren to thank for their 27 point haul. Porsche opened their account in third ahead of Mahindra, Stellantis held fifth after points for their brands DS and Maserati, while Lola had emerged from their debut pointless, but with signs that they could compete with the rest of the manufacturers in season eleven.
