The ABT Schaeffler FE01 was an all-electric single-seater racing car developed by Schaeffler to compete in the 2015/16 FIA Formula E Championship with the ABT Schaeffler Audi Sport team.[1] The first powertrain to be developed to compete in FE by Schaeffler and developed in tandem with their de facto factory team ABT, the FE01 would prove to be a title challenging powertrain in the hands of Lucas di Grassi, securing three victories as he narrowly missed out on the crown.[2]

Competitive History[]

The FE01 made its debut at the 2015/16 season opener at the 2015 Beijing ePrix, where the car would run in the podium hunt with Lucas di Grassi at the wheel, although the Brazilian pilot was unable to match the pace of race winner Sébastien Buemi.[3] In Putrajaya di Grassi would have to fight his way to the front of the field, which would see him perfectly placed to lunge past Nicolas Prost to claim victory when it became clear that the Frenchman was in significant trouble with his energy.[4] A quick stop in Punta del Este would hand di Grassi another second place finish, which would be followed by a third place at the 2016 Buenos Aires ePrix, after a race long tussle with Sam Bird and Buemi for victory.[5]

di Grassi notched up the FE01's second victory at the 2016 Mexico City ePrix in impressive fashion, only to be disqualified post-race after his first car pre-swap had been found to be underweight, although he responded quickly with victory at the 2016 Long Beach ePrix, backed with teammate Daniel Abt in third.[6] A third win came in dominant fashion in Paris, before Abt headed di Grassi to second and third in Berlin, despite attempts to swap the pair around as Buemi swept to victory.[7] Damage for di Grassi meant he was fortunate to end the penultimate race of the season ahead of Buemi in fourth at the 2016 London ePrix I, before a bizarre incident at the start of the 2016 London ePrix II saw di Grassi ram into the back of Buemi and destroy the front of his initial FE01, handing the Swiss pilot the crown.[2]

Development History[]

Schaeffler began developing their first FIA Formula E Championship powertrain ahead of the 2015/16 season, and would focus on making a design as efficient as they could rather than focus on outright performance.[1] Using a single longtiudinal eMotor design with a three speed gearbox produced in tandem with the motor by Hewland, the Schaeffler design would differ from the original Spark-Renault SRT 01E design by placing the inverter between the motor and the gearbox, utilising the extra room created by mouting the gearbox transversely.[8] The car began testing in 2015 and would make its public debut at the 2015 Donington Test, where it proved to be reliable and relatively quick on long-runs, and would benefit from a reinforced rear-suspension layout.[8]
