The Buenos Aires ePrix is a former motorsport event, staged at the Puerto Madero Circuit in Buenos Aires, Argentina, as a round of the FIA Formula E Championship. Staged three times in the first three seasons of the FE Championship, the Buenos Aires ePrix was dropped from the 2017/18 season onward as other venues in other territories became available.

City History

Ciudad de Nuestra Señora Santa María del Buen Ayre was the original name for Buenos Aires, when it was founded by the Spanish in 1536. After centuries of turmoil (including blockades and sieges) Buenos Aires developed as a modern city in the nineteenth century, becoming the current capital of Argentina in the following years. In terms of sport, Buenos Aires has hosted 20 Grand Prix (using the nearby Oscar Gálvez circuit) as well as numerous stages of the Dakar Rally, although the most popular sport in the city remains football.

Formula E History

The Buenos Aires ePrix was first proposed as a venue for the new FIA Formula E Championship in December 2013, appearing on the first provisional calendar for the 2014/15 season. The ePrix subsequently made it onto the final calendar for the season, with the circuit, penned by Santiago García Remohí, unveiled in July 2014. The inaugural 2015 Buenos Aires ePrix was scheduled for 10 January 2015, with the Puerto Madero Circuit remaining unchanged from Remohí's original design.

António Félix da Costa took a shock victory in the championship, when he won the 2015 Buenos Aires ePrix amid a race filled with accidents and retirements. Sébastien Buemi (who had qualified on pole) retired after clipping the wall while leading, with Lucas di Grassi joining him on the sidelines after a suspension failure in the same chicane. Da Costa came through ahead of Nicolas Prost and Nelson Piquet, Jr., with Sam Bird setting the fastest lap after a late race penalty dropped him out of contention for the victory.

The second Buenos Aires ePrix was no less dramatic, as Bird claimed pole and victory for DS Virgin Racing. His performance was also notable for the fact that he fended off a late race challenge from Sébastien Buemi, whom had stormed through the field from the very back of the grid to claim second. There would also be heartbreak for 2015 winner da Costa, who retired while running in second just half a lap from the pitstops.
