The DS E-Tense FE23, also entered as the Maserati Tipo Folgore, is a French all-electric racing car and powertrain developed by DS Automobiles in order to compete in the 2022/23 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship.[1] Used by the factory supported DS Penske team during 2022/23, the E-Tense FE23 is also run by Maserati's factory supported team after the Italian manufacturer. and fellow Stellantis member, opted to re-brand the car to the Maserati Tipo Folgore for their debut FE campaign.[2]

Competitive History[]

The E-Tense FE23 made its competitive debut at the 2023 Mexico City E-Prix at the start of the 2022/23 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, with DS Penske running two examples for Stoffel Vandoorne and Jean-Éric Vergne, while Maserati MSG Racing entered a pair of re-branded cars for Maximilian Günther and Edoardo Mortara.[3] However, despite a promising showing in the earlier 2022 Valencia Test, the E-Tense FE23 appeared off of the ultimate pace, with only Vandoorne managing to claim a point in the opening round, while Mortara managed to crash out in his #7 example.[3] The second race saw Vergne show a little more promise, finishing seventh having run in the lead group early on, although a heavy accident for Günther in qualifying meant he had to miss the race as his car was too heavily damaged.[4]

Development History[]

The DS E-Tense FE23 entered development soon after the Generation 3 ruleset was officially launched midway through the 2021/22 season, although the French manufacturer would have to wait until it received its first Gen 3 chassis before it could complete any serious testing.[5] After the official partnership with Dragon Racing, who would re-brand themselves as Penske as part of the deal, the E-Tense FE23 completed significant running in October and November 2022, with an additional two cars being built for Maserati, who would run two further E-Tense FE23s as a customer team.[2] The car made its public debut at the 2022 Valencia Test, with two cars running in DS' black-gold colours and run by Dragon Racing/Penske, while the two Maserati run cars were re-branded as Maserati Tio Folgores.[6]
