The 2025 Mexico City E-Prix, officially known as the 2025 Hankook Mexico City E-Prix, was the second round of the 2024/25 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, staged at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez in Mexico City, Mexico, on 11 January 2025.[1][2] The race would see Oliver Rowland claim victory with a late barrage of overtakes, overhauling the two factory Porsches as well as Jake Dennis after two quick-fire Safety Cars in the closing stages changed the complexion of the E-Prix.[3]
Qualifying had been an all Porsche affair, with Pascal Wehrlein defeating teammate António Félix da Costa in the final to secure pole position, setting a new record of four pole positions at the same venue in the process.[4] On his run to his second pole of the campaign Wehrlein would see off Edoardo Mortara and then Rowland having previously topped Group A, while da Costa had to best Dennis before knocking Jean-Éric Vergne out of the running in the semi-finals.[4]
It was a clean start for the front of the field when the lights went out, with Wehrlein able to beat da Costa into the first corner to secure the lead, while Rowland threatened to claim third from Vergne but was ultimately thwarted.[3] Indeed, the reprofiled first corner had ensured that there were no major incidents to cause early strife, with the field largely completing the first lap in grid order, barring some shuffling towards the back of the field.[3]
Indeed, it was only when Taylor Barnard started the Attack Mode phase of the race on lap three that the order properly started to shuffle, with the Brit trying to make progress from the back of the field with the aid of 4WD and an additional 50 kW of power.[3] The ploy worked with the rookie moving into the top ten before aiding teammate Sam Bird to get the boost without losing a position, with the drivers at the head of the field opting to hold out a few laps longer, Nico Müller the first of the front drivers to arm his boost on lap ten.[3]
While less potent than it had been in 2024/25 São Paulo E-Prix Müller proved the power of AM, moving up to sixth in the wake of teammate Dennis before tactfully allowing Dennis to build a gap to allow the Brit to arm his first AM boost without being assaulted from behind.[3] That tactic worked beautifully to allow Dennis to carry-on his harrying of Vergne for fourth, before he began to hassle Rowland for third, allowing Wehrlein to escape out ahead with teammate da Costa dropping back to prevent Rowland and Dennis nipping ahead.[3]
Wehrlein duly retained the lead when he armed his AM boost, moments before Rowland elbowed his way past da Costa for second through the Peraltada, a move which also allowed Dennis to move through, before the Brit surged past Rowland and then caught and passed Wehrlein for the lead through the Foro Sol, moments before his first AM boost finished.[3] With that the order began to seetle with Dennis leading from Wehrlein, Rowland, da Costa and Vergne, with everyone bar da Costa having taken their first AM boost by the halfway point.[3]
da Costa's first AM boost came on lap nineteen, and would result in him vaulting through to the lead before the end of lap twenty, just as teammate Wehrlein activated his second boost, dropping to fifth but with six minutes of boost to use.[3] Dennis and da Costa followed resutling in a stalemate at the head of the field, until Wehrlein pulled the exact same move that Dennis had used on him to reclaim second behind da Costa, with the three Porsches at the head of the field ending their fighting to pull steadily clear of the rest of the field.[3]
Rowland was their closest challenger, but within moments of him arming his final AM boost the Safety Car was scrambled, David Beckmann having stopped in the Foro Sol with damage.[3] Fortunately for the Brit the errant Cupra Kiro was dragged clear very quickly, leaving Rowland with one minute left of his AM and now right on the tail of the lead trio.[3] With almost surgical prevision the #23 Nissan stormed to the head of the field, easing past Dennis into turn one, selling Wehrlein a dummy into turn five, before slicing past da Costa with seconds of his boost left to claim the lead.[3]
The only jeapordy for Rowland was the fact that his late charge had seen him forefit a fair amount of energy, and he was around 2% down on the two Porsches in his wake.[3] Yet, a second SC period, this one caused by Mitch Evans and Müller coming to blows with five laps to go would settle this issue, for the two laps spent behind the SC would allow him to save enough energy for a three-lap sprint to the finish, meaning da Costa and Wehrlein would have to get the job done without the use of their energy advantage.[3]
Ultimately there would be no last gasp change for the lead, with Rowland placing his car superbly to claim his first victory of the campaign, da Costa having glued himself to the #23 Nissan's tail but found no way past.[3] Wehrlein claimed third after getting into a scrap with Dennis on the final tour, while Vergne lead teammate Maximilian Günther across the line for fifth and sixth, with the sister car of Stoffel Vandoorne trailing behind.[3] Nyck de Vries continued his auspicious start to the season in eighth ahead of Müller, while Jake Hughes earned his first points of the season with tenth.[3]
Background[]
A month after the spectacular season opener in São Paulo the 2024/25 field would reassemble at the familiar sight of the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez in Mexico City, Mexico, marking the series' ninth visit to the Mexican capital.[1] The drivers would find a few minor modifications to the layout for the E-Prix version of the Mexican F1 host circuit, largely concerned with reprofiling the first corner apex, although the Attack Mode activation zone remained in the stadium section as it had in previous trips to the circuit.[1] The race was also not expected to feature Pit Boost, although there was potential for a test of the system to be made during the weekend.[1]
Evans' Endeavour[]
Victory for Mitch Evans had left the New Zealander at the head of the Championship hunt after the opening bout of the season, although his lead was just six points after António Félix da Costa had been awarded the bonus point for fastest lap. Taylor Barnard was next up ahead of teammate Sam Bird, Edoardo Mortara headed his teammate Nyck de Vries, Sébastien Buemi and Dan Ticktum, while pole position points meant Pascal Wehrlein opened his title defence in ninth. Jean-Éric Vergne and Stoffel Vandoorne rounded out the scorers.
In the Teams' Championship the late fortune had ensured that NEOM McLaren headed the charge after the opening bout, two points ahead of Jaguar Racing and five clear of the Porsche Formula E Team in third. Mahindra Racing were next up in fourth with Envision Racing twelve further back in fifth, while Cupra Kiro, DS Penske and Maserati MSG Racing rounded out the opening day scorers.
For the Manufacturers' Championship it was Jaguar who left the opening round as the leaders, four ahead of Nissan whom had customers McLaren to thank for their 27 point haul. Porsche opened their account in third ahead of Mahindra, Stellantis held fifth after points for their brands DS and Maserati, while Lola had emerged from their debut pointless, but with signs that they could compete with the rest of the manufacturers in season eleven.

Qualifying[]
Qualifying for the 2025 Mexico City E-Prix would be conducted according to the knockout format, introduced ahead of season eight.[6] The field would be split into two groups of eleven drivers, based on Championship position, with each group then getting ten minutes on track to complete as many laps as they wished at 300 kW.[6] The fastest eight overall would then proceed to the knockout phase, now running at the maximum 350 kW qualifying mode and with AWD active, with the fastest from group A against the fourth fastest from group A and so on, until four drivers were left.[6]
Those four would move on to the Semi-Final, with the winner of A1/A4 taking on the victor of A2/A3, while the triumphant driver of B3/B2 would take on B4/B1's winner.[6] The winners from those duels would then go into the final, with the winner of that duel taking pole ahead of the runner-up, with any grid penalties applied after the conclusion of the final.[6]

Milestones[]
- 50th E-Prix for Dan Ticktum.
- Oliver Rowland claimed his fourth victory.
- Nissan Formula E Team earned their third victory as an entrant.
- Sixth win for Nissan as a manufacturer.
- Jake Dennis moved level with Sam Bird for the record for most fastest laps recorded (12).
Standings[]
Two second place finishes in the opening two rounds, combined with a bonus point for fastest lap, meant that António Félix da Costa left Mexico at the head of the hunt, twelve points ahead of Season XI's two early race winners. Oliver Rowland was deemed ahead of Mitch Evans after his Mexico victory, boosted by a non-scoring finish in the season opener, while defending Champion Pascal Wehrlein was up to fourth after his two pole positions and a third place finish. Taylor Barnard then completed the top five ahead of Jake Dennis and Sam Bird, with sixteen drivers now on the score sheet after two races.
In the Teams' Championship it was TAG Heuer Porsche Formula E Team that ended the second day of the season in control, the German squad having not only leapt to the head of the field but also earned double the points of their closest challengers in second. NEOM McLaren Formula E Team had made way for the factory Porsche squad but retained second, while Jaguar TCS Racing held third ahead of Nissan Formula E Team, both on 25 points. Mahindra Racing then completed the top five ahead of DS Penske, while points for Andretti Formula E meant that Lola Yamaha ABT Formula E Team were left as the only pointless team after just two E-Prix.
The Manufacturers' Championship would make it three Championship leads out of three for Porsche, with the German manufacturer also heading that title hunt, albeit by just a single point from Nissan. A small gap followed before Jaguar appeared in third, with another gap following to Mahindra and Stellantis, themselves just a point apart. Lola Cars then rounded out the standings with their first point of the campaign.
