Caio Jotta Collet (born 3 April 2002 in São Paulo, São Paulo State, Brazil) is a Brazilian racing driver whom competed for the Nissan Formula E Team during the 2023/24 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, having initially been signed as a test/reserve driver for the Japanese team.[1] Collet would get a very late call-up to make his FE debut after Oliver Rowland fell ill on the eve of the 2024 Portland E-Prix I, with the Brazilian youth finishing towards the back of the field in both races.[2]
Background[]
Collet began his career karting across Brazil from the age of seven, winning multiple national titles prior to a relocation to Europe in 2016 to follow the path to Formula One, completing two seasons in the CIK-FIA European Championship and various other series.[3] The winter of 2017 saw Collet make his single seater debut in the Formula 4 UAE Championship, finishing sixth win a single win in a part-campaign, before storming to the 2018 French F4 Championship with seven wins.[3] The Formula Renault Eurocup would be next up for Collet, the Brazilian racer completing two full seasons and a best end-of-season position of second, while also making an appearance in the Toyota Racing Series in 2020.[3]
Changing Focus: 2021 - 2024[]
Collet graduated to the FIA Formula 3 Championship in 2021, with a tame rookie campaign seeing the Brazilian claim ninth in the Championship with two podium finishes.[3] His sophomore campaign in F3 saw Collet collect two victories and improve to ninth, before a futher season in 2023 ended with a single win and Collet dropping back down to ninth once again.[3] As a result, Collet decided to leave the European scene and head to North America, joining the Indy NXT series for 2024, with the Brazilian pilot ultimately ending that campaign in third and with the honour of claiming the Rookie of the Year title.[3]
Formula E History[]
Collet was initially signed by the Nissan Formula E Team to serve as a test/reserve driver for the 2023/24 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship in January 2024, and would duly test for the team at the pre-race rookie session in Misano and later appear in the 2024 Rookie Test alongside Gabriele Minì.[1][4] That was expected to be the last public drive for Collet in 2023/24, before the Brazilian was called up to replace Oliver Rowland in #22 Nissan e-4ORCE 04 on the eve of the 2024 Portland E-Prix I, the British racer having been struck down by illness and declared unfit for the race weekend.[5] A fairly quiet debut saw Collet qualify a respectable thirteenth before falling back to eighteenth in the race, before the second Portland E-Prix saw him battle from last on the grid to finish sixteenth, notably finishing ahead of teammate Sacha Fenestraz[2]
