Colton Herta (born 30 March 2000 in Santa Clarita, California, United States) is an American racing driver, who served as a test driver for the Andretti Formula E Team during the 2017/18 ABB FIA Formula E Championship.[1] The son of IndyCar Champion Bryan Herta, Herta would complete one FE test with Andretti before returning to focus on his career in the IndyCar Series.[2]
Background[]
Herta began his career in karting at the age of six, although it was only at the age of ten that he started racing in major American championships.[2] In 2014 Herta made his debut in the USF2000 Championship at the age of thirteen, and would duly finish fifteenth in the Championship after missing the opening round due to being too young.[2] The following season saw Herta move to the UK to compete in the MSA Formula Championship, finishing third with four victories.[2]
Indy Ace: 2016 - 2021[]
Remaining in Europe for the 2016 season, Herta would compete a campign in the Euroformula Open, finishing third, as well as a run to second in Spanish Formula 3.[2] For 2017 Herta returned to the United States to compete in Indy Lights, and would go on to finish as runner-up to Patricio O'Ward in his sophomore season in 2018.[2] That success earned Herta a debut in IndyCar at the end of the 2018 season, before earning a full season seat in IndyCar for 2019.[2]
A stunning rookie season saw Herta become the youngest ever winner of an IndyCar Series race when he won the IndyCar Classic, in what was only his third start.[2] A further victory left Herta in seventh in the Championship, prompting a move to Andretti for the 2020 season.[2] With Andretti backing in the Covid affected campaign Herta would finish the campaign in third, before finishing fifth in the 2021 season after securing a further three victories.[2]
Formula E History[]
Herta was called up to test for the Andretti Formula E squad ahead of the 2018 Rookie Test, the only in-season test staged during the 2017/18 ABB FIA Formula E Championship.[1] Partnering Bruno Spengler during the one day test, the American youth would out-pace his more experienced teammate by over a second, although both drivers would be in the bottom third of the timesheet at the end of the day.[3]
