The ABB Group, otherwise known as ABB, is a Swiss based international technology firm and title sponsor of the FIA Formula E Championship.[1] Specialists in power and automation, ABB began their sponsorship deal with FE during the 2017/18 season, announcing a multi-year deal with the Series.[1]
Background[]
ABB was originally created in 1988 upon the merger of two nineteenth century companies.[2] Those two companies, Allmänna Svenska Elektriska Aktiebolaget {ASEA} of Sweden and Brown, Boveri & Cie (BBC) of Switzerland were among the biggest technology firms in Europe at their peaks, with both holding multiple subsidiary businesses.[2] The new company was named ABB, incorporating both names, and would begin a new line of investments across Europe and later the World.[2]
Formula E History[]
ABB began seeking a relationship with FE once Formula E Holdings began to sell shares and interest in the Series in 2014 to generate income.[1] This ultimately came to a head in late 2017, with a deal struck between FE Holdings and ABB for the latter to become the series sponsor on an initial two season contract.[1] The deal was later ratified by the FIA and duly announced on the 9 January 2018, making Formula E the first FIA sanctioned single-seater series to feature a title sponsor.[1]
The deal meant that the Series would officially be referred to as the ABB FIA Formula E Championship, while any E-Prix without sponsorship would be named the [City Name] ABB FIA Formula E E-Prix from 2018 onward.[1]
Products[]
ABB's interest in FE is limited to title sponsorship of the Series.[1]
