Post-Race Test

The 2024 Diriyah E-Prix II, officially known as the 2024 ABB FIA Formula E Diriyah E-Prix II, was the third race of the 2023/24 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, staged at the Diriyah Street Circuit in Diriyah, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on 27 January 2024.[1] The race would see Nick Cassidy secure his maiden victory as a factory Jaguar driver in only his third weekend with the team, in a race that saw the New Zealander's lead ebb and flow throughout.[2]

The grid for the third round had been set in qualifying, and had seen Oliver Rowland defeat Robin Frijns in the final by a quarter of a second to claim his first pole since the 2022 Seoul E-Prix II.[3] In order to win his first duel final in almost two seasons Rowland had defeated Jehan Daruvala in the Quarters and Cassidy in the Semis, while Frijns had knocked Jean-Éric Vergne and the Stoffel Vandoorne out of qualifying en-route to the final.[3]

Rowland made a clean getaway from pole, but with a whole day's running the day before the inside of the grid was a lot cleaner than it had been, and that allowed Frijns to muscle his way down the inside of the #22 Nissan, while Cassidy fired the #37 Jaguar around the outside of Rowland.[2] The trio went three wide into the chicane, with Frijns ultimately able to scramble out ahead of the Rowland in tow, while Cassidy held third after a brief dice with Vandoorne in the second part of the chicane.[2]

It proved to be another clean start to the race for the majority of the field, the exception being Dan Ticktum who had to pit for a new front wing after a crunch towards the back of the midfield.[2] Attack Mode came into play on lap five with Rowland taking it first with Vanoorne and Jake Hughes in tow, with Frijns reacting a lap later and just managing to keep the Brit behind.[2]

A fight duly erupted between the #4 Envision-Jaguar and the #22 Nissan, briefly interrupted by Rowland taking his second AM boost, allowing Cassidy to build a big enough gap ahead to sweep through the AM zone a few laps later.[2] With that Cassidy worked on building a small lead ahead of Frijns, who was using more energy in a bid to stay with the factory Jaguar, with those two escaping five seconds up the road from Rowland by the start of lap twelve.[2]

Cassidy's second AM boost came and went without the New Zealander losing the lead, and after briefly building a 2.5 second lead over Frijns would allow the Dutchman to close back oto his tail as he moved into a conservative phase.[2] The rest of the top eight would also begin to close on the lead duo over the following laps, as further back Sam Bird tried a lunge on Sacha Fenestraz for seventh into the chicane, but instead lost the rear and ran wide to gift eighth to Pascal Wehrlein.[2]

Bird's race came to an end a few laps later, a glance against the wall braking the suspension of the #8 McLaren-Nissan and leaving Bird limping into the pits to retire, as Wehrlein surged past Vergne for seventh.[2] Out front, meanwhile, the top six were running together with ten laps to go, with Cassidy fending off the attentions of Frijns, Rowland, Hughes, Vandoorne and Fenestraz, who had escaped from Vergne and Wehrlein during their scrap.[2]

Ultimately there would be no change to the order out front, however, with Cassidy remaining largely unchallenged from Frijns to sweep to his sixth FE victory in his 50th E-Prix, one second clear of the Dutchman in second after setting the fastest lap of the race on the final tour.[2] Rowland completed the podium in third with Hughes, Vandoorne and Fenestraz in tow, while Wehrlein, Vergne and Maximilian Günther ran out of time to get into the mix having caught the back of the top sextet in the closing stages.[2] Mitch Evans claimed the final point in tenth after a race long fight with Jake Dennis, with the two title pretenders from 2022/23 endin the day split by Edoardo Mortara in eleventh.[2]

Background[]

There were no changes to the circuit or the entry list ahead of the second race around the Diriyah Street Circuit in 2023/24, with the Attack Mode allocation also remaining the same.[1] There was, however, a change to the set race distance, with the expected race distance for the Diriyah E-Prix II reduced to 36 laps, which would allow drivers to run at full power for longer.[4]

Day 2 Delights[]

A quiet but trouble free day for Pascal Wehrlein meant that the four points he scored for eighth place in the second race of the season were enough to keep the German pilot at the head of the field, albeit with a now one point lead. A second straight podium for Nick Cassidy had left the New Zealander in second as Wehrlein's closest early contender, while Jean-Éric Vergne was up to third, two further points back. Jake Dennis and Mitch Evans then completed the top five ahead of Sébastien Buemi, as Sam Bird, Sérgio Sette Câmara and Robin Frijns all claimed their first points of the campaign.

In the Teams' Championship Jaguar Racing had jumped to the top of the pile, the British squad holding a fourteen point lead despite having yet to claim victory in 2023/24 in the opening two rounds. Andretti Formula E, courtesy of Dennis' latest triumph and further points for Norman Nato were up to second on 37 points, while DS Penske were in third on 33. Porsche's factory squad, meanwhile had slipped from the lead after the opening round to fourth at the end of the second, a point behind DS Penske, Envision Racing rounded out the top five, while ERT had earned their first points of the campaign to move into eighth.

Qualifying[]

Qualifying for the 2024 Diriyah E-Prix II would be conducted according to the knockout format, introduced ahead of season eight.[6] The field would be split into two groups of eleven drivers, based on Championship position, with each group then getting ten minutes on track to complete as many laps as they wished at 300 kW.[6] The fastest eight overall would then proceed to the knockout phase, now running at the maximum 350 kW qualifying mode, with the fastest from group A against the fourth fastest from group A and so on, until four drivers were left.[6]

Those four would move on to the Semi-Final, with the winner of A1/A4 taking on the victor of A2/A3, while the triumphant driver of B3/B2 would take on B4/B1's winner.[6] The winners from those duels would then go into the final, with the winner of that duel taking pole ahead of the runner-up, with any grid penalties applied after the conclusion of the duels.[6]

Milestones[]

Standings[]

Victory in only his third race with Jaguar Racing had sent Nick Cassidy to the top of the standings as the second race weekend came to a conclusion, the New Zealander having claimed three straight podiums and 57 points in the first three races. Pascal Wehrlein had made way for him and dropped to second, some nineteen points behind, while Jean-Éric Vergne was a further five behind in third. Jake Dennis' non-score saw him drop to fourth and 29 points behind the early leader, Mitch Evans was 36 behind his new teammate already, while Oliver Rowland and Sacha Fenestraz earned their first points of the campaign to take the total number of scorers to fifteen after three races.

In the Teams' Championship Jaguar Racing had eased further clear as they established themselves as the pace setters in 2023/24, the British squad leaving Diriyah with 78 points and a healthy 31 point advantage at the head of the field. DS Penske were the closest challengers to the factory Jaguar squad in second, while Porsche had moved back up to third ahead of their customers Andretti Formula E. The American squad themselves had suffered a rare non-score as they slipped to fourth, level with Envision Racing but ahead courtesy of Dennis' victory at the 2024 Diriyah E-Prix I, while the Nissan Formula E Team had become the latest team to add their name to the scoresheet, leaving the two Mahindra powered squads as the only pointless teams after three rounds.
