Ella Mai Lloyd (born 20 July 2005 in Pontypridd, Wales, United Kingdom) is a British racing driver who served as a test driver for the NEOM McLaren Formula E Team during the 2024/25 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship.[1] A member of the McLaren Driver Development Programme, Lloyd's FE debut came at the 2024 Jarama Test, where the British youth would run in the women's only session staged as part of that test.[1]
Background[]
Lloyd got her first sample of motorracing at the age of thirteen, when she was offered a place at the FIA's Girl's on Track Karting Challenge in 2018, although she would not opt to race in karts at all.[2] Instead, Lloyd's career would begin at the age of seventeen, when the Welsh born racer secured a seat in the Ginetta Junior Championship for 2022, finishing 21st in the Championship before moving to the Ginetta GT5 Challenge for 2023, where she impressed by winning on her debut.[2] Indeed, a strong rookie campaign in Ginetta GT5 saw Lloyd finish as runner-up in the series, earning her a spot in the F4 British Championship for 2024, having started the season with a partial campaign in the Formula Winter Series.[2]
Lloyd would claim four podium finishes in her maiden F4 campaign, while also getting a wildcard appearance in F1 Academy and a runout in Formula Trophy UAE towards the end of the season.[2] For 2025 Lloyd secured the backing of the McLaren Driver Development Programme and would move into F1 Academy for a full campaign.[2]
Formula E History[]
Lloyd's chance to sample the Gen 3 Evo, the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship base car, came at the 2024 Jarama Test, when Lloyd partnered fellow McLaren Driver Development Driver Bianca Bustamante at the NEOM McLaren Formula E Team for the women's only session.[1] While out-paced in terms of outright performance by her more experienced teammate, Lloyd's run in the session would be praised by former Mercedes-EQ Formula E Team driver Gary Paffett, who was assisting the team during the test.[3]
