The Autódromo Internacional Miguel E. Abed is a Mexican racing circuit, located in Amozoc, Puebla, Mexico, that made its ABB FIA Formula E World Championship debut as a host venue with the inaugural Puebla E-Prix.[1] Dominated by an oval that was constructed to host the Mexican version of NASCAR, the Autódromo Miguel E. Abed features several in-field circuit variations, with FE expected to use the established International Short Course for its debut at the Mexican circuit.[2]
Background[]
The Autódromo Miguel E. Abed was originally opened in 1985 as a short road circuit, that would subsequently be sold to the Abed brothers, who were the promoters of the Mexican Grand Prix at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez.[3] The short 1.420 km (0.882 mi) circuit became a popular Formula 3 venue, prompting the Abed brothers to make major changes in 1995, beginning a redevelopment programme that aimed to expand the venue's use via the construction of a short oval.[3] However, a lapse in funding meant that the project was constantly delayed, and would only be completed with the aid of fresh investment after the turn of the millennium.[3]
A Quiet Revival[]
The Autódromo Miguel E. Abed reopened in 2005, with an oval circuit complimented by major renovations to the pit complex and grand stands (the latter bringing the circuit capacity to 42,500) and a variety of new in-field circuit layouts.[3] That investment would attract the World Touring Car Championship to the circuit in June that year, with the premier touring car series returning to the circuit through to 2009, when unrest in the region caused the 2010 event to be cancelled.[3] 2009 would also witness the circuit's only fatal accident, when Carlos Pardo was killed while fighting for the lead in a NASCAR Mexico race.[3]
From 2010 onward the Autódromo Miguel E. Abed would see its FIA rating dropped to FIA Grade 3, with the circuit no longer hosting any international racing series.[3] Instead, the circuit became the permanent home of the 24 Hours of Mexico, as well as a mainstay of the NASCAR Mexico calendar.[3]
Formula E History[]
The Autódromo Miguel E. Abed was chosen to host the inaugural Puebla E-Prix after the event's late addition to the 2020/21 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship calendar due to the Covid-19 Pandemic.[1] The Puebla Circuit hence replaced the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez as the host of FE's Mexican round, with the latter venue and the Mexico City E-Prix removed from the schedule as the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez was being used as a temporary hospital to treat Covid patients.[4]
Circuit History[]
The Autódromo Miguel E. Abed would host its first race on 19 June 2021, with FE using the International Short Course for the inaugural 2021 Puebla E-Prix I.[1][2]
