Felipe Drugovich Roncato (born 23 May 2000 in Maringá, Paraná, Brazil) is a Brazilian racing driver, who served as a test driver for Maserati MSG Racing during the 2022/23 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship.[1] The 2022 FIA Formula 2 Championship Champion, Drugovich would get his FE debut at the 2023 Rookie Test, setting the fastest time, and was heavily linked with a race seat ahead of the 2023/24 season.[2]
Background[]
Drugovich began his career in karting, moving across both South America and Europe before graduating to racing single-seaters in 2016.[3] Signing up to the ADAC Formula 4 Championship, Drugovich would secure a single podium en-route to twelfth in the Championship, finishing as the fourth-best rookie.[3] He duly signed up for a second ADAC campaign in 2017, having started the season with a run to fourth in the MRF Challenge Formula 2000 over the winter.[3]
Open Options: 2017 - 2018[]
Drugovich managed to finish third in ADAC F4 in 2017, while also enjoying rookie wins in the Italian F4 Championship as well as the Euroformula Open Championship.[3] The Brazilian youth duly moved to the Euroformula Open Championship full time in 2018, and would again open his season with a winter campaign in MRF Challenge, claiming the title with ten wins.[3] Indeed, 2018 turned into a standout season for Drugovich, as he claimed the Euroformula Championship as well as the Spanish Formula 3 Championship.[3]
Surprise Stardom: 2019 - Present[]
Having also had a run out in the Pro Mazda Championship at the end of 2018, Drugovich moved into the FIA Formula 3 Championship for 2019.[3] A quiet season saw the Brazilian only score a handful of points to leave him in sixteenth in the Championship, running as Carlin's third driver, although that did not stop Drugovich from securing a seat in the FIA Formula 2 Championship for 2020 with MP Motorsport.[3] An impressive debut season saw Drugovich claim three victories and ninth in the Championship in the Covid-19 disrupted campaign, earning him a seat in the title challenging Virtuosi Racing team for 2021.[3]
Unfortunately for Drugovich he would find little success with Virtuosi, with the Brazilian racer struggling with the experimental race weekend format and reduced running time in the series.[3] A return to MP Motorsport beckoned in 2022, and Drugovich quickly proved to be the star of the field, sweeping to a dominant Championship victory with five wins and 101 points clear of closest challenger Théo Pourchaire, resulting in Aston Martin signing him to their junior driver programme for their Formula One team.[3]
Formula E History[]
Drugovich was first touted as a potential ABB FIA Formula E World Championship pilot after his FIA F2 success, although the Brazilian racer would not receive an offer of a race seat for the 2022/23 season.[3] However, after a change to the rules for 2022/23, which saw the addition of a Rookie Test to the 2022/23 calendar, Drugovich was approached and duly signed to drive for Maserati MSG Racing for the test day, which was held in Berlin, Germany, on 24 April 2023.[1] There Drugovich impressed as he set the fastest time of the test, an effort that was also just two tenths slower than the fastest lap of the 2023 Berlin E-Prix II (set by Maximilian Günther in the exact same car), and would hence earn the Brazilian another run-out for Maserati in the rookie test session at the 2023 Rome E-Prix I.[2][4]
