The FIA Formula E World Championship is an annual motorsport championship founded by the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile as a means to test, develop and race electric vehicles.[1] The first season of Formula E started in Beijing in 2014, and ran until the end of June 2015 in London, with Nelson Piquet Jr. becoming the inaugural Champion.[1]

Sébastien Buemi, Lucas di Grassi and Jean-Éric Vergne have subsequently gone on to claim the FE Championship, with Vergne becoming the first driver to defend his crown in 2018/19.[2] As of the 2019/20 season, the sixth edition of FE, the series has twelve entrants fielding two cars apiece, with nine manufacturers from across the globe competing for the title using custom powertrains fitted to the series' base chassis, the Spark SRT05e.[3]

From the 2017/18 season onward, FE would officially be known as the ABB FIA Formula E Championship after a multi-year sponsorship deal was signed between Formula E Holdings and Swiss technology firm ABB.[4] On 3 December 2019 it was announced that FE would become an FIA accredited "World Championship", beginning from the 2020/21 season.[5]

Concept[]

The FIA have designated the championship as an open series, meaning manufacturers may bring their own designs to race meetings.[1] With many citing the need for motorsport to find alternative forms of energy use, Formula E is intended to become the top level all-electric car championship, allowing manufacturers to develop their technology to ultimately be used in road cars.[1]

Furthermore, the World Motor Sport Council announced in Mexico City after the end of the inaugural season, a modification to the e-Licence, the required competition licence to compete in the Formula E Championship.[6] Drivers must complete a FIA approved training session about electrical safety and the technical aspects of the Championship.[6] All drivers must also have scored 20 points according to the FIA Licence system, although they may enter if the FIA judges them to have performed exceptionally in single seaters.[6]

A similar concept for motorcycles was launched on the 6 February 2018 as the FIM MotoE World Cup, organised by the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme and Dorna Sports.[7] However, there were no direct connections established between FE and MotoE during the latter's inaugural season in 2019.[7]

Technology[]

For 2014/15, Formula E was limited to a one-make series, with only one car homologated for the year: the Spark-Renault SRT_01E.[8] McLaren Electronic Systems provided the powertrain and electronics, while Williams Advanced Engineering supplied the batteries, capable of producing 200kw (around 270bhp) of energy for half an hour.[8]

Despite the new technology, cost cutting measures and universal parts were used elsewhere. Michelin developed an 18" wheel specifically for the championship, while each car was equipped with a Hewland built, set ratio, sequential gearbox.[8]

Championship Format[]

Formula E will use the FIA's conventional system, two free-practice session scheduled before qualifying.[9] The original Qualifying format saw the drivers split randomly into four groups of five in a ninety minute session to set the fastest time (pole position is to be awarded three points).[9] From 2015/16 until the end of the 2020/21 season the fastest five drivers overall would enter a shootout to claim pole position, before in 2021/22 the series introduced a new knockout style format.[10]

The race, in Formula E named an ePrix or E-Prix, will commence with a standing start about two hours after the end of qualifying, with drivers making a mandatory pitstop to change cars.[9] With power limited to 150kw (202bhp), the drivers will race for sixty minutes, with a temporary boost available to the three most popular drivers through the "FanBoost" system.[9] The fastest lap setter will be awarded two points, with the championship following the FIA's established points system.[9]

From the eleven races, the FIA will award both a Drivers Championship and a Teams Championship to the driver/team with the most points.[9] From the start of the 2015/16 season, Formula E became an partially-open championship, with eight nominated manufacturers allowed to develop their own powertrains for both a factory and a customer team.[11] The restrictions on what could be developed, namely on the powertrain and software, would remain in place throughout the life-span of both the Spark-Renault SRT_01E, and the second generation Spark SRT05e, and would continue into the Generation 3 era.[12]

History[]

The FIA first announced an interest in starting an all-electric Formula class of racing in 2010, beginning a submission process for willing designers and championship proposals to be made, closing on the 14th of October, 2011.[13] Two submitters were Alejandro Agag and Frédéric Vasseur, whom contributed a championship proposal and car design respectively.[13] Agag founded Formula E Holdings along with Enrique Bañuelos in 2012, having been awarded marketing rights to the newly formed FIA Formula E Championship on the 1st of August 2012.[14] Vasseur was then approached to construct the all electric car for the championship, resulting in the Spark-Renault SRT_01E.[13]

Donington Debut[]

The new SRT_01E entered extensive testing in 2013, covering over 4,000km before the first ten race-ready cars were delivered in May 2014.[13] The ten teams, which had come forward since the start of 2014, began testing, evaluating and preparing the cars at Donington Park from the 3rd of July, with four days of extensive testing over two weeks.[15] The cars had already had a shakedown in June at the circuit (which became the centre of Formula E from that point, apart from the London based offices of FEH), and would appear once more at the circuit before the season started in Beijing.[15]

To Beijing and Beyond: 2014/15[]

The 2014/15 FIA Formula E Championship started with a bang at the 2014 Beijing ePrix on the 13th of September, 2014.[16] Lucas di Grassi made history by becoming the first winner of an ePrix in fortunate circumstances, after Nicolas Prost hit the side of Nick Heidfeld in the run into the final corner of the race, sending Heidfeld into a high speed slide.[16] Heidfeld's car was thrown into a barrel roll by a curb, although he would walk away unharmed when his ruined Venturi run machine smacked into the opposite barrier.[16]

Although none of the subsequent races have seen quite the level of late drama as Beijing, the intensity of the racing remained, with Sam Bird, Sébastien Buemi, Prost, and, most surprisingly, António Félix da Costa winning the next four ePrix. The title battle rumbled on to the season ending 2015 London ePrix II, where either di Grassi, Piquet or Buemi could have won the title.[17] Buemi had the advantage on track for most of the race, but ultimately lost out to Piquet on the final corner by just a single point, having been unable to pass Bruno Senna.[17]

Open Status: 2015/16[]

From the start of the 2015/16 Formula E Season, eight manufacturers will join the series, redesigning and constructing their own powertrains for the SRT_01E.[11] The FIA hopes that this will stimulate development of other areas in road cars and in Formula E, although work on other areas of the car in 2015/16 will be heavily restricted.[11] The homologation period for the manufacturer's designs began in February 2015.[11]

After pre-season testing it appeared that Renault e.Dams would be the class of the field, and with five wins from ten races, it was proved to be so. Their driver Sébastien Buemi also went on to take the honours in the Drivers' Championship, although he would have to set fastest lap at a tense season finale to defeat Lucas di Grassi.[18]

Championship Titles[]

There are three Championships on offer in the FIA Formula E World Championship, one for drivers, one for teams, and as of the 2024/25 season a title for manufacturers.[19]

FIA Formula E World Championship for Drivers[]

The FIA Formula E Championship for Drivers has been awarded in every season of the FE Championship, and would be upgraded to a World Championship ahead of the 2020/21 season.[5] The Championship is determined by the number of points scored across the entire campaign, with the driver with the highest total declared as the Champion.[20] Nine different drivers have won the Championship across the first ten seasons of the series, with Nelson Piquet Jr. the inaugural FE Champion after snatching the Championship at the final race of the 2014/15 season.[21]

FIA Formula E World Championship for Teams[]

Alongside the Drivers' Championship, Formula E has also operated a Teams' Championship since the series' inception in 2014/15, which would also become an FIA accredited World Championship title in 2020.[5] The Teams' Championship is awarded to the highest scoring Team across the campaign, based on the total points scored by both of each teams' drivers across the full season.[31] So far six different teams have won the Teams' Championship in the first ten seasons of FE.

FIA Formula E World Championship for Manufacturers[]

The FIA Formula E Championship for Manufacturers is the newest of FE's Championships, having only been created in the form of the FIA Formula Manufacturers' Trophy for the 2023/24 season, after requests for greater representation for each manufacturer in the series.[35] For 2024/25 the Trophy would become a fully accredited FIA World Championship after WMSC approval, with scoring based on the highest two finishing cars from each manufacturer in each race.[19] This was done in order to balance out those manufacturers who had customer teams, and hence more cars on the grid, against those who only had a single team to supply for each event.[19]

Media[]

Formula E Holdings and the FIA use a variety of methods to advertise and show the Championship. TV rights were awarded to several big Entertainment companies across the world for the first seasons of the Championship, with FOX Sports getting a contract until 2020. ITV provide coverage for the Championship in the UK, although Channel 5 and BT Sport also gained highlight packages for the series.[63] The biggest recorded TV audience for the Championship was gained for the Season Finale in London at the end of the 2014/15 season, which had 1.2 million viewers in the UK alone.[63]

Channel 5 became the UK's only Free-to-Air source of FE from the 2016/17 season onward, while Eurosport agreed a separate deal to show the series on their channels across the UK and Europe.[64] The UK's free-to-air FE coverage was subsequently obtained by the BBC ahead of the 2018/19 season, with Quest also obtaining rights to qualifying and the Jaguar I-Pace eTrophy support race.[65]

Away from TV, Formula E Holdings also host a website, fiaformulae.com, the provides the home for the Championship on the internet. They also hold official Facebook, Twitter and YouTube accounts open for the events, with the official site, and YouTube, allowing users to watch every ePrix live via the internet, depending on local broadcasting contracts.
