The Cape Town Street Circuit is a temporary racing circuit constructed around the Cape Town Stadium in Cape Town, Western Cape, South Africa, in order to host the Cape Town E-Prix, a round of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship.[1] Originally planned to host a round during the 2021/22 season, the Cape Town Street Circuit would make its FE debut in 2023 having been previously delayed due to unspecified issues.[2]
Formula E History[]
Plans to host an E-Prix in South Africa began in 2020, when a company called e-Movement formed in Cape Town, South Africa, with the aim of securing a contract with Formula E after FE had completed a feasibility study into racing in the city in 2019.[3] The Cape Town Stadium was quickly touted as the hub around which the circuit was to be based, although an initial circuit map for the inaugural Cape Town E-Prix, which was set to debut during the 2021/22 season, was not unveiled before the planned 2022 Cape Town E-Prix was cancelled.[2] Instead, the first circuit layout for the Cape Town E-Prix, which was postponed until the 2022/23 season, was unveiled on 4 March 2022 with an initial plan to stage its first E-Prix in February 2023, although this would only be confirmed upon the second draft of the official 2022/23 season calendar.[1][4]
Circuit History[]
The Cape Town Street Circuit was officially unveiled on 4 March 2022, centred upon the Cape Town Stadium and the Green Point district of Cape Town, concluding almost 20 years worth of planning from various parties in Cape Town to bring a major FIA level event to the city.[4][5]
