The 2024 Mexico City E-Prix, officially known as the 2024 Hankook Mexico City E-Prix, was the opening round of the 2023/24 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, staged at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez in Mexico City, Mexico, on 13 January 2024.[1] The race would see Pascal Wehrlein sweep to an ominious victory in the opening race of the season, continuing his and Porsche's strong form at the circuit.[3]
It had been a fairly tame winter for Formula E off circuit, with plans to introduce Attack Charge midway through Season X furthered with more testing, while teams themselves busied themselves revising their driver line-ups and implementing upgraded software after a hectic 2022/23 season. The big move off-track would be the factory Jaguar Racing team signing Nick Cassidy from customers Envision Racing, prompting Sam Bird to join McLaren, while reigning Champion Jake Dennis received a new teammate in the form of Norman Nato.[4]
Qualifying for the season opener had seen Wehrlein secure his fourth career pole position, all of which had been secured in Mexico, after defeating Sébastien Buemi in the final by a quarter of a second.[5] En-route to the final Wehrlein would defeat Buemi's new-for-2023/24 teammate Robin Frijns and then the Swiss ace's former teammate in Cassidy, while Buemi himself bested Jake Hughes and then the other factory Jaguar of Evans in order to make his third duel-final appearance.[5]
Wehrlein showed his intent at the start fo the race, surging off the grid as soon as the lights went out to claim a strong lead, building a one second advantage before the end of the opening tour.[3] Frijns, meanwhile, tumbled from seventh to fifteenth with a glitch that dumped him right into the midfield swarm, although fortunately there were no major dramas on the opening tour as the field quickly settled into a stable order.[3]
Instead it was lap three when the first major incident of the season occurred, with António Félix da Costa clashing with Nico Müller clashing in the lower end if the field to leave the #13 Porsche out with suspension damage, and the #51 ABT Cupra Mahindra in the barriers.[3] Müller dragged himself out of the barriers would further intervention, as up front Wehrlein surrendered the lead by taking his first Attack Mode boost of the season, with Buemi and Cassidy following through a lap later.[3]
Indeed, early calls for AM would be made throughout the top-ten, with Maximilian Günther the only holdout from the original top-ten, with Dennis the only other driver waiting to use AM as he tried to recover from his poor result in qualifying.[3] Those two would eventually take their first AMs as several of the leaders took their second servings, with Wehrlein dropping back behind Buemi for a second time moments before the Swiss pilot's teammate Frijns found the wall at the Foro Sol.[3]
Frijns' accident, which came moments after he had danced around the outside of Edoardo Mortara triggered a Full Course Yellow, which would stay out until the end of lap eleven, long enough for everyone in AM to burn through it.[3] Buemi's bolt came exiting the Peraltada, which was successful in allowing the #16 Envision-Jaguar to arm his second AM boost on lap twelve and only drop back behind Wehrlein and into second ahead of Günther.[3]
Two laps would be added as a result of the FCY, which would prove to be the last major drama of the race, the top four having steadily escaped as Evans became bottleneck in the latter stages of the race, coming under huge pressure from Jean-Éric Vergne.[3] Indeed, as the race entered its final tour the #9 Jaguar would have to fend off attacks from Vergne, Hughes and Stoffel Vandoorne, although with limited overtaking spots the New Zealander knew he had weathered the worst of the storm after placing his car in the middle of the track entering turn one.[3]
Out front, meanwhile, Wehrlein was controlling his pace beautifully, maintaining a one second lead and handsome 1% energy advantage over Buemi through to the chequered flag, securing his fifth career victory and second in Mexico City.[3] Buemi claimed second ahead of Cassidy, who claimed fastest lap on the penultimate tour, while Günther dropped away in the final lap to a lonely fourth to make sure he finished with enough energy.[3] Evans battled to the flag to hold fifth ahead of Vergne, Hughes and Vandoorne, while Dennis led teammate Nato to ninth and tenth to open his title defence with two points.[3]

Qualifying[]
Qualifying for the 2024 Mexico City E-Prix would be conducted according to the knockout format, introduced ahead of season eight.[7] The field would be split into two groups of eleven drivers, based on Championship position, with each group then getting ten minutes on track to complete as many laps as they wished at 300 kW.[7] The fastest eight overall would then proceed to the knockout phase, now running at the maximum 350 kW qualifying mode, with the fastest from group A against the fourth fastest from group A and so on, until four drivers were left.[7]
Those four would move on to the Semi-Final, with the winner of A1/A4 taking on the victor of A2/A3, while the triumphant driver of B3/B2 would take on B4/B1's winner.[7] The winners from those duels would then go into the final, with the winner of that duel taking pole, while the runner-up would start from second, before any grid penalties were applied.[7]

Milestones[]
- Debut race for Jehan Daruvala.
- 100th race for ABT Sportsline as an entrant in Formula E.[12]
- Fifth career victory for Pascal Wehrlein.
- The Porsche Formula E Team secured their sixth victory.
- Eighth win for Porsche as a powertrain supplier.
- Fifth fastest lap set by Nick Cassidy.
- Jean-Éric Vergne became the second driver to score over 1,000 points in Formula E (1002)
Standings[]
Victory in the opening race had left Pascal Wehrlein as the unsurprisingly Championship leader with one race gone, while the bonus points for fastest lap left him with a handsome ten point lead over Sébastien Buemi. Buemi held a two point grip on second over Nick Cassidy, who had also claimed a bonus point with fastest lap, with four points separating the New Zealander from Maximilian Günther in fourth. Mitch Evans rounded out the opening day to five, with Jean-Éric Vergne, Jake Hughes, Stoffel Vandoorne, defending Champion Jake Hughes and Norman Nato all having opened the season with points after the first race.
In the Teams' Championship Wehrlein's pole-victory combo had left the factory Porsche Formula E Team at the head of the pack, the German squad heading the factory Jaguar Racing team by 2 points after the opening bout of the season. Third was occupied by Envision Racing courtesy of Buemi, while Maserati MSG Racing held fourth over DS Penske, both level on 12 but the Monegasque squad ahead thanks to Günther's fourth place finish. McLaren Formula E Team and Andretti Formula E rounded out the opening day scorers.
