Grégoire Matthieu Saucy (born 26 December 1999 in Bassecourt, Jura, Switzerland) is a Swiss racing driver who worked as test driver for the NEOM McLaren Formula E Team during the 2023/24 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship.[1] A de facto McLaren factory driver in the World Endurance Championship with United Autosports, Saucy would make his FE test debut at the 2024 Rookie Test, setting the sixteenth best time.[2]

Background[]

After spending his youth karting, Saucy would graduate to single-seaters in 2016, when he claimed a seat in the V de V Challenge Monoplace, finishing fourth in the series and securing a place in the Italian F4 Championship and Formula Renault Eurocup for 2017.[3] Making a handul of appearances in both as a guest driver due to funding issues, for 2018 Saucy secured enough backing to complete a full run in Italian F4 and would finish eleveth with two pole positions while also securing a debut in the ADAC Formula 4 Championship.[3] 2019 saw ADAC become Saucy's main programme for the season, where he claimed ninth alongside several more appearanced in Eurocup and Italian F4.[3]

Pushing and Pivots: 2020 - Present[]

Saucy would start 2020 with a run in the Toyota Racing Series, finishing sixth, prior to a run to seventh in the Eurocup as his main entertainment in the COVID-19 disrupted season.[3] In 2021 Saucy would enjoy his best campaign, with a move to the Formula Regional European Championship bringing Saucy his first junior level Championship title with eight wins.[3] The FIA Formula 3 Championship would be the next port of call for Saucy in 2022, with his rookie season securing a single podium and fifteenth in the series.[3]

Unfortunately for Saucy his sophomore season in F3 would not be as much as an improvement as he hoped, as despite claiming one pole and doubling his podium tally, the Swiss ace would only improve to fourteenth in the final standings.[3] As a result Saucy would opt to move into the realm of sportscar racing for 2024, signing a deal to race in the LMGT3 class of the World Endurance Championship with United Autosports and their pair of McLarens, claiming ninth, and a run in the Pro-Am division of the LMP2 class of the European Le Mans Series which earned his fourth with two class wins.[3] A rinse-and-repeat campaign would follow for Saucy in 2025.[3]

Formula E History[]

Saucy would get his first chance to sample the ABB FIA Formula E Championship during the 2023/24 season, when the Swiss racer was offered a seat at the 2024 Rookie Test via his connections with United Autosports who ran the de facto factory effort for McLaren in the World Endurance Championship.[1] Handed the #5 Nissan e-4ORCE 04 for the day, Saucy would end up the quicker of the two McLaren pilots during the session, besting Ugo Ugochukwu by two tenths of a second as the pair set the sixteenth and seventeenth fastest times of the day.[2]
