Arrival Ltd. is a British electric vehicle manufacturer, headquartered in London, UK, which plans to specialise in light weight commercial vehicles.[3] Founded in 2015 by Russian businessman Denis Sverdlov, Arrival would obtain control of Kinetic, the founders of the Roborace programme, in 2020 and would takeover development of the series.[2]

On 19 May 2022 it was revealed that Arrival had ended the Roborace programme before its first full season, citing a lack of profit potential in the programme.[2]

Background[]

Arrival's origins can be found in Kinetic Group, a business formed in 2015 by Denis Sverdlov to focus on building and racing autonomous race cars, which subsequently signed a deal with the FIA and Formula E Holdings to form Roborace, a planned support series for the FIA Formula E Championship.[1][3] News on Roborace and Kinetic would then largely remain anonymous, barring occasional appearances at various FE events, including a demonstration run at the 2017 Paris ePrix.[4] In 2017 Arrival emerged as Sverdlov's primary business over Kinetic, securing commercial contracts to develop electric vehicles in the commercial sector.[3]

Postal Push: 2017 - Present[]

Arrival's first major deal would be with the Royal Mail, when in 2017 the British firm managed to secure a deal to develop nine vehicles for the postal service.[3] The United Parcel Service would sign a 35 vehicle deal in May 2019, while in January 2020 Arrival secured c. €100 million in funding from Korean manufacturers Hyundai and Kia Motors.[3] Later that month UPS would invest in Arrival and sign a deal to produce 10,000 electric vans, set to be delivered in 2024.[3]

2020 would also see Arrival take control of sister group Kinetic, securing both Kinetic and Roborace for just $10,000.[2] Arrival would also begin expanding its operations that year, establishing offices in Charlotte, North Carolina, USA, Germany, Israel, Russia and the Netherlands.[3] The firm also set up two microfactories, one in Banbury, Oxfordshire, UK, and another in Charlotte, USA, in order to begin building its fleet of commercial evs.[3]

Roborace History[]

Kinetic would sign a deal with the FIA and Formula E Holdings to form Roborace in November 2015, a planned support series for the FIA Formula E Championship to focus on promoting and developing autonomous vehicles.[1] Arrival would take control of Roborace when it bought Kinetic for $10,000 in 2020, and would arrange the "Season Beta" programme in preparation for the Series' planned start in 2022.[5] However, on 19 May 2022 it was revealed that Arrival had ended the Roborace series, forming Arrival R in its place, which was to focus on interactive leisure and entertainment software.[2]

Despite ending Roborace, Arrival did highlight that it would use the research data acquired from the Series' development period, as well as retain existing contracts, in its commercial products.[2]

Products[]

Arrival was the owner and promoter of the Roborace series, having taken over control of Roborace in 2020 from sister company Kinetic.[2]
