Franck Montagny, born 5 January 1978, is a former racing driver, whom competed for Andretti Autosport during the 2014/15 FIA Formula E Championship.[1] After scoring a maiden podium finish in the inaugural Beijing ePrix, it was revealed in late December 2014 that Montagny had tested positive for cocaine, which saw him retroactively disqualified from the result of the 2014 Putrajaya ePrix on the 28 of March 2015, following an FIA investigation.[2][3]

Montagny was banned for two years from any competitive form of motorsport, having tested positive for Benzoylecgonine, a metabolite produced when one consumes cocaine, a banned substance when it comes to motorsport.[3]

Background[]

Montagny began his career in karting, taking the French national championship at the age of 14.[1] 1994 saw Montagny take fourth in the French Formula Renault championship in his debut season, although an accident prevented him from competing in any race until 1997.[1] Two years in Formula Three saw Montagny claim second in the championship, before he took two World Series by Nissan titles in three years between 2001 and 2003.[1]

2004 and 2005 saw Montagny named as a test driver for Renault F1, before getting the chance to drive in the championship with Super Aguri at four races in 2006.[1] Montagny left the team at the end of the year, becoming a test driver for Toyota.[1] After Toyota's withdrawal from the sport, Montagny raced at Le Mans in 2011 (taking third for Peugeot) and impressed for OAK Racing in the American Le Mans Series in 2013.[1]

Formula E History[]

Montagny's Formula E career started brightly for Andretti Autosport, as he took second in the 2014 Beijing ePrix in the series debut.[4] A less successful fifteenth place followed at the Putrajaya ePrix, before he missed the 2014 Punta del Este ePrix in Uruguay through illness.[2]

Over the month between Punta del Este and Buenos Aires, it was revealed that Montagny had failed a post-race drugs test after the Putrajaya race.[2] An immediate suspension was issued to the Frenchman after traces of cocaine were found in his sample, with Andretti dropping their big name driver immediately.[2] On 27 March 2015, it was announced that Montagny was guilty of taking Benzoylecgonine before the Putrajaya ePrix, meaning he was excluded from the result, as well as being banned from competing for two years.[3]
