The Swiss E-Prix was an ABB FIA Formula E Championship event, staged as part of the 2018/19 season in the city of Bern, Switzerland.[1][2] The first "national" E-Prix to be staged, the Swiss E-Prix would also be the debut of Bern as a FE host city, using the Bern Street Circuit, and hence hold the alternate title of the Bern E-Prix.[1]

City History[]

Bern is one of the younger major cities in Europe, with no sign of significant occupation until the late twelfth century.[2] In 1353 the city, then a free imperial city, became one of the eight founding cantons that formed the Swiss Confederacy, before conquering various minor territories to become the largest city-state in the Alps.[2] Bern itself would also continue to grow in population, in-spite of a major fire in 1405, and several waves of pestilence that swept across continental Europe.[2]

A Neutral Nature[]

From the Napoleonic wars onward Bern would become the de facto capital of Switzerland, a status it acquired in 1848.[2] The city would also be the host of major socialist meetings during the late-nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, with a large number of socialists moving to the city during the First World War.[2] The city would continue to have a large socialist, and later foreign population, although was subsequently supplanted by Zürich and other Swiss cities in terms of overall size.[2]

Formula E History[]

Bern was first chosen to host an ABB FIA Formula E Championship race ahead of the 2018/19 season, after Zürich announced that it was unable to host an E-Prix for a second season.[1] The Bern Street Circuit was subsequently designed in the old city, racing around the bear park on the northern/eastern banks of the river Aade.[3] The name of the event was formally announced as the Swiss E-Prix after the Bern circuit was revealed, with Swiss financiers Julius Bär named as title sponsors for the 2019 Swiss E-Prix.[1]

Circuit History[]

The Bern Street Circuit hosted the inaugural Swiss E-Prix on 22 June 2019, albeit with some controversy after a first lap accident at the final chicane caused chaos.[4]
