The 2025 Jeddah E-Prix I, officially known as the 2025 ABB Formula E Jeddah E-Prix, was the third race of the 2024/25 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, staged at the Jeddah Corniche Circuit in Jeddah, Mecca Province, Saudi Arabia on 14 February 2025.[1] The race, which was the first to be held in Jeddah after it replaced Diriyah as Saudi Arabia's chosen FE host venue, would see Maximilian Günther claim a somewhat surprise victory in the final complex of corners from Oliver Rowland, as Pit Boost made its long awaited debut.[2][3]
After a rookie Free Practice session topped by Kush Maini, it was Günther who emerged on pole position in qualifying, the German pilot having defeated Pascal Wehrlein in the final to earn his first pole since 2023.[4] En-route to the final Günther had finished second in Group A before taking on and defeating Nyck de Vries and then Taylor Barnard, while Wehrlein claimed third in Group B before fending off challenges from Jake Hughes and then Rowland in the semi-final to keep his 100% Final appearance record in Season 11 alive.[4]
The start of the race saw Günther make a clean getaway, charging into the lead as Wehrlein moved to block Rowland from flying through to second in the opening chicane, although that ploy ultimately failed as Rowland elbowed his way past the #1 Porsche by the exit of the chicane.[3] That left Wehrlein at the mercy of the pack behind, and in a clumsy collision Mitch Evans would smack the back of the defending Champion and send Wehrlein limping back to the pits with a rear puncture.[3]
Indeed, it proved to be a scrappy opening tour throughout the field, with Evans later picking up heavy front wing damage after more contact, while Nico Müller went flying over the back of António Félix da Costa in the middle of the pack, ending his race and dumping the #13 Porsche to the back.[3] Other contac throughout the field saw various drivers with battle wounds, although by the end of the opening tour only the #51 Andretti of Müller was out of contention completely.[3]
Günther quickly raced into a two second lead in the opening few laps, although as the German pilot began to focus on energy saving the Safety Car was called on lap eight, to allow the removal of some debris from da Costa, lasting for a couple of minutes.[3] That bunched the field back up and allowed de Vries to move forward, taking third from Barnard, while Rowland waited a couple of laps before lunging past Günther for the lead, a move that the #7 DS Penske driver opted not to defend.[3]
With that Pit Boost made its first appearance, with Hughes leading Barnard and da Costa into the pits for their first ever in-race charges, with the drivers sitting for 30 seconds to receive 10% more energy to complete the race.[3] As that was going on chaos reigned on track as Jean-Éric Vergne armed his first Attack Mode along with several other drivers, meaning the leader board soon became a blur of motion with position changes on and off the track.[3]
Amid that chaos Barnard and Hughes would jump Günther, while Rowland and de Vries eded up at the head of the field, although it wasn't long before Günther moved back up past Hughes in the sister Maserati to claim fourth.[3] The top four then began to breakaway as the race hit half-distance, before Rowland himself broke clear to build a four second lead, only for Günther to begin reeling the British racer back in as the race entered its closing stages.[3]
With a lap to go Günther was right within striking distance of the #23 Nissan, although his first attempt at claiming the lead into the first chicane was swatted aside.[3] A second nose into the second chicane was likewise thwarted, with Günther instead plotting a feint into the hairpin knowing that he had the upper-hand when it came to energy as the duo, now joined by Barnard and de Vries due to their fighting, entered the final sector.[3]
That feint was ignored but it did force Rowland to defend into the final chicane, and with energy at a premium, the #23 Nissan was powerless to prevent the #7 DS Penske sweeping around the outside into the final chicane to claim the lead, with Günther duly storming out of the final corner to claim his first victory since the 2024 Tokyo E-Prix.[3] Rowland held second from Barnard and de Vries, while Hughes was a distant fifth ahead of Vergne.[3] Edoardo Mortara was next up ahead of Sam Bird, da Costa recovered to ninth ahead of Stoffel Vandoorne, while title pretenders Wehrlein, Nick Cassidy and Evans all failed to score.[3]
Background[]
A month after the series' second E-Prix of the campaign in Mexico City the field reconvened in unfamiliar surroundings, settling in at the Jeddah Corniche Circuit in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia for the first time.[1] A venue originally constructed for Formula One to stage the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, the Saudi Arabian E-Prix organisers had decieed to move their annual double-headed E-Prix to Jeddah, rather than continue to use the Diriyah Street Circuit which had faced issues with expansion as well as issues with dust build-up during race weekends.[5] Instead, the move to Jeddah saw the series use a modified version of the Grand Prix circuit, which cut the circuit in two and then added several chicanes to better suit the needs of a Formula E car.[6]
Rookie Returns[]
Jeddah was chosen to host the first Rookie Test session of the season, which would see all eleven teams field rookie drivers in a bonus 40 minute test session ahead of the race weekend, scheduled for the Thursday before the race weekend proper.[7] Mahindra Racing were the first to embrace the test, announcing Kush Maini as their driver for the session, soon followed by Envision Racing and Cupra Kiro, who announced Zak O'Sullivan and Mikkel Jensen as their pilots.[8][9][10] McLaren, meanwhile, would continue their run of using their youth development programme to find drivers, handing Alex Dunne his FE bow having revealed previously he would be their test and reserve driver, while DS Penske went in the opposite direction and signed F1 and WEC veteran Daniil Kvyat to sample their car during the session.[11][12]
Nissan would opt to run Gabriele Minì for a second successive rookie test, the Italian having driven for them at the Berlin Test in 2024, while Maserati secured Théo Pourchaire's services for the day, the Frenchman having previously been a Spark Racing Technologies development driver for the original Generation 3 concept.[13][14] Jak Crawford was another returning face, with Andretti Formula E running the American youth once again, while Thomas Preining returned for Porsche as their long serving test/reserve driver.[15][16] Finally, Jaguar Racing and Lola Yamaha ABT would opt to go in another direction, fielding the only two female drivers in the test in the forms of Jamie Chadwick for the former, and Tatiana Calderón for the latter.[17][18]
Boosting Bounty?[]
Another noteworthy change ahead of the Jeddah E-Prix would be the long anticipated debut of Pit Boost, a system developed alongside the Gen 3 platform to bring fast charging to Formula E, albeit one that had faced extensive delays and issues due to various factors.[2] A full race simulation featuring the Boost System was held at the 2024 Jarama Test, and after various revisions to the rulebook to accomodate the system, the series revealed that the system would feature at every round with a double-header format.[2] The system, provided by Fortescue Zero to all teams, would require drivers to pit for 30 seconds to receive up to 4 kWh of energy, with teams only able to charge one car at a time, with the series aiming to add a strategic element to E-Prix not featured in the series before.[19]
Mexican Marvals[]
Two second place finishes in the opening two rounds, combined with a bonus point for fastest lap, meant that António Félix da Costa left Mexico at the head of the hunt, twelve points ahead of Season XI's two early race winners. Oliver Rowland was deemed ahead of Mitch Evans after his Mexico victory, boosted by a non-scoring finish in the season opener, while defending Champion Pascal Wehrlein was up to fourth after his two pole positions and a third place finish. Taylor Barnard then completed the top five ahead of Jake Dennis and Sam Bird, with sixteen drivers now on the score sheet after two races.
In the Teams' Championship it was TAG Heuer Porsche Formula E Team that ended the second day of the season in control, the German squad having not only leapt to the head of the field but also earned double the points of their closest challengers in second. NEOM McLaren Formula E Team had made way for the factory Porsche squad but retained second, while Jaguar TCS Racing held third ahead of Nissan Formula E Team, both on 25 points. Mahindra Racing then completed the top five ahead of DS Penske, while points for Andretti Formula E meant that Lola Yamaha ABT Formula E Team were left as the only pointless team after just two E-Prix.
The Manufacturers' Championship would make it three Championship leads out of three for Porsche, with the German manufacturer also heading that title hunt, albeit by just a single point from Nissan. A small gap followed before Jaguar appeared in third, with another gap following to Mahindra and Stellantis, themselves just a point apart. Lola Cars then rounded out the standings with their first point of the campaign.

Qualifying[]
Qualifying for the 2025 Jeddah E-Prix I would be conducted according to the knockout format, introduced ahead of season eight.[23] The field would be split into two groups of eleven drivers, based on Championship position, with each group then getting ten minutes on track to complete as many laps as they wished at 300 kW.[23] The fastest eight overall would then proceed to the knockout phase, now running at the maximum 350 kW qualifying mode and with AWD active, with the fastest from group A against the fourth fastest from group A and so on, until four drivers were left.[23] Those four would move on to the Semi-Final, with the winner of A1/A4 taking on the victor of A2/A3, while the triumphant driver of B3/B2 would take on B4/B1's winner.[23]
The winners from those duels would then go into the final, with the winner of that duel taking pole ahead of the runner-up, with any grid penalties applied after the conclusion of the final.[23]

- * Ticktum served a 25 second time penalty (converted from a drive through penalty) for having mechanics working after the "ready to move status" was activated.[27]
- † di Grassi was disqualified from the results of the race for using more than the total permitted energy allowed (42.35 kWh).[28]
Milestones[]
- First Jeddah E-Prix to be staged.
- First E-Prix to be held at the Jeddah Corniche Circuit.
- Pit Boost featured in an E-Prix for the first time.
- Maximilian Günther secured his sixth victory.
- DS Penske claimed their second victory as a combined entrant (fourth for Dragon Racing).
- Also DS Dragon Racing's first win since the 2023 Hyderabad E-Prix.
- DS claimed their sixteenth win as a manufacturer (eighteenth for a Stellantis brand).
Standings[]
Oliver Rowland ended the opening bout in Jeddah at the head of the Championship hunt, the British ace having moved onto 43 points after the opening three races after his second consecutive podium finish. António Félix da Costa had made way for him, but had only slipped four points behind after his recovery drive, while victory had launched Maximilian Günther into third ahead of Taylor Barnard. Mitch Evans then completed the top five ahead of Nyck de Vries and Pascal Wehrlein, with no new names on the scoresheet after race three.
In the Teams' Championship TAG Heuer Porsche Formula E Team had retained the lead in the title hunt, albeit only because of their healthy haul of points across the opening two races instead of their race three earnings. Indeed, DS Penske had moved up to second after Günther's heroics, leaving them just three off the lead, while NEOM McLaren Formula E Team had kept the pace up in third. Nissan Formula E Team, meanwhile, had retained fourth but moved closer to the title fight, matched by Mahindra Racing, while Lola Yamaha ABT Formula E Team had retained their status as the only pointless team in Season 11.
For the Manufacturers' Championship it had been a positive day for Nissan, the Japanese manufacturer having jumped ahead of Porsche and established a 25 point lead to boot. Stellantis, meanwhile, had claimed the biggest points haul of the day as they ascended to third ahead of Jaguar, with Mahindra also eyeing up a move up the order, sat just a point behind the British marque.
