The 2024 Shanghai E-Prix II, officially known as the 2024 ABB Formula E Shanghai E-Prix II, was the twelfth race of the 2023/24 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, staged at the Shanghai International Circuit in Jiading, Shanghai, China on 26 May 2024.[1] The race would see António Félix da Costa complete a stunning and well executed victory, seizing the lead on lap sixteen and then placing his car perfectly to prevent Jake Hughes and Norman Nato having built an energy advantage in the early stages.[2]
The build-up to the second Shanghai E-Prix of the weekend had seen Hughes claim pole position by the slimmest of margins, the Brit defeating Stoffel Vandoorne in the final duel by just 0.001s despite the Belgian racer besting him in two of the three sectors.[3] In his run to the finals Hughes would top Group B before fending off Nato and then da Costa in the knockout round, while Vandoorne finished second in Group A before he bested Nick Cassidy and then former teammate Nyck de Vries.[3]
The start of the race would see Vandoorne storm past Hughes to claim the lead into the first corner, with da Costa almost able to follow the #2 DS Penske through, but would instead hold back and fire past Hughes later around the opening tour.[2] Behind, a clean get away for the rest of the field meant there were no major dramas through the opening corners nor though the opening tour, with Nato moving up to fourth and Cassidy up to sixth behind de Vries.[2]
That latter quartet would start the ball rolling with regards to Attack Mode when the boost became active on lap three, with Nato deciding to go on the offensive soon after, storming past Hughes and da Costa in one sweep into turn one, and then lunging past Vandoorne for the lead at turn six.[2] Behind the two Jaguars of Cassidy and Mitch Evans would work together to create gaps for eachother to reduce the potential time loss around AM, Cassidy taking both of his AM boosts early, although the overall order would remain fairly stable.[2]
The last of leaders to arm AM would be da Costa, who first fired past Vandoorne and then Nato on lap nine before arming the boost, only to repeat the feat again armed with 50 kW more power.[2] Lap eleven saw a repeat, da Costa arming AM to fall back behind Nato, only to fire back past sister Porsche run by Andretti almost instant, while Vandoorne briefly slipped behind Hughes before sweeping back ahead of the #5 McLaren-Nissan.[2]
As that was going on the title challenging #94 Porsche of Pascal Wehrlein was limping into the pits, the German racer having been given a puncture from contact with Sam Bird that meant he had crawl back into the pitlane for a new left-rear.[2] Bird's race was over soon after, more contact proving fatal to the #8 McLaren, with Wehrlein rejoining at the back of the field gambling on a Safety Car to bring him back into contention.[2]
da Costa began to show his control over the rest of the field after this, holding onto a one second lead out front and measuring his pace against those behind having built an early advantage in terms of energy.[2] Instead, the race would be instead a story of the battle for the podium, with Cassidy trying a lunge at Hughes that only succeeded in breaking the #37 Jaguar's front wing, before Hughes threw the #5 McLaren around the outside of Nato into turn one, and eventually emerge ahead by turn six on lap eighteen.[2]
That, ultimately, would be that for the fight out front though, with da Costa calmly sweeping across the line ten laps later to secure his second win in three races, having kept Hughes at arm's length throughout the final third of the race.[2] Hughes' second place meant he finished on the podium for the first time with Nato half a second behind, while Cassidy and Evans finished nose-to-tail with Vandoorne and Jean-Éric Vergne in tow.[2] Maximilian Günther chased the two sister DS Penskes across the line in eighth ahead of Robin Frijns, while the final point went to Oliver Rowland as just eight seconds covered the top ten.[2]
Background[]
There were no changes to the Shanghai International Circuit ahead of the second race of the weekend, with conditions likewise expected to remain the same as they had for the 2024 Shanghai E-Prix I on Saturday.[4] Indeed, with the entry list also remaining stable and the Attack Mode activation remaining at two activations lasting a total of six minutes, the only modification would be a reduction in race distance for the second race of the weekend, down to 28 laps in a bid to increase the race pace.[4]
Jaguar Justice[]
It was Nick Cassidy who would end the first day in Shanghai as the Championship leader, although the New Zealander's lead had been cut to thirteen points. Indeed, how crucial Pascal Wehrlein's last lap defence would prove in the Championship to keep Cassidy at bay would be proved later in the season, as it also meant that he had pulled twelve clear of Oliver Rowland in third. Behind them, Mitch Evans had moved to within eight on the British pilot as he mounted another late-season bid for a Championship crown, while Jake Dennis had slipped to third and 42 points off of the lead.
In the Teams' Championship it had been a strong day for Jaguar Racing, the British squad having moved 76 points clear after their fourth win of the campaign and second double podium. The Porsche Formula E Team had remained their closet challengers, but had lost ground in the opening exchanges in Shanghai, while the Nissan Formula E Team were third, 45 points away from the German squad. DS Penske had kept up the pressure on Nissan in fourth, sixteen behind, while Andretti Formula E had likewise kept pace with the fight for third, a further three behind.
It was status quo in the Manufacturers' Trophy after the eleventh race of the campaign, with Jaguar having eeked out a thirteen point lead over their closest challengers Porsche, after a race where the two had exchanged serious blows. Behind, Nissan had solidified their grip on third, having moved seventeen clear of Stellantis in fourth, while Mahindra had moved ten clear of Electric Racing Technologies in the fight to avoid the wooden spoon.

Qualifying[]
Qualifying for the 2024 Shanghai E-Prix II would be conducted according to the knockout format, introduced ahead of season eight.[6] The field would be split into two groups of eleven drivers, based on Championship position, with each group then getting ten minutes on track to complete as many laps as they wished at 300 kW.[6] The fastest eight overall would then proceed to the knockout phase, now running at the maximum 350 kW qualifying mode, with the fastest from group A against the fourth fastest from group A and so on, until four drivers were left.[6]
Those four would move on to the Semi-Final, with the winner of A1/A4 taking on the victor of A2/A3, while the triumphant driver of B3/B2 would take on B4/B1's winner.[6] The winners from those duels would then go into the final, with the winner of that duel taking pole ahead of the runner-up, with any grid penalties applied after the conclusion of the duel.[6]

Standings[]
In the Drivers' Championship it had been a net win for Nick Cassidy, the New Zealander having opened out a 25 point lead over his closest challenger as a result of his fourth place finish in the second battle of Shanghai. Pascal Wehrlein had remained his closest challenger in second, despite his puncture meaning he suffered only his second non-score of the season, while Mitch Evans was up to third and only ten points away. Oliver Rowland had made way for the second New Zealander and slipped a point behind him, but remained an outside shot for the title, while Jake Dennis retained fifth with his hopes of back-to-back titles reliant on a strong weekend in Portland.
Jaguar Racing had retained the lead in the Teams' Championship leaving Shanghai, the British squad having moved onto 299 points after the twelfth round of the campaign. The Porsche Formula E Team still remained their largest threat, albeit 53 points away in second, while the Nissan Formula E Team were another 69 points away in third. Indeed, Nissan would likely spend the final part of the season looking over their shoulders rather than ahaead, with DS Penske and Andretti Formula E both within four points of the Japanese squad in the battle to complete the Championship podium.
In the Manufacturers' Trophy it was Porsche who would leave Shanghai at the head of the field, the German manfacturer having overturned a thirteen point deficit into a nine point lead with four races to go. Jaguar remained as their main challenger however, with those two heading into the final quarter of the season as the main pretenders for the inaugural crown as Nissan trailed by 92 points in third. The Japanese manufacturer had at least gained some breathing room over Stellantis in fourth, leaving China with 23 points in hand, while it was status quo at the bottom of the table as Mahindra held a ten point lead over Electric Racing Technologies.
