The DS Virgin DSV-01 was an all-electric, single-seater racing car developed by DS Performance to compete in the 2015/16 FIA Formula E Championship with the DS Virgin Racing team.[1] The car, which was based on the Spark-Renault SRT_01E, proved to be quick over one lap and would claim one victory in the hands of Sam Bird, taking the honours at the 2016 Buenos Aires ePrix, which was enough for DS Virgin to claim third in their first season together.[2]

Competitive History[]

The DSV-01 debuted at the 2015 Beijing ePrix at the start of the 2015/16 season, where Sam Bird and Jean-Éric Vergne would battle in the lower-end of the points, with Bird the better of the two in seventh.[3] A more competitive showing in Putrajaya saw Bird fight to second after a late-race scrap with Jérôme d'Ambrosio and Robin Frijns, before Vergne claimed his first points of the campaign with seventh in Punta del Este.[4] Then came the DSV-01's best race of the campaign, with Bird securing the car's maiden pole position at the 2016 Buenos Aires ePrix, before dominanting the ePrix itself, resisting late-race pressure from a charging Sébastien Buemi to claim the DSV-01's only race victory.[5]

The 2016 Mexico City ePrix proved to be less impressive, although Bird would claim solid points, before securing pole position at both the Paris and Long Beach, only to slip to sixth in both races, highlighting the car's impressive one-lap pace.[6] In contrast, Vergne would struggle to match Bird's outright pace, but claimed second at his home race in Paris, before securing his first pole position of the season at the 2016 Berlin ePrix, before he too fell back into fifth come the end of the race.[7] Vergne would score another podium at the penultimate race, the 2016 London ePrix I, Bird finishing seventh, before a technical issue for Bird saw his season end prematurely while running at the front of the field at the season ending 2016 London ePrix II.[2]

Come the end of the season the DSV-01 had claimed enough points for DS Virgin to secure third in the Teams' Championship, while Bird and Vergne would secure fourth and ninth respectively in the Drivers' Championship.[2]

Development History[]

Virgin Racing signed a deal with DS to develop a powertrain for them ahead of the 2015/16 season, with the French manufacturer opting to go in a completely different direction compared to the original Spark-Renault SRT_01E design.[1] Indeed, for their first FE design, DS would opt to develop a dual-motor design with two axial flux eMotors, known colloquially as pancake motors as a result of their shape, which were then bolted either side of the differential, and removed the need for a gearbox due to their lower operating torque.[8] The cost of this design would be the need for two heavy motors and two inverters, which due to packaging limitations were mounted above the battery, which meant that the DSV-01 was heavier than it otherwise would have been and hindered the setup options for the car.[8] The design also incorporated software and controls from Magneti Marelli.[9]

Testing would see the DSV-01 run without trouble and at the 2015 Donington Test the car would demonstrate particularly strong one-lap pace.
