Alexander George Lynn (born 17 September 1993 in Goodmayes, Greater London, England) otherwise known as Alex Lynn, is a British racing driver who competes in the 2019/20 ABB Formula E Championship with Mahindra Racing.[1] A former driver for DS Virgin Racing during 2017/18, Lynn had initially started the 2019/20 season as a reserve driver for Jaguar Racing, although he would join Mahindra after Pascal Wehrlein left the team ahead of the reorganised season finale in Berlin.[1]
Lynn originally made his FE debut at the 2017 New York City ePrix I with Virgin Racing as a replacement for José María López, and duly impressed by claiming pole for his first race.[2] That impressed Virgin enough to hire the Brit for the full 2017/18 season, although Lynn would only claim minor points across the season.[3]
Having been left without a drive for 2018/19, Lynn would obtain a drive with Aston Martin in the World Endurance Championship, before replacing Nelson Piquet Jr. at Jaguar for the second half of the season.[4] However, after some impressive performances Lynn would missout on a seat with Jaguar to compatriot James Calado, although he was offered a test/reserve role with the squad.[5][6]
Yet, Lynn would get a third chance to secure a long-term FE future during the 2019/20 season, after securing the second Mahindra Racing seat for the final six rounds of the sixth FE season after Wehrlein left the Indian squad.[1]
Background[]
Lynn began his career in karting, racing in the Rotax Mini Max and JICA classes until moving to the KF2 class in 2008.[7] The following season, Lynn graduated to single seater race cars, beginning his climb up the motorsport ladder via Formula Renault.[7] It took a full season of racing before Lynn tasted success, although the Brit would win both the Winter Cup and and the British Formula Renault series in 2010 and 2011.[7]
An Expanded Experience[]
Winning Formula Renault outright earned Lynn a shot at the 2012 British Formula Three Championship, as well as a number of races in the Euro Series.[7] His first win came midway through the season, while the Brit also made his debut in the prestigious Macau Grand Prix, finishing third.[7] Another season and another promotion in 2013 followed, with Lynn moving into the newly created FIA European F3 Championship.[7]
2013 would be one of Lynn's best seasons, the Brit finishing third in the F3 Championship while also returning to Macau to win the Grand Prix outright.[7] His exploits earned him a spot in the Red Bull Junior Team programme, with the Brit moving to the w:c:motorsport:GP3 Series for 2014.[7] Debut delight followed, with Lynn taking pole, fastest lap and victory in his first race, before going on to win the series at the end of the season.[7]
Lynn's prize for winning GP3 in 2014 would be a test in a GP2 Series car, as well as a test in a Formula One machine.[7] His efforts also landed an offer to become a development driver with the Williams F1 Team, ending his connection with Red Bull.[7] Regardless, Lynn would partner another Red Bull protege in the form of Pierre Gasly during the 2015 season.[7]
Endurance Ambitions[]
Two seasons for Lynn in GP2 saw the Brit claim five wins, although he was unable to mount a challenge for the title.[7] He would leave the series at the end of 2016, opting to take up a full season campaign in the World Endurance Championship for 2017, having got his first taste earlier that year.[7] The Brit would also get a single outing in the United SportsCar Championship in 2017, winning the 12 Hours of Sebring on his debut.[7]
Formula E History[]
Lynn was signed up to be DS Virgin Racing's reserve driver partway through the 2016/17 season, having completed a single test for Jaguar Racing at the 2016 Donington Test.[8] Virgin signed Lynn in the knowledge that José María López would miss the double header in New York, with Lynn duly stepping up to fill the Argentine racer's seat in mid-July.[2] It was an excellent first run for Lynn, the Brit stunning the field to claim pole on his debut, although issues during the race caused him to retire.[9] The Sunday race Lynn fared little better, failing to finish despite another strong quali-performance.
Full Time Fighter[]
Virgin were keen to sign Lynn up for a full season after his debut, and duly did so when Lopez left the team at the end of the 2016/17 season.[3] Lynn would therefore partner Sam Bird during his full rookie season, with both hoping to claim wins during 2017/18.[3] Indeed, Lynn seemed to be determined to repay the faith shown in him by Virgin, claiming two point scoring finishes in the season opening races in Hong Kong.[10]
Another points finish followed in Marrakech, before the Brit retired in Santiago with a complete failure of his electrical system.[11] Mexico City then yielded a tenth place finish for Lynn, ahead of a season best performance of sixth in Punta del Este, with Lynn fighting with Felix Rosenqvist and Mitch Evans throughout.[12] Yet, while he had been a consistent point scorer to that point, the second half of Lynn's maiden FE campaign would not go so well.
Indeed, the Brit would fail to score at all through to the end of the season, with two retirements coming in Rome and New York City.[13] The latter was a more spectacular exit, with the Brit spinning into the barriers through one of the fastest corners in FE, destroying the back end of his car.[13] Regardless, Lynn would finish the season in sixteenth place, with his tally of seventeen points keeping Mahindra away from Virgin in the Teams Championship.[13]
Jaguar Rejuvenation[]
Lynn lost his Virgin seat ahead of the 2018/19 season, with the team adding Robin Frijns to their line-up alongside Bird after a switch to customer Audi powertrains.[14] Lynn hence spent the first part of the season on the sidelines, before being asked to join Jaguar ahead of the 2019 Rome E-Prix after Nelson Piquet Jr. quit the lead.[4] The Brit ultimately failed to claim points on his debut as teammate Mitch Evans claimed victory, having never driven the new-for-2018/19 Jaguar I-Type III before the weekend.[15]
Lynn was taken out of the following race in Paris by Edoardo Mortara while battling outside of the points, before claiming a strong eighth place in Monaco after a race long battle with Stoffel Vandoorne.[16] Lynn duly made his first Super Pole appearance of the season in Berlin, only to drop out of the race late on while running in the top six.[17] The Brit duly claimed a strong seventh place at the 2019 Swiss E-Prix, moving up from ninth on the grid in tricky conditions.[18]
Heading into the season finale Lynn was tasked with supporting teammate Evans' bid for the title, and duly got into Super Pole to claim third on the grid for the New York City E-Prix I.[19] A strong start saw Lynn move into second and harass Sébastien Buemi for the lead, only for an MCU failure mid-race to end his hopes of victory.[19] Lynn subsequently ended the campaign with a quiet run to sixteenth in the season ending 2019 New York City E-Prix II, leaving him on 10 points and 18th in the Championship.[20]
Ahead of the 2019/20 season Lynn would missout on a race seat with Jaguar Racing, who hired James Calado to partner Evans, although Lynn was offered a reserve role.[5][6]
Mahindra Move[]
In June 2019, Lynn was signed by Mahindra Racing to replace Pascal Wehrlein for the remainder of the 2019/20 season[1]
