The ABT Schaeffler FE02 was an all-electric, single-seater, racing car developed by Schaeffler to compete in the 2016/17 FIA Formula E Championship with the ABT Schaeffler Audi Sport team.[2] Based around the updated Spark-Renault SRT_01E Evo design for the third FE season, the FE02 would prove to be a race winning car, and would prove competitive enough that Lucas di Grassi was able to claim his maiden FE Championship drivers' title.[3]

Competitive History[]

Development History[]

For their second Formula E powertrain, and first with technical advice from Audi, Schaeffler would opt to simply continue with the design thoughts of their original ABT Schaeffler FE01 design, seeking further improvements in efficiency and lower weight.[4][5] The MGU was lightened and featured revised internals, intended to improve the torque output, while the casings for the gearbox and MGU were also lightened to improve the centre of gravity for the car.[4] Otherwise the design was identical to the FE01 in terms of both layout and gearing, using a single longtitudinal eMotor and three gears, while the inverter only saw some minor revisions in a bid to improve efficiency as a result of the increase in continued deployment (up to 200 kW for 2016/17).[6]

Testing would result in the FE02 being both reliable and show stronger race-run pace than its predecessor, although it was still viewed as being a step behind the Renault Z.E. 16 after the 2016 Donington Test.[7]
