Adrien Tambay (born 25 February 1991 in Paris, Île-de-France, France) is a French racing driver and ABB FIA Formula E World Championship test driver, who drove for the ABT Cupra Formula E Team at the 2023 Rookie Test.[1] The second and final Champion of the shortlived ETCR series, and son of former F1 racer Patrick Tambay, Tambay would drive for ABT at the rookie test, having previously raced for the German squad as a factory Audi driver in the DTM between 2012 and 2016.[2]
Background[]
After a relatively brief stint in karting from 2001 to 2006, Tambay made his debut in the 2007 Formula BMW Germany Championship, ending the year fourth in the standings.[3] Third place the following season saw him step up to the Formula 3 Euro Series in 2009, although unlike most drivers it was to only be a single season.[3] Indeed, after failing to register a point during a disjointed season, Tambay moved on to the Auto GP Series from 2010 onward.[3]
DTM Days: 2010 - 2016[]
Two years in Auto GP saw Tambay take two wins and a best championship result of fourth.[2] He combined this with a limited 2010 campaign in GP3, finishing 20th, and Formula Renault 3.5 in 2011, before Audi approached the Frenchman to join their junior/factory driver programme in 2012.[2] Tambay would subsequently join Audi's roster in the DTM for the 2012 season, joining the secondary ABT Sportsline squad alongside Rahel Frey for a full campaign.[2]
Tambay's maiden DTM campaign saw him claim a maiden podium finish en-route to tenth in the Championship, before slipping to fourteenth in his sophomore campaign in 2013 having failed to reach the podium again.[2] A maiden pole and second podium would see Tambay hold early hopes of a title challenge in 2014, although those hopes soon dwindled with Tambay again fading to fourteenth at the end of the campaign.[2] The Frenchman then endured a miserable 2015 campaign, only scoring points in two races, prompting a move to the Team Rosberg Audi entry for the 2016 season.[2] Ultimately that move would not see a drastic change in form for Tambay, with the Frenchman's third trip to the podium not enough to lift him higher than eighteenth in the final standings.[2]
Endurance Calling: 2018 - Present[]
Tambay sat out the 2017 season, partially due to a heavy accident he suffered during the DTM's visit to Zandvoort during 2016 which had seen him miss a race (one in which his seat was handed to René Rast), and would drop out of the factory Audi roster too.[2] Regardless, Tambay resumed his racing career in 2018 with a drive in the Blancpain GT Series with Strakka Racing, although the Frenchman would not score a major result in his first campaign in the Endurance Cup.[2] 2019 saw a move to the European Le Mans Series, with Tambay scoring half a point in two appearances, with the Frenchman also competing in the Pro-Am class of the French GT4 Cup.[2]
French GT4 Cup would be Tambay's main source of entertainment in 2020 and 2021, although the Frenchman would make his 24 Hours of Le Mans debut in 2020, albeit one that ended in retirement.[2] 2022 saw Tambay enter the ETCR series driving for the Cupra EKS team, where a strong campaign saw the Frenchman only fail to finish on the podium once en-route to his first major title, defeating teammate, team owner and reigning ETCR Champion Mattias Ekström.[2]
Formula E History[]
Tambay was approached to take part in the 2023 Rookie Test by the ABT Cupra Formula E Team shortly before the final entry for the test was announced, a reunion of sorts for the Frenchman having driven for ABT during his DTM days.[1] The Frenchman hence made his ABB FIA Formula E World Championship debut at the Tempelhofring in said test, finishing seventeenth and two tenths slower than test teammate Tim Tramnitz.[4]
