Post-Race Test

The 2024 London E-Prix II, officially known as the 2024 Hankook London E-Prix II, was the final E-Prix of the sixteen round 2023/24 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship held on 21 July 2024 at the ExCeL E-Prix Circuit in Newham, London, United Kingdom.[2][1] The race would see three drivers fight for the season ten crown, with Pascal Wehrlein leading the charge from Mitch Evans and Nick Cassidy by three and seven points respectively at the start of the final day.[3]

First blood for the finale would go to Cassidy, who claimed pole position in qualifying by defeating Maximilian Günther in the final to claim the bonus three points, cutting the gap to the German pilot to just four before the start of the race.[4] On his run to the final, Cassidy would set the fastest lap in Group A before defeating Robin Frijns in the quarter final, and then significantly remove Wehrlein from the pole hunt in the semis, while Günther topped Group B before fending off the challenges of Jean-Éric Vergne and then the third title pretender Evans in the semis.[4]

The start would see Cassidy make a strong getaway to secure the lead into the first corner, before smartly pulling across the nose of Günther to prevent the #7 Maserati from attempting a lunge down the inside of the first corner.[3] That manoeuvre would also allow Evans to sweep around the outside of the Günther to secure second, while Wehrlein failed to make his way past his compatriot and instead had to fend off the attentions of Frijns through the rest of the opening tour.[3]

After a clean opening lap the finale really got off to a bang on lap two, Jake Dennis' bruising weekend coming to an end early with a collision with Edoardo Mortara that saw the Safety Car scrambled soon after.[3] The race resumed on lap five with Cassidy and Evans smartly pulling clear, although Evans was keen to keep his teammate and fellow title contender on his toes, while Wehrlein bravely threw the #94 Porsche down the inside of Günther into the final corner on lap six to move up to third and keep pace with the Jaguar duo.[3]

A second SC period of the day was required in the aftermath of lap seven, when Jehan Daruvala fed Sam Bird into the wall into the six/seven chicane, resulting in Dan Ticktum and Norman Nato also getting involved.[3] The race would resume once again on lap ten with Cassidy breaking clear in a bid to arm his first Attack Mode without slipping behind Wehrlein, which he did successfully with Evans working to block the German pilot, only for Evans to be given the green light to attack for the lead a few moments later.[3]

Evans' attack would result in Cassidy slipping to third when he armed his second AM boost, albeit safe in the knowledge that neither Evans nor Wehrlein had taken either of their boosts.[3] Behind them, meanwhile, António Félix da Costa was fighting hard to join the lead fight to support teammate Wehrlein but was caught in a fight with Vergne, while Oliver Rowland had quietly ascended to fourth and was stalking the lead group waiting for a chance to get involved.[3]

Wehrlein duly went on the attack as the race entered its final third, holding a 3% energy advantage and keen to get on with things to arm AM without losing out to Cassidy.[3] However, on lap 29 that plan looked to be in danger when the third SC was called, moments before Evans and Wehrlein both went for their first AM boosts and hence denied them the chance to do so, after da Costa misjudged a lunge on Rowland and clipped Cassidy, who subsequently suffered a puncture and was rear-ended by Günther, sending carbon everywhere at the final corner.[3]

That SC period came and went quickly with most of the carbon fibre removed, resulting in Evans and Wehrlein instantly jumping for AM after the restart and hence gifting the lead to Rowland.[3] Still they scrapped, Wehrlein desperate to use the now fading energy advantage he had to get past Evans to ensure he would secure the title, only for a mistake to ultimately decide the fate of the Season 10 Championship fight.[3]

Indeed, as the pair went for their second AM boosts Evans would miss the first marker, meaning he failed to arm the boost while Wehrlein benefitted from a perfect blocking move from teammate da Costa to ensure that he retained third.[3] All Wehrlein had to do was keep on Evans' tail over the following lap and wait for him to arm AM on the following tour, and was duly gifted second when Evans successfully armed the boost a lap later.[3]

That ultimately settled the Championship fight, with Wehrlein opting against attacking Rowland for the lead and instead focusing on keeping out of trouble while Evans had to manage his pace to ensure he used all of his AM boost before he crossed the finishing line.[3] Rowland duly swept across the line to secure his second win of the campaign, while second for Wehrlein meant he claimed the Championship by six points from Evans, who did enough to burn through his AM and complete the podium, securing the Teams' Championship for Jaguar TCS Racing.[3] da Costa finished in fourth but a time penalty for colliding with Cassidy dumped him out of the points, meaning Jaguar would win the Manufacturers' Trophy as Sébastien Buemi moved up to fourth in the Envision Racing run Jaguar to back-up Evans' podium finish.[3]

Background[]

Ahead of the Season 10 finale at the ExCeL E-Prix Circuit there would be no changes made, with the entry list also unmodified after Robin Frijns was given the all-clear to race despite receiving a hand injury in the 2024 London E-Prix I.[2][5] Indeed, the only significant change would be to the race distance for the finale, down two laps on the day before, with all of the attention instead on the fights for the three Championship titles on offer which had all lasted through to the final day.[6]

The Final Three[]

After seven drivers had started the weekend with a shot at the title, heading into the final race of the campaign a day later there were just three that were still in the fight, and in the reverse order from when they had started the weekend. Holding the lead at the start of the day would be Pascal Wehrlein on 180 points, and with an advantage of holding three race wins if the Championship went to a tie-break. Second was held by Mitch Evans on 177 points, while Nick Cassidy was in third on 173 points, who would have an advantage on count-back as he had more third place finishes if he won the race with Wehrlein in second.

Indeed, there were numerous scenarios in which any of the three drivers could win the title, although if Wehrlein won the race there would be nothing that Evans nor Cassidy could do. Indeed, Wehrlein could still win the title if he finished second with either Evans or Cassidy winning the race, although he would require the bonus points for fastest lap to overhaul Cassidy and pole and fastest lap to beat Evans in that circumstance. Evans, meanwhile, would secure the crown as long as he out-scored Wehrlein by four or more points and was not out-scored by Cassidy by eight, while Cassidy had to outscore Wehrlein by seven and ensure that he also overhauled teammate Evans but four points, requiring a finish of sixth minimum to even overcome Wehrlein's pre-race tally.

Jaguar vs Porsche[]

There would be a duel on the final day in the Teams' Championship as well as the Manufacturers' Trophy too, with the factory Jaguar Racing team facing off with the factory Porsche Formula E Team for the honours in the former, while both had four cars in play in the latter. However, the picture in both Championships was vastly different, with Jaguar Racing holding a 36 point lead over Porsche Formula E Team, meaning that they would win the title, regardless of what the Porsche squad did, if they managed to get one of their cars into the top four when the chequered flag fell. In contrast, the Porsche Formula E Team would require both of their cars to get onto the podium, even without Jaguar scoring, although would likely have to win the race outright with their second driver in fifth or higher without Jaguar scoring a single point.

The opposite state of affairs was found in the Manufacturers' Trophy, where it was Porsche whom led the way, but with a slim eight point advantage over Jaguar in second, and with four cars for each manufacturer in play, it was anyone's title. Indeed, should Porsche secure a one two with any combination of their cars then they would take the crown, while Jaguar would win the title if they could out-score the German manufacturer by nine points, with a tie-break guaranteed to end in Porsche's favour with eight victories to Jaguar's potential five.

Qualifying[]

Qualifying for the 2024 London E-Prix II would be conducted according to the knockout format, introduced ahead of season eight.[8] The field would be split into two groups of eleven drivers, based on Championship position, with each group then getting ten minutes on track to complete as many laps as they wished at 300 kW.[8] The fastest eight overall would then proceed to the knockout phase, now running at the maximum 350 kW qualifying mode, with the fastest from group A against the fourth fastest from group A and so on, until four drivers were left.[8]

Those four would move on to the Semi-Final, with the winner of A1/A4 taking on the victor of A2/A3, while the triumphant driver of B3/B2 would take on B4/B1's winner.[8] The winners from those duels would then go into the final, with the winner of that duel taking pole ahead of the runner-up, with any grid penalties applied after the conclusion of the duel.[8]

  • Jaguar declared as the 2023/24 ABB FIA Formula E Manufacturers' Trophy Champions.
    • Jaguar became the inaugural and only winners of the Manufacturers' Trophy.
  • Third victory for Oliver Rowland.
  • The Nissan Formula E Team scored their second win as an entrant.
    • Fifth win for Nissan as a powertrain supplier.

Standings[]

With that the tenth FE Championship came to an end, with Pascal Wehrlein becoming the series' ninth Champion and first German pilot to claim the title, having scored 198 points across the sixteen race campaign. Mitch Evans would, for the third time in four seasons, fall short of the crown on the final day, claiming runner-up spot for the second time with 192 points, while Nick Cassidy who had led the Championship for a fair chunk of the season, ended the campaign in third on 176. Oliver Rowland and Jean-Éric Vergne would round out the end-of-season top five, with all 22 drivers who started the season having scored, with two of the stand-in drivers having also scored in season ten.

In the Teams' Championship Jaguar Racing had earned their maiden Championship title, having scored 368 points across the season in what had been a season long fight with another factory team. Indeed, the Porsche Formula E Team had fallen 34 points short of their maiden FE title by the end of the final day of the campaign, while DS Penske were a distant third, 168 points off of the Champions. Nissan Formula E Team and Andretti Formula E completed the top five, with all eleven teams having scored points and got into double-figures for the campaign.

The first, and what would prove to be only, Manufacturers' Trophy hunt it would be Jaguar who left London with the crown, the British firm having claim 455 points across various combinations of their four cars. They had overcome Porsche on the final day by just four points, the two having been neck and neck throughout the season, while Nissan had secured third on the final day courtesy of Rowland's second victory of the campaign. Stellantis had hence missed the podium in fourth ahead of Mahindra, who would lose one of their teams for 2024/25, while Electric Racing Technologies were a distant sixth despite having kept pace with Mahindra for three quarters of the season.
