Alexander Dunne (born 11 November 2005 in Offaly, Leinster, Ireland) is an Irish racing driver who served as the reserve and development driver for the NEOM McLaren Formula E Team during the 2024/25 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship.[1] A veteran of numerous single seater series and a member of the McLaren Driver Development Programme, Dunne made his FE debut in the Rookie Free Practice session at the 2025 Jeddah E-Prix I.[1]
Background[]
Dunne began his career in karting at the ge of eight, racing in Ireland and the United Kingdom securing several national titles, before moving into single-seaters in 2021 with campaigns in the Spanish F4 Championship and ADAC Formula 4 Championship.[2] Finishing eighth in the latter, Dunne would secure a seat in the F4 British Championship, winning the title in his rookie year, while also finishing as runner up in the Italian F4 Championship to a dominant Andrea Kimi Antonelli.[2] 2023 saw Dunne progress in the GB3 Championship, finishing as runner-up, while also making his debut at the Macau Grand Prix although he would retire from the race.[2]
McLaren's Marvel?: 2024 - Present[]
2024 saw Dunne secure a seat in the FIA Formula 3 Championship for the season, as well as a place in the McLaren Driver Development Programme midway through the campaign, although the Irish racer would only secure a lowly fourteenth in the final standings.[2] Regardless, Dunne would do enough to secure a promotion to the FIA Formula 2 Championship for 2025 with McLaren's backing.[2]
Formula E History[]
Dunne, as a member of the McLaren Driver Development Programme, was offered a chance to test for McLaren's Formula E Team, and was duly signed up to be their reserve and development driver for the 2024/25 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, following in the footsteps of fellow McLaren youth Taylor Barnard.[1] Supporting the FE team as a sim driver as well as reserve, Dunne would make his debut in an FE car at the 2025 Jeddah E-Prix I, taking part in the Rookie Free Practice session staged ahead of the race weekend that saw him focus on long-runs and hence set the slowest time of the session.[3]
