The DS E-Tense FE21 (stylised as the DS E-TENSE FE21) is an all-electric single-seater racing car, developed by DS Automobiles and run by DS Techeetah in the 2021/22 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship.[1] Originally developed for the 2020/21 season, the E-Tense FE21 originally made its debut at the 2021 Rome E-Prix I, after DS opted to delay its release to focus on further development work.[2]
Competitive History[]
The E-Tense FE21 was originally set to debut at the start of the 2020/21 Formula E World Championship, although after the series introduced its two-year homogation rule, DS opted to delay its introduction to complete further development work.[3] Instead, the E-Tense FE21 would make its debut at the third round of the season in Rome, with Jean-Éric Vergne and António Félix da Costa piloting the pair of factory cars run by the DS Techeetah.[2] The new car would make an impressive debut in the opening battle of Rome, as Vergne not only got into the Shoot Out in qualifying, but would go on to win the DS E-Tense FE21's first E-Prix after a battling display.[4]
Development History[]
The E-Tense FE21's powertrain would be redesigned from its predecessor's design, the DS E-Tense FE20, which had itself received some updates prior to the start of the 2020/21 season after the FIA and Formula E adopted a two-year homogation rule.[3] DS Automobiles opted to completely rework the powertrain for the FE21, introducing new inverter and motor designs as well as a complete software overhaul, with the decision to extend the service life of the FE20 allowing the French manufacturer to take more time in refining the design.[5] The DS engineers would also work alongside Total, who co-developed specific lubricants and cooling fluids that were effectively tuned to work directly with the E-Tense FE21 powertrain.[5]
