The 2024 Hankook London E-Prix I, otherwise known as the 2024 London E-Prix I, was the fifteenth and penultimate race of 2023/24 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, staged at the ExCeL E-Prix Circuit in the ExCeL Exhibition Centre in Newham, London, United Kingdom, on 20 July 2024.[2][1] The race would provide the first opportunity for Nick Cassidy to secure the season ten Drivers' Championship, although would instead see Pascal Wehrlein emerge victorious in the race and head into the finale as the Championship leader.[3]
The first battle of London began with qualifying for the penultimate race, and would see Mitch Evans, another title pretender, secure pole position and three bonus points for doing so, having defeated Sébastien Buemi by six hundredths of a second in the final duel.[4] On his run to the final Evans would top Group B before dumping Jean-Éric Vergne and then Norman Nato out of the session, while Buemi made it through Group A by finishing runner-up, with Cassidy down in ninth, before removing title contenders Oliver Rowland and the Wehrlein during the knockout phase.[4]
The start of the race saw Evans make a clean getaway and charge into the lead, while Buemi's slow start tempted Wehrlein to go on the offensive, attempting a lunge down the outside of the #16 Envision into the first corner.[3] Buemi, driving a customer Envision Racing run Jaguar, would block the move and force Wehrlein to back off, allowing Nato to storm past the #94 Porsche on the entry to turn two to challenge for third, eventually seizing the position midway through the opening tour.[3]
Further back it would be a much rougher start, with Jake Dennis elbowing Robin Frijns into the wall, resulting in the #4 Envision bouncing into Sam Bird and Frijns getting a nasty cut on his had from the impact of his steering wheel.[3] The Safety Car was scrambled to allow Frijns' car to be recovered, Bird having eventually untangled himself and resumed at the back of the field, with the race resuming on lap five with Evans heading the charge.[3]
Attack Mode came into play after the restart, although one driver to make an error in trying to activate would be Cassidy, who lost a number of positions when he missed the sensors and had to go again.[3] It was during these early exchanges that the bruising nature of the race would again come to the fore, with first Dennis and Vergne clashing at turn nineteen, the #1 Andretti briefly landing atop the front wheel of the #25 DS Penske, before Rowland and António Félix da Costa, two other title contenders, took themselves out of contention with a clumsy accident at the final corner as neither wanted to cede space.[3]
Dennis' impact on the race was not over yet, and the Brit would soon tangle himself up with Cassidy in a collision that damaged the #37 Jaguar's steering, further hampering Cassidy's pace as he remained mired in the bottom half of the field.[3] Out front, meanwhile, Buemi would briefly lead before losing out to Evans again in the AM exchanges, although both would be undercut by Wehrlein, who had sat behind the lead duo after dispatching of Nato and saved a fair amount of energy.[3]
After pouncing on Buemi Wehrlein would sweep past Evans for the lead when the New Zealander armed his second AM boost, before resisting Evans' attacks and duly breaking away far enough to take both of his AM boosts without losing the lead.[3] Energy concerns then forced Evans to curtail his challenge and even slip back behind Maximilian Günther, although the German pilot soon disappeared with an issue at the restart following a late-race safety car was called to cover the removal of debris from the circuit.[3]
That safety car did little to affect the overall order, and hence saw Wehrlein storm across the line after a clean restart to claim his third victory of the campaign, and a narrow lead at the top of the Championship standings.[3] Evans claimed fastest lap but was unable to challenge despite energy no-longer being at a premium for the final laps, while Buemi claimed third ahead of Nyck de Vries and Edoardo Mortara in the two Mahindras, enjoying their best combined race of the campaign.[3] Nico Müller was next up ahead of Cassidy, who limited the damage to his title hopes in seventh ahead of Bird, while Stoffel Vandoorne and Nato rounded out the scorers.[3]
As a result of the race Wehrlein would lead the Championship by three points from Evans, with Cassidy the only other driver still in the hunt and seven points off the lead. Jaguar Racing, meanwhile, would hold a 36 point lead in the Teams' Championship over the Porsche Formula E Team heading into the final day, while Porsche held an eight point advantage over Jaguar in the Manufacturers' Trophy, all three titles going down to the final race of the campaign.
Background[]
Three weeks after the chequered flag fell in the United States the 2023/24 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship field would reconvene for the final time in the ExCeL Exhibition Centre in London, UK, for the final two races of the season.[2] Indeed, the London E-Prix and the ExCeL E-Prix Circuit would play host to the Season 10 finale as it had done in the previous two seasons, with the circuit unmodified barring some minor alterations to the final sector due to an expansion of the Centre itself.[2] In terms of the entry list there would be one change, Oliver Rowland returning to the cockpit of the #22 Nissan after missing the races in Portland, while Attack Mode was restricted to just six minutes during the 37 lap race on Saturday.[5]
The Seven[]
Arriving in London there would be seven drivers still in mathematical contention for the Drivers' Championship title, with Nick Cassidy heading the charge on 167 points and with the opportunity to settle the fight in the first race in London. Indeed, a win for Cassidy with pole position and fastest lap would mean that he would win the title if his two closest challengers, Mitch Evans and Pascal Wehrlein tied on 155 points, failed to finish on the podium. Various other permutations would see Cassidy lift the crown, with Evans and Wehrlein the only two drivers who did not need to signficantly outscore/stay close to Cassidy in the first London E-Prix.
The remaining four would have to outscore Cassidy, headed by António Félix da Costa who had won four of the past five races on 134 points, meaning he would have to outscore Cassidy by seven points in the first race, or at least by more than four, but require a perfect score in the finale. For Rowland it would require outscoring Cassidy by ten, for Jean-Éric Vergne twelve, while defending Champion Jake Dennis would need to secure a twenty point swing over Cassidy to keep his hopes of retaining the title alive.
Team and Manufacturer Dreams[]
Likewise, the Teams' Championship would also be heading to its conclusion at the finale in London, with Jaguar Racing still heading the hunt, but with a reduced lead of 33 points over their closest challengers. Indeed, the Porsche Formula E Team, like their drivers, would head to London with a major chance of the title, particularly given that there were still 94 points on offer in London, although a max-score for Jaguar would settle the issue in the first race. Behind, DS Penske had held third over their compatriots Andretti Formula E, the first of the customer teams in the field, while the Nissan Formula E Team had endured their worst weekend of the season and slipped to fifth.
Equally tight would be the Manufacturers' Trophy as the series left the US, with Porsche retaining the lead on 407 points, but with a slim margin of nineteen over Jaguar in second. Indeed, the two manufacturers had rarely been separated by more than 20 points throughout the season, and with both having four cars in play in London either could still win the inaugural manufacturers' crown at the finale. Behind Stellantis had overhauled Nissan for third, with just five separating them in the battle for the podium, while Mahindra seemed to have dealt a serious blow to Electric Racing Technologies in their fight for fifth.

Qualifying[]
Qualifying for the 2024 London E-Prix I would be conducted according to the knockout format, introduced ahead of season eight.[7] The field would be split into two groups of eleven drivers, based on Championship position, with each group then getting ten minutes on track to complete as many laps as they wished at 300 kW.[7] The fastest eight overall would then proceed to the knockout phase, now running at the maximum 350 kW qualifying mode, with the fastest from group A against the fourth fastest from group A and so on, until four drivers were left.[7]
Those four would move on to the Semi-Final, with the winner of A1/A4 taking on the victor of A2/A3, while the triumphant driver of B3/B2 would take on B4/B1's winner.[7] The winners from those duels would then go into the final, with the winner of that duel taking pole ahead of the runner-up, with any grid penalties applied after the conclusion of the duel.[7]

Milestones[]
- Pascal Wehrlein secured his eighth career victory.
- Porsche Formula E Team earned their twelfth win as an entrant.
- Porsche claimed their fifteenth win as a powertrain supplier.
- Mitch Evans recorded his tenth fastest lap.
Standings[]
With that it was Pascal Wehrlein who would start the final race of the campaign with the Championship lead, albeit with a narrow three point margin after fifteen races in Season X. Mitch Evans was his closest challenger in second, and would draw back level with the German pilot with pole position for the 2024 London E-Prix II, while Nick Cassidy in third was just a further four behind, his season having been hampered greatly by his mistake in the 2024 Portland E-Prix I while leading. Those three were now the only three drivers in the title hunt, leaving António Félix da Costa, Oliver Rowland, Jean-Éric Vergne and Jake Dennis, whom had all failed to score in the first battle of London, to fight for fourth.
Similarly it would be a last-day fight for the honours in the Teams' Championship, although in this instance there would have to be a significant upheaval for Jaguar Racing to lose their grip on the title. Indeed, the British squad held a 36 point lead over the Porsche Formula E Team, meaning they simply had to score twelve points on the final day in order to claim their maiden Teams' Championship crown. Behind, DS Penske were on track to claim third, but would need to ensure that Andretti Formula E did not outscore them by more than seventeen points in the final race of the season, with the Nissan Formula E Team holding onto that scrap in fifth, but a further twelve behind.
Heading into the final day of the season it was just eight points separating the lead two manufacturers in the inaugural Manufacturers' Trophy battle, with Porsche holding the initiative over Jaguar. It was likely that the title would be decided by an equally slim margin, although if the manufacturers finished level on points then it would be Porsche who would claim the title, holding eight victories to Jaguar's potential five. Behind, Stellantis would enter the final day in third place, but just three ahead of Nissan in their fight to complete the podium, while Mahindra had secured fifth ahead of Electric Racing Technologies.
