The BMW iFE.21 is an all-electric, single-seater racing car, used by the Avalanche Andretti Formula E team during the 2021/22 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship.[1] Originally built by BMW for their factory FE programme in 2020/21, which was run by Andretti, the iFE.21 would continue to feature on the FE grid after BMW's withdrawal from the Series, with Andretti having taken over the day-to-day running and software development of the car.[1][2]
Competitive History[]
The iFE.21 would debut at the 2021 Diriyah E-Prix I at the start of the 2020/21 FIA Formula E World Championship, with Maximilian Günther and Jake Dennis piloting a pair of iFE.21s run by the factory backed BMW i Andretti Motorsport team.[3]
Development History[]
The iFE.21 entered development during the early spring of 2020, and would be largely based on the powertrain used by the BMW iFE.20, and continue the previous car's novel use of flax as a cooling shaft, in what had been the first use of a renewable textile fibre on a racing car.[4] The new iFE.21 would get a new powertrain, dubbed the BMW Racing eDrive 03, the third evolution of BMW's eDrive powertrain, which had been lightened and refined to produce more torque, resulting in a proposed efficiency of 98% and energy density over 14 kW/kg.[5] Other changes to the car included more general use of 3D printing to construct components for the rear structure of the car, resulting in reduced overall weight as less material was used, and revised weight distribution points.[5]
