The 2025 Monaco E-Prix I, officially known as the 2025 ABB Formula E Monaco E-Prix I, was the sixth race of the 2024/25 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, staged at the Circuit de Monaco in Monte Carlo, Monaco, on 3 May 2025.[1] The race would be the first of two held in Monte Carlo in 2025, and would see a mid-race Full Course Yellow completely shakeup the order.[2]
Taylor Barnard was the man to beat in qualifying, as the British racer swept to his second career pole position with a calm victory in the final, after rival Oliver Rowland slammed the barriers right at the start of his run and effectively handed the #5 NEOM McLaren the win.[3] On his run to the final Barnard would have to eliminate last year's Monaco victor Mitch Evans in the quarters, before eliminating a rapid Dan Ticktum, while Rowland swept aside Pascal Wehrlein before removing Nyck de Vries from the hunt for pole in the semis.[3]
It was a relatively quiet start to the race, with Barnard sweeping away from the grid unopposed to secure the lead into Sainte Devote for the first time, while Rowland immediately darted across to block Ticktum from scything down the inside.[2] That allowed de Vries to elbow his way past the #33 Cupra Kiro to claim third, while behind there was no major drama in the midfield as everyone quickly settled into a crocodile formation.[2]
Indeed, with Pit Boost coming into play once the batteries got down to 70% charge remaining it was essentially a holding pattern for the field, with the top half of the field slowly inching clear with Wehrlein the one to watch, harassing Ticktum for fourth at every opportunity.[2] Further back, meanwhile, Nico Müller would be forced to pit early with a puncture, while Nick Cassidy was the first driver to arm Attack Mode on lap five, which would see him storm up to sixth after just four minutes of use.[2]
Cassidy's surge prompted more action in the field, and would hence see António Félix da Costa try to move up the order, although his ambitious lunge at Edoardo Mortara, who was also lunging at David Beckmann into Anthony Nogues, ended in disaster.[2] Indeed, the #13 Porsche ended smashed against the inside wall to trigger a FCY to neutralise the field, with a three lap intervention required for da Costa's car to be lifted away to safety.[2]
The race resumed with de Vries getting mugged by Jake Dennis, the #27 Andretti storming past both the #21 Mahindra and Wehrlein as the #94 Porsche got caught with nowhere to go when de Vries reacted slowly to the race going live again.[2] Up front, meanwhile, Rowland would wind himself up to attack Barnard for the lead with the pitstops looming, and would ultimately succeed with his second attempt, after twice forcing Barnard to cut chicanes in order to hold onto the lead.[2]
With that Rowland was away, using his first Attack Mode in a but to build a gap, while Barnard slipped back slightly into the sights of Dennis, while Cassidy got the ball rolling on Pit Boost by stopping for his battery boost at the earliest opportunity.[2] A lap later and Müller would also venture into the pits for his scheduled stop, one which would prove incredibly significant as the FCY was thrown again just as he entered the pits, for Evans had ground to a halt midway around the lap.[2]
That FCY intervention would last a lap before Evans got himself going again, with Barnard briefly leading until Rowland powered back ahead with Attack Mode, primpting Barnard and Dennis to do the opposite of the Brit and venture in for their Boosts.[2] de Vries and Wehrlein would follow Rowland's tactic and pit later, although once everyone had completed their pit stops there would be a shock name at the head of the field, with Müller now heading the pack from Cassidy, but with both having significant energy deficiencies to the rest of the field.[2]
Indeed, Müller's seven second advantage quickly evapourated as Rowland led the chase to hunt him down, with de Vries, Dennis, Barnard, Mortara and Wehrlein also in close proximity, and all would barge past Cassidy who was in an awful place with his remaining energy.[2] With five laps to go de Vries would lunge past Rowland and then sweep past Müller to claim the lead with the last of his Attack Mode, before Rowland used his final boost to storm not only into the lead but pull clear with two laps to run, while Dennis and Müller swapped to let the #27 Andretti chase down the #21 Mahindra in second.[2]
There would be no major revisions to the order out front in the closing stages, with Rowland cruising to a crushing victory over a second clear of de Vries, while Dennis was aided by teammate Müller backing up the rest of the field to claim third in-spite of a five second time penalty.[2] Müller himself would not be fully compensated for his team player efforts, getting mugged for fourth on the line by Mortara, although he would retain fifth from Wehrlein who also picked up fastest lap.[2] Ticktum was next up ahead of Robin Frijns and Stoffel Vandoorne, while Maximilian Günther rounded out the scorers.[2]
Background[]
Three weeks after the FIA Formula E World Championship revisited one of its original host cities for the first time in a decade, the series would head to the much more familiar and fellow 2014/15 host city of Monte Carlo in Monaco.[1] An ever-present on the calendar since 2020, and using an unchanged layout on the full Circuit de Monaco, the only change ahead of the eighth trip to the Monegasque circuit would be to the schedule, which saw the legendary circuit host two E-Prix for the first time in a single season.[1] This therefore meant that Pit Boost would return for its second appearance of the campaign, having successfully debuted at 2025 Jeddah E-Prix I.[4]
Miami Mixer[]
Oliver Rowland would leave the United States still with the lead in the Drivers' Championship, although his advantage had been cut to fifteen points as the Brit endured his worst race of the season in terms of outright pace. António Félix da Costa had moved back up to be the closest challenger in second, while defending Champion Pascal Wehrlein felt as though his title defence was truly underway with his first victory of the season which catipulted him up to third. Taylor Barnard was next up ahead of Maximilian Günther, while first points for Lucas di Grassi, Norman Nato and Robin Frijns meant it was just rookie Zane Maloney and David Beckmann who had yet to claim points in Season Eleven.
In the Teams' Championship the TAG Heuer Porsche Formula E Team had returned to the head of the field after their first victory of the campaign, and the haul of 41 points for their double podium meant they smashed through the 100 point mark and opened a 25 point lead. Nissan had made way for them after their ultimately disappointing haul from Miami, while their customers NEOM McLaren Formula E Team had slipped thirteen further back in third. DS Penske were next up in fourth after a non-score, leaving them twelve ahead of Mahindra Racing in fifth, while Lola Yamaha ABT Formula E Team had claimed their first points of the season to move into ninth.
The Manufacturers' Championship would be left with Nissan at the head of the field as they had arrived in Miami, although their advantage was cut to just 26 points after Porsche slashed the gap with their strong points haul. The Stellantis group had held third ahead of Mahindra, Jaguar had held fifth, while Lola Yamaha had claimed solid points for the first time to move onto 19 for the season, albeit still some 48 away from Jaguar in fifth in their debut campaign.

Qualifying[]
Qualifying for the 2025 Monaco E-Prix I would be conducted according to the knockout format, introduced ahead of season eight.[7] The field would be split into two groups of eleven drivers, based on Championship position, with each group then getting ten minutes on track to complete as many laps as they wished at 300 kW.[7] The fastest eight overall would then proceed to the knockout phase, now running at the maximum 350 kW qualifying mode and with AWD active, with the fastest from group A against the fourth fastest from group A and so on, until four drivers were left.[7]
Those four would move on to the Semi-Final, with the winner of A1/A4 taking on the victor of A2/A3, while the triumphant driver of B3/B2 would take on B4/B1's winner.[7] The winners from those duels would then go into the final, with the winner of that duel taking pole ahead of the runner-up, with any grid penalties applied after the conclusion of the final.[7]

Milestones[]
- Sixth win for Oliver Rowland.
- Nissan Formula E Team earned their fifth victory.
- Nissan secured their eighth victory as a powertrain supplier.
- First podium for Nyck de Vries since the 2022 London E-Prix II.
Standings[]
A third victory in six races meant that Oliver Rowland ended the first day in Monte Carlo with a huge 34 point lead at the head of the Championship hunt, the Brit only six points shy of the 100 point mark with a third of the season completed. Pascal Wehrlein had moved up to be the Brit's closest challenger, while António Félix da Costa in third had slipped 40 points behind in third, level with Taylor Barnard but deemed ahead of the British pilot due having more second places in 2024/25. Nyck de Vries then completed the top five after his first podium in three years, while it had been another pointless day for Zane Maloney and David Beckmann as they remained at the foot of the table as the only non-scorers.
The Porsche Formula E Team continued to head the Teams' Championship after the first battle of Monte Carlo, although their advantage had been reduced to nine points as their Monegasque curse seemingly continued. The Nissan Formula E Team had delivered the most damage as they sought to claim control of the Teams' Championship, while behind Mahindra Racing had moved up to third ahead of McLaren Formula E Team in what was proving to be one of their best seasons. Elsehwere, Andretti Formula E had smashed their way back into the top five, while at the bottom of the field Envision Racing remained at the bottom of the table behind Cupra Kiro and Lola Yamaha ABT Formula E Team.
In the Manufacturers' Championship Nissan had retained control at the head of the field, their lead having inched out to 28 points after their third victory of the season. Porsche remained their closest contenders in second, while behind Mahindra had overtaken Stellantis to secure third after their biggest points haul of the season. Behind Jaguar had held fifth but fallen even further from the rest of the field, while Lola had claimed another point but remained in sixth.
